To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

It will work just the same as the other 8 bank holidays.

Oh how naive you are.

It is a wappy idea from the small mind of the average football supporter.

Wtafdidido · 03/07/2026 14:54

its bloody football. Kicking a stupid ball round a field. Of course it shouldn’t be a bank holiday. Catch a grip. Many thousands of us give no shits about football and have watched none and have no interest in doing so. Take a days annual leave of you feel the excitement will be too much for you.

Washingupdone · 03/07/2026 15:01

My DCs are half French and when we lived in Beijing in 1998 France played in the World Cup final ( and won). They went to bed early and I woke them up at 2 am painted their faces before going to watch the game on a big screen being played in Europe. It is no different for the English children doing the same.

Wow. So my brother who is a cardiac consultant is small minded for watching the football.
Open those eyes, get off your high horse and attempt to be half decent.

Come on Mexico.

Absolutely’Come on Mexico’
The bunch of overpaid divas that are the England team haven’t even played well to get to where they are yet people call for a bank holiday! You can’t make this shit up! 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️😆😆 🇲🇽

lovecotswoldsliving · 03/07/2026 15:07

I will watch the football and I will go to work as normal. People on here moaning about the football can’t cope that some of us may actually be able to have fun. And still work hard.
if kids are off school, so be it.
its not going to harm you in any way, so stop bleating on and on. You are incredibly boring.

Most of the other teams are made up with players in the premier league. You do realise that don’t you?
it’s their opportunity to do extremely well in life.
Just as our top players are highly sought after.
Is there actually something wrong with you, or are you just nasty?

We're not whinging, we're just pointing out it's not in the interests of the majority, and damaging to already struggling employers

I wouldn't bother explaining.
That's boring sort of talk that only grown ups understand.

Oh, you wounded me there! Maybe one day I can be as grown up as you.

I wonder how Scotland gets away with having 9 then?

plomh · 03/07/2026 16:13

Tomikka · 03/07/2026 14:47

Exactly

So that means that in accordance with individual employment contracts:

  1. Bank Holidays are all included within the annual leave total, so as long as the statutory minimum number of leave days is covered the employer pays no extra and the employees don’t get any extra day

  2. Bank Holidays are not included in the contract annual leave (leave plus bank holidays) so the employer has to still pay the people and they get an extra day off. They either get the day off on that day or on another day of their choice in lieu

If a business shuts down for the day then a non football fan employee may be forced to use their extra or non extra day when they don’t want to

If a business does not shut down for the day then football fan employees may be among those working with an extra or non extra day to be taken in lieu at a later date

People say Germany has about 4-5 more BHs than us. However not one of the calendars patterns allow them. As if they are fixed dates, if fall on a weekend, they lose it. We don’t with fixed days as 26/12 falls on Saturday making the 28/12 a BH.

The others are not fixed

Whammyammy · 03/07/2026 16:18

Keir Stsrmer do something nice for us 🤣🤣🤣 nearly fell off my chair. Should haveva bank holiday on his last day as pm

Tryagain26 · 03/07/2026 16:22

You are being very unreasonable.
Not everyone is interested in football. Many people aren't.
Every bank holiday costs businessess.

Boomer55 · 03/07/2026 16:23

If it was the final, maybe. But not for this.

As are people who think football is important.
It's really not

And the football will bring in BILLIONS for the hospitality industry.
Money they need after this government has tried to finish them off.

Wakemeuuuup · 02/07/2026 14:04

England didn't get an extra bank holiday in the year than the women won the euros for the 2nd time in a row and there women won the rugby world cup.

Why the hell would there be a bank holiday because the men reach a round of 16 and the match is at an awkward time

Yes totally agree. It’s a stupid idea anyway, but it also has the problem of reeking of sexism into the bargain.

Allonthesametrain · 03/07/2026 17:10

If it was the semi final possibly, but even then it's a bit unfair, as usual, for those in jobs whose shifts are on the day. Most will want to watch it but expect services like the Police, medical staff, fire brigade, even retail and deliveries to function?

Tryagain26 · 03/07/2026 17:18

OonaStubbs · 01/07/2026 23:32

It's not just a football match. It's a cultural event, a milestone that will be remembered for many years. England's last match in the stadium was the famous "Hand of God" match with Maradona.

It Is just a game. And I can guarantee most people won't remember it for many years.
The Olympics is much more a cultural event and there isn't a Bank holiday so people can watch that.
The hysteria about football and when England win a match is ridiculous

Sad to say, I fear it will be very different! It’s only the round of 16, England are a bit rubbish and they will lose 😞. So not even worth staying up for! But yes I agree, if it I were to let my kids stay up, they could work round it somehow and just be tired.

I don't. I don't understand what that sentence actually means.
