To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Mexico's game yesterday was delayed by 1 hour due to storms.

If that happens again it won't kick off until 2am, then with extra time and penalties it could last until almost 5am. Then people will be so excited they won't be able to sleep.

It is ridiculous to expect people to work under those circumstances. So a bank holiday is pretty much a necessity.

Oh my gosh, get a grip!

MN, home of the professionally miserable.

Or maybe infested with people who think money grows on trees..

user293948849167 · 03/07/2026 09:22

I would support a BH if England get in the final but think it’s unnecessary to have one for this game

ovals · 03/07/2026 09:28

Infested by people who enjoy being miserable. Non-stop whinging about anything that doesn’t benefit them directly.

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 03/07/2026 09:29

No, not everyone gets hysterical about a football match. Those that do can just book a day's leave.

It's ridiculous to expect them not to work. Any football fans can ask for a day off if they are that desperate..

Of the 30 people in my office, we have four football fans. The others couldn't care less. Why should we all lose a day's pay because you want to watch a few blokes kick a ball around some grass.

Get a grip ! For most people it's a minor news story.

We're not whinging, we're just pointing out it's not in the interests of the majority, and damaging to already struggling employers.

ovals · 03/07/2026 09:40

Many people are whinging.

Christ. Why do people lose their mind about football.

Indeed!

Slidingthrulife · 03/07/2026 09:46

why?!?! I work for the NHS and can you even imagine the disruption. Ridiculous suggestion

Monty36 · 03/07/2026 10:23

Not for a World Cup football match. That is not even the final.
We need to keep working as much and as normally as possible. This World Cup organised by Trump and FIFA is hardly going to end with England winning it.
Other countries would love the UK to down tools for a day. No to that.

Can you point to someone getting hysterical. I would say the fun sponge anti footballers are far more vocal than the ones who enjoy football…

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 03/07/2026 10:34

My colleague who stayed up to watch her home country's match last night has made it in to work today on time.

NorthCoast500 · 03/07/2026 10:41

Susannah Reid’s head might actually explode

Well, as hysteria is extreme emotion, I see it evidenced many times on TV when they show England either winning or losing a match, but I don't think it warrants a Bank Holiday.

Dappy777 · 03/07/2026 10:49

Most people I know couldn't care less. You're more likely to see a Palestinian flag around here than a St George. We cling on to the delusion that England is still a nation with a shared identity, shared culture and shared history. But it isn't. It's an "island of strangers," as two-tier Keir put it.

I used to watch England as a kid (in the late 80s), but back then this still felt like a country. I knew who I was. I had a sense of tribal identity and tribal belonging. When I first got into literature, for example, I began by reading 'my' writers. I read Dickens and George Eliot and Virginia Woolf and so on. Today, Radio 4 can't even mention Jane Austen or Tennyson without linking them to slavery and colonialism in some way.

The Left have got what they wanted. They've taught us to be ashamed of our own history and identity, and they've used mass immigration and multiculturalism to impose a new identity on us. Fine. But their new identity means nothing to me. I just don't feel anything anymore. I will take the day off, but I won't be watching the football.

Pistacheeo · 03/07/2026 09:14

No. And I love international football. (Too poor for sky).

Not sure about the pubs being open until 5am either. It screams drink driving and falling asleep at the wheel to me. Poor emergency services and pub staff.

And sickies, kids not attending school etc. Hopefully some employers will class Monday as unauthorised absence- ie don’t get paid. Still get paid sickness if certificate covers that day

Middleagedspreadisreal · 03/07/2026 11:18

I love football, but no, it's not the final

pouletvous · 03/07/2026 11:18

eff off OP

that would be chaotic

outdooryone · 03/07/2026 11:26

It is a fekkn football match. Get over yourself. Watch it on reply.
The rest of us do not care.
The suggestion is also ridiculous - it sets a precedent for any future matches, it would cause chaos with it being last minute, and the cost to business and public purse just huge.

plomh · 03/07/2026 11:33

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 03/07/2026 10:34

My colleague who stayed up to watch her home country's match last night has made it in to work today on time.

I do hope that management will take notice and say “X’s team played late on Friday and they still turned up for work” towards the staff who pull sickies on Monday

OonaStubbs · 03/07/2026 13:40

Deboragh · 03/07/2026 09:16

Bloody ridiculous suggestion. Can you explain who exactly is going to pay the wages of these people for being off and watching a game? If I decide not to go work does my boss then have to pay me as well as paying someone else to do the job I was supposed to be doing? You haven't got a clue how the world works have you?

It will work just the same as the other 8 bank holidays.

OP posts:
LilyBunch25 · 03/07/2026 13:45

Tbh I'm about as impressed with this as I was to read that parliamentary time was used to pass the "emergency legislation" for pubs to stay open until stupid o'clock on Monday. No one can tell me this is a good idea when a lot will start drinking way earlier. No thought for the extra strain on the police trying to monitor drink driving Monday morning when some smart alec thinks they're "ok to drive" and god forbid someone gets killed because of it.

Tomikka · 03/07/2026 14:47

OonaStubbs · 03/07/2026 13:40

It will work just the same as the other 8 bank holidays.

Exactly

So that means that in accordance with individual employment contracts:

  1. Bank Holidays are all included within the annual leave total, so as long as the statutory minimum number of leave days is covered the employer pays no extra and the employees don’t get any extra day

  2. Bank Holidays are not included in the contract annual leave (leave plus bank holidays) so the employer has to still pay the people and they get an extra day off. They either get the day off on that day or on another day of their choice in lieu

If a business shuts down for the day then a non football fan employee may be forced to use their extra or non extra day when they don’t want to

If a business does not shut down for the day then football fan employees may be among those working with an extra or non extra day to be taken in lieu at a later date

ReflectingPool · 03/07/2026 14:53

We're not whinging, we're just pointing out it's not in the interests of the majority, and damaging to already struggling employers

I wouldn't bother explaining.
That's boring sort of talk that only grown ups understand.
