To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

So I take it you are a huge fan of English mens football?
By the way, we did get through to the final in the last Euros. And didn’t we get through to the previous Euros men’s final?

Usually through a lucky break or late goal though.
I'm a huge Man Utd fan and travel to watch them all over the country, it's the England team I dislike.

I'm in Scotland. I don't know anyone who actually got the bank holiday! It wasn't needed anyway as game was early sunday morning not monday morning.

Apparently Aberdeen Council gave its employees the day off and shut local schools. That’s according to people we know there….

Lonelycrab · 02/07/2026 22:01

Let’s face it
A bank holiday would be a massive let down if England lose, which given the circumstances looks entirely possible

Bank holiday to celebrate a possible defeat at last 16 stage…?

not a good idea

Cojones · 02/07/2026 22:42

As others have said YABVU. I would welcome a bank holiday in October, to keep us going in the long BH drought between end of August and Christmas. Don’t for a minute think we’re going to get one. But definitely not for something as frivolous as football (or any sport if I’m honest).

Or they could watch it when they get home.

They won’t last a day of school without hearing the result!

It’s my Mum’s funeral on Monday- we’ve already waited a month since she died- I really don’t want to have to postpone it for bloody football!

I’m very sorry for your loss 🌷

Hell no. My DH & I shouldn't have to miss out on a day's pay each (self-employed), just because you cannot handle an all-nighter. Your lifestyle choice should not cost my family income. Stop being so entitled and selfish.

Football's shite, hope Mexico win.

changeme4this · 03/07/2026 06:07

Well if you are willing to fund everyone a day off, why not then….

How nasty.
Hope you are nicer to your customers who are your bread and butter.
Try and find some kindness.

We get half term in October….

Mexico's game yesterday was delayed by 1 hour due to storms.

If that happens again it won't kick off until 2am, then with extra time and penalties it could last until almost 5am. Then people will be so excited they won't be able to sleep.

It is ridiculous to expect people to work under those circumstances. So a bank holiday is pretty much a necessity.

Take a days annual leave then.

a bank holiday is expensive and even more so at the last minute.

and the reality is not everyone would get it anyway. Not all employers will give an extra bank holiday.

Flyingintotheunknown · 03/07/2026 06:45

It would be a bit silly to call for a bank holiday for England getting through to the final 16. I mean where do we draw the line. It’s the final 16, not the final. You might have more people agreeing with you if England had won the final but you can’t be having bank holidays after every single game England play, they could very easily lose this game on Monday morning, then what? A pointless bank holiday to follow so that some drunks can have the day off work to cure their hangover? A lot of people don’t watch football so where does that leave them?

Purplerain1985 · 03/07/2026 07:28

I’m a carer so I work all bank holidays.Even if I was obsessed with football which I’m not,I don’t think we should.Either book it off or watch on catchup.I’ll watch it after work 😁

LaDamaDeElche · 03/07/2026 07:51

I think a bank holiday should be reserved for if England got into the final. Can’t be giving random holidays for a match that isn’t even the Quarter finals!!

plomh · 03/07/2026 07:57

It’s too late to arrange this.

Im not watching the match. Though dreading Monday small hours. At the the back of my flat, there is a builder’s yard then the back of a pub. The pub only gets loud from a couple of parties they have and England matches. It wasn’t loud during the group games. When England scored the winner. It was very loud.

When England lost in the Euro finals the shouting was going on about 4 hours after the game ended.

HettySunshine · 03/07/2026 08:16

What about property transactions which are legally bound to complete on Monday? Solicitors and estate agents need to be open. Removal companies need to honour bookings. A short notice bank holiday would be disastrous.

Also, it’s a football match 🙄

You know it's never going to happen, you're overthinking 😀

We get half term in October….

@lovecotswoldsliving Half term is a school holiday. It’s not a bank holiday.

England’s bank holidays are:
Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day in December / January
Good Friday, Easter Monday in March or April depending on the moon phases
Two Bank Holiday in May
August Bank holiday in well August

Scotland has nine and Northern Ireland has ten.

But nothing between September and the end of December.

lovecotswoldsliving · 03/07/2026 08:50

Yes but it’s winter and kids don’t need another day off in the same month as Half term.

Squirrel60 · 03/07/2026 08:54

England and Wales have 8 of them, Scotland 9 and Northern Ireland 10.

There are far too many of the awful things without having ANOTHER one just for a load of stupid, boring football that not everyone is obsessed with.

I'd rather carry on working than be forced to take another day off.

ovals · 03/07/2026 09:05

They suck the life out of anyone that is positive or vaguely happy. I wish they would go and be miserable elsewhere.

Pistacheeo · 03/07/2026 09:14

No. And I love international football. (Too poor for sky).

Not sure about the pubs being open until 5am either. It screams drink driving and falling asleep at the wheel to me. Poor emergency services and pub staff.

Bloody ridiculous suggestion. Can you explain who exactly is going to pay the wages of these people for being off and watching a game? If I decide not to go work does my boss then have to pay me as well as paying someone else to do the job I was supposed to be doing? You haven't got a clue how the world works have you?
