To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

There are an awful lot of people who have to work bank holidays so no that would hardly be fair. The country can’t come to a stand still because of one sporting event, even if they get to the finals.
My husband is on a night shift that night and would love to watch the football but he can’t because they have to work bank holidays. He’s hoping he on with a particular manager so they can still watch bits of the match between jobs. Just book it off if it’s that important to you.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 02/07/2026 19:28

Aside from it being a stupid idea that a Bank Holiday is needed on Monday because kick off is it 1am, where the hell does it go from there if England progress? An extra Bank Holiday might, just might, be warranted if they won again after 60 years, but if you're that bothered just book a day's holiday to help you deal with your excitement.

Mexico's game yesterday was delayed by 1 hour due to storms.

If that happens again it won't kick off until 2am, then with extra time and penalties it could last until almost 5am. Then people will be so excited they won't be able to sleep.

It is ridiculous to expect people to work under those circumstances. So a bank holiday is pretty much a necessity.

"it would be ridiculous to expect people to work under those circumstances" 🤣🤣🤣 this has to be a complete p*ss take surely. 😅

The ones who didn’t were too young, too old, not English, too ill or working!!

Haha omg this is ridiculous. You've just named everyone other than middle-aged people who like watching sport in pubs 😂

Why can't you just accept that the majority don't give a shit?

snowmichael · 02/07/2026 19:54

> it seems only fair

So penalise all the self employed, or on zero hours contracts, or shift workers to benefit the 15% minority of people who will watch the match?

Grow up - either stay awake and take a day's leave, or watch it on some streaming service at more reasonable hours the next day

ColdWaterDipper · 02/07/2026 19:57

I remember a few years ago when most schools allowed children to go in late on a Monday morning because England were playing in a final of something (World Cup / euros?) which was lovely, but we don’t need a whole day off. Plus it’s not even a final, it’s just quarter finals so definitely no need for a day off. I’ve said to my football mad boys they can get up at 6am and watch the match before school (obviously also before looking at anything to see the score).

PomplaMouse · 02/07/2026 20:01

Its the round of 16, not a big deal.

Craftycariad · 02/07/2026 20:02

Brightbluesomething · 01/07/2026 20:23

That’s not going to happen. Just book Monday morning off like the rest of us if you’re watching the match.
There’d only be a bank holiday if we win the whole thing. Given our performances I’m always hopeful but it’s not likely.

Why should there be a bank holiday if England win the world cup , do we get bank holidays for winning other sports . It's a sport. If you want to watch it book a holiday

TheZanyScroller · 02/07/2026 20:05

No way. The world keeps turning even when football is on. I'm sick of the world cup. I'm sick of football. If fans choose to go out and get wasted and stay up all night then get an unpaid day off sick. Perhaps losing a day's pay might wake them up a bit. It's not a bank holiday. The rest of us will have to pick up the slack at work so why should fans get paid for the priviedge over football.

I think a Bank Holiday is always a good idea. Boost for the hospitality industry as well.

Who have to work so don't get to enjoy a bank holiday

Greenshed · 02/07/2026 20:13

YABU. It’s a ridiculous idea.

AgnesMcDoo · 02/07/2026 20:16

lovecotswoldsliving · 02/07/2026 17:16

Because they can’t afford it

Yep it was a meaningless political gimmick

Washingupdone · 02/07/2026 20:17

Put your DC early bed on the condition that if they sleep you will wake them at 5.30 am to watch the recorded match on tv before school. As you have recorded it you don’t have to watch the adverts so will be a shorter time.

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · 02/07/2026 20:30

I wouldn’t mind a day off at all so if it happened I wouldn’t be complaining but I don’t really see why it should be a bank holiday. It’s just a sports game?

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · 02/07/2026 20:37

OonaStubbs · 02/07/2026 08:25

We have 2 bank holidays for Christmas and 2 for Easter and a lot more people support England at football than regularly go to church.

Well that’s just a ridiculous comparison isn’t it? Although rooted in Christian origins Christmas and Easter are no longer mainly religious festivals. They form a part of our culture, and are something almost everyone participates in, in some way or another. A football match is just that - a football match. It’s irrelevant.

Idontcareboutthestateofmyhair · 02/07/2026 20:38

I'm in Scotland. I don't know anyone who actually got the bank holiday! It wasn't needed anyway as game was early sunday morning not monday morning.

lovecotswoldsliving · 02/07/2026 20:39

Craftycariad · 02/07/2026 20:08

That was a few. You are one of them.
Why are you posting on a thread about football, if you couldn’t care.
You seem to care enough to keep commenting….

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 02/07/2026 20:46

Are you prepared to pay our employees OP for the day they won’t work and we won’t make any money?

Z0rr0 · 02/07/2026 21:06

It costs businesses a fortune to fund a paid holiday. Given all the recent changes which have massively impacted SMEs and the hospitality industry in particular, it would be massively unreasonable to expect them to fund another huge loss to their income.

exiledfromcornwall · 02/07/2026 21:28

MaryBeardsShoes · 01/07/2026 21:02

Christ. Why do people lose their mind about football.

Not another bank holiday! I personally find bank holidays intensely annoying (and I say that as a retired person, who was of the same opinion when I was working),

Mygardenshedisfallingdown · 02/07/2026 21:53

Bank holiday? Fuck off with that idea.
As much as I love my country. The mens England football team have been shite for years, big egos and over paid.
They will probably win on a technacality or lucky goal, Kane is a complete wanker and the rest of them are useless without him.
They aren't 'heroes' and I for one want them out of the competition.
The lionesses are so much better. They win through talent.

So I take it you are a huge fan of English mens football?
By the way, we did get through to the final in the last Euros. And didn’t we get through to the previous Euros men’s final?

ToffeeCrabApple · 02/07/2026 21:58

Just record it then get up at 6 & watch before work. You can skip the hydration breaks and half time too.
