To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

YABVU and a snowflake at that! Watch it and plough on through. Take a half day if you need to, but really???

I think for a lot of football fans it's not just the lack of sleep that's going to render them unable to get up for work. It's the hangover they plan to have.

MrsPositivity1 · 02/07/2026 18:21

It’s clear you aren’t an employer

Mexico's game yesterday was delayed by 1 hour due to storms.

If that happens again it won't kick off until 2am, then with extra time and penalties it could last until almost 5am. Then people will be so excited they won't be able to sleep.

It is ridiculous to expect people to work under those circumstances. So a bank holiday is pretty much a necessity.

People will be so excited they can’t sleep? And ridiculous to expect work? Take a days AL if it’s important to you. For me, I assume it will be way more work - hospitals will be full of drunken idiots, police will be trying to contain hooligans and domestic violence will increase. Yay.

WimbyAce · 02/07/2026 18:24

I used to watch tennis through the night and still go to work the next day so no it isn't necessary. It's just one of those things, if you decide to watch it then you need to manage your fatigue the next day.

Samysungy · 02/07/2026 18:24

Just go to bed early. Get home from work....tea...bed by 7pm and then get up for the match and maybe a few more hours after.

Basic problem solving.

My daughters are going to want to watch it, but they have school and DH and I have work!

I don’t think a bank holiday is unreasonable!

Think of all of the young girls who play football missing out on this match!

If it has extra time and penalties they would need to get up at 4:30am to watch it on catch up before going to school!

Or they could watch it when they get home.

Mrsgreen100 · 02/07/2026 18:26

What a completely ridiculous idea not everybody wants to waste their life watching football, the impact of a bank holiday financially to the country and individuals is huge of course it shouldn’t be

axolotlfloof · 02/07/2026 18:26

Bank Holidays cost small businesses and the economy. Take the day off or go in tired. Come on England.

Jovilady22 · 02/07/2026 18:35

Didn’t get a bank holiday when Lando Norris won the formula one world drivers championship last year and he was driving for a British team. And he was taking his life in his hands doing so, not kicking a ball around

MrsVBS · 02/07/2026 18:36

YABU. Not everyone watches football, and the chances of England beating Mexico are slim so people will probably drowning their sorrows instead of celebrating.

busymomtoone · 02/07/2026 18:38

Come off it- it’s not even the final!!! Contrary to popular opinion ( enforced by the media etc) not everyone is obsessed by football , despite its disproportionate airtime versus ANY other sport including rugby, tennis, ice skating , netball, hockey, swimming, cycling etc. Unless you’re seriously proposing that every time any UK country wins anything ( Eurovision anyone?!) we should have a bank hols, then why on earth should this be different?! Maybe , just maybe , if they win it would be different- but a. That’s unlikely and b. Only to pander to mob hysteria. Incidentally, you are aware that unlike ANY other sport , domestic violence increases exponentially during this time whether we win or lose? Crazy!

Nowisthetimeforicecream · 02/07/2026 18:38

God no. I'm loving this world cup as all the matches are on in the middle of the night so nothing is disrupted by them.

Yarboosucks · 02/07/2026 18:48

It is this kind of ridiculous prioritisation and logic that leads to the country being in the state that it is in. A day off so that people can watch the team fail, not least due to the altitude????

Lonelycrab · 02/07/2026 18:48

Pubs open to 5am then on a Sunday night into Monday morning. What could possibly go wrong with that one.

I expect Monday morning rush hour to be… interestingHmm

Every bank holiday costs the UK economy £2.3 billion because of the hit to productivity, and no the spend in bars etc does not come close to balancing it out. In fact you could say that for every bank holiday each adult owes the economy £42. So, no.

We already foot the bill for everyone else's incompetence. What's another £42?

Bluedenimdoglover · 02/07/2026 18:50

If they win the World Cup, you may have a point. Otherwise, no.

BetweenTheThoughts · 02/07/2026 18:54

😂 I suspect plenty of England fans would be very happy with that!
That said, I think the difference is that bank holidays are usually planned well in advance, and it's unlikely any government would introduce one at such short notice for a football match, however big it is.

You sound like one of those people who moans because you normally work from home 2 days a week, but your boss asked you to come in one extra day.

MassiveOvaryaction · 02/07/2026 19:04

OonaStubbs · 02/07/2026 08:25

We have 2 bank holidays for Christmas and 2 for Easter and a lot more people support England at football than regularly go to church.

I feel like if you mention that to the powers that be, they'd be more likely to cut one or more of the existing bank holidays than add an additional sports related one.

FluffOffFFS · 02/07/2026 19:06

Haven't RTFT but I think it would be ridiculous! I follow the football but accept that I will not be able to watch all the games. I'm a teacher and there is serious talk of opening the school later on Monday to accommodate this. It's madness! Our catchment is not very well off and people will suffer if they need to stay off work because the kids are off school. Cynical me is pretty sure it is just to keep attendance figures looking good. This obsession with it coming home is getting a bit pathetic now too, it's the last 16 FGS

Meadowfinch · 02/07/2026 19:09

As a nation, our productivity is already at an all time low, companies are struggling to survive, and you actually think that is a good idea OP ?

God help us !!

NeverSometimesAlways · 02/07/2026 19:09

Many employment contracts state holiday allowance including bank holidays. E.g. 30 days off per year, including bank holidays.

So depending how employers wish to enforce it, people aren’t necessarily getting an extra ‘free’ day off when it comes to additional bank holidays.

MoistVonL · 02/07/2026 19:11

It's only the last 16 - not even the quarter finals (8 teams) or semis (4 teams)

If it were for a final - as if! - I could see an argument, maybe. But second round of knock outs isn't exactly world shatteringly impressive, is it?

BooBooDoodle · 02/07/2026 19:18

My husband booked leave for the Monday months ago as it is our son’s football presentation weekend and he is the coach. It’s an all out time consuming event and my husband has done all the planning and organising as he always does because nobody ever helps out, even when he asks. To give the kids a weekend they deserve, he takes everything on himself. He wanted the Monday off to recoup and used his time in lieu. He was told this morning that all single day leave has been cancelled and no leave is allowed until Tuesday. He’s not arsed about the World Cup, he’s AuDHD and suffers burnout and books days off whenever he knows he has a hefty weekend because he is struggling with overstimulation currently. So next week he will more than likely end up with migraines and cluster headaches, nausea and it will take days for him to regulate and he will zone out. If you know ASD you know the drill.

Lemonyyy · 02/07/2026 19:19

As much as I love a day off, I couldn't give less of a fuck about the world cup, and would be pissed off that this was the catalyst for it.
