To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

You can't just have bank holidays at the drop of a hat. Anyway, it's all part of the experience going into work/school tired the next day if you've stayed up - a bonding experience if you like.

It's not just a football match. It's a cultural event, a milestone that will be remembered for many years. England's last match in the stadium was the famous "Hand of God" match with Maradona.

They're in the last 16, it's not even the final. It's not even the semi-final.

I'm not unique. None of my friends are football fans.

Loads of people aren't into watching football, including myself. I don't enjoy watching sport but I don't expect a medal, I appreciate that lots of people do enjoy it. But I don't think a BH is called for unless we won the World Cup (not likely).

OP, I actually thought you were making a joke! Why on earth should there be a Bank Holiday (which cost the country a lot of money in lost production) because some people want to stay up late for a bloody football match? If they want to stay up, they should book a day's holiday or just make the effort to work. It is NOT important - no more than, say, an English player winning Wimbledon, or our Rugby team winning a cup, or the Ashes, etc.

FFS dont you think think this country's in enough economic mess without adding a bank holiday into the mix with the loss of production, cost to cash strapped employers - just to watch a football match? An important match, I grant you, but if people want to watch take a day holiday! Grrrrrŕ.

My daughters are going to want to watch it, but they have school and DH and I have work!

I don’t think a bank holiday is unreasonable!

Think of all of the young girls who play football missing out on this match!

If it has extra time and penalties they would need to get up at 4:30am to watch it on catch up before going to school!

Even if it was the final it would be a mad thing to do but it’s not.

I work in payroll in schools and the extra bank hold we got for the queens funeral and the coronation were a big enough headache and cost (not everyone works on a Monday so those that don’t have to be given another time off which often meant the school paying for supply staff).

Lets not hand them out willy nilly. As it happens we had annual leave booked for Monday anyway as going to a concert on Sunday night. Whether we can stay awake till 1am is yet to be seen!

A bank holiday for getting into the last 16?! Finals I can understand and I don't like football and I'm in Wales so would never apply to me anyway, but I understand finals. When the Lions play away it's always at mad times of the day, I either book a day of leave or I go to bed early - get up for the match - then go back to bed! You have to keep these things in proportion... If Mimi Xu keeps on improving and goes on to win Wimbledon in the next decade then I think Wales should definitely get a bank holiday and people in Swansea should get two because she's from Swansea and I live in Swansea. Also I think my dad's gardener's daughter might actually coach her too. Three bank holidays for me!

If England win (the World Cup), then a Bank Holiday might be appropriate, but this is only a game for the last 16. Three more matches to win after this one...

You do know that the Scottish bank holiday wasn't an additional holiday and it was only moving the August public holiday forward in Scotland don't you?
