To think England should get a bank holiday this coming Monday?

Since England's World Cup game with Mexico is at 1am Monday morning, it seems only fair that we should get a bank holiday Monday, since Scotland got one for their World Cup game that was in the early hours of a Sunday morning. It would be a nice thing for Keir Starmer to do as one of his final acts as PM.

Most people in Scotland didn't get it. So it didn't really feel like a proper bank holiday. If you do the same it'll only affect a small number of people as most places won't have it. People can take annual leave if it's so important to them.

TreacleMoon2 · 02/07/2026 17:05

Absolutely not, and I say that as someone who watched yesterdays game and plan to watch the Mexico one and still work effectively on Monday (vey early bedtime on Sunday to "bank" sleep).

Settlersa · 02/07/2026 17:05

Extra Bank holidays are generally taken by the public sector causing inconvenience for all, many private companies don't take them

Over 26 million watched the game against DR Congo. That's a great many people.

Or to put it another way, 32-43 million didn't.

Not that many people in Scotland actually got the bank holiday cause the Scottish government didn’t actually fund it.

Because they can’t afford it

lordbaddingham · 02/07/2026 17:18

If it was the final I could get on board but not for the last 16 🤣

The ones who didn’t were too young, too old, not English, too ill or working!!

Settlersa · 02/07/2026 17:23

It will probably all end in tears anyway, like all the times before, though maybe a bit earlier this time.

I think what’s more boring is everyone trying to pretend they’re fun and unique because they don’t like football

I'm not unique. None of my friends are football fans.

Are you known as The Fun Spongers?

Drillsergeant · 02/07/2026 15:31

You can sip wine and read a book when watching some England games…. you don’t miss much!

And who is your team?
Or are you more of a ‘ I will pretend to be cultured, just to impress’
I will leave you to your Biff and Chip and your plonk.

Endorewitch · 02/07/2026 14:28

No it doesnt. Those who are not interested in football ,outnumber rhose who are.
It isnt special. Not the final.
And bad for the economy which is in a pretty bad way anyhow.

The good thing is, if we get a Bank Holiday, you lot won’t need to take it.
And there is more money being generated for our hospitality business, than the cost of a Bank Holiday.
i guess you are not in favour of the extra money being generated, you just want to be miserable and snipey.

OneAquaFatball · 02/07/2026 17:34

at least you’re not an england fan in greece. doesnt start til 3am. not worth going to bed again after especially if it goes to penalties, but way too hot to go to bed at 7 to prepare

Are the women who are more likely to get beaten as a direct result of the football ‘miserable and snipey’?

I'm from the UK. Just hate what the World Cup does to people.

Fingers crossed we follow form and get knocked out soon. 🥰

Why? They’re going to lose. Hardly something to stay up for in the early hrs!

Crikeyalmighty · 02/07/2026 17:39

Thing is though we are in the last 16, if they progress do we have to do it at every stage? - I think it should just be for if we get to the final -

ReflectingPool · 02/07/2026 17:42

Or not interested.

IsawwhatIsaw · 02/07/2026 17:42

I don’t like football at all and avoid watching any of it. I think it gets too much publicity and coverage.
I don’t want a holiday just so people who enjoy it can have extra time off.

Allowingthebreeze · 02/07/2026 17:43

Every bank holiday costs the UK economy £2.3 billion because of the hit to productivity, and no the spend in bars etc does not come close to balancing it out. In fact you could say that for every bank holiday each adult owes the economy £42. So, no.

ReflectingPool · 02/07/2026 17:45

Are you known as The Fun Spongers?

By whom?

ToWhitToWhoo · 02/07/2026 17:48

No. If England actually WIN (hope springs eternal, but...), that might be Bank Holiday-worthy, but not just for getting to this stage. And frankly, the odds are probably on Mexico winning the next match.

ReflectingPool · 02/07/2026 17:48

And who is your team?

Does everyone have to have a team now?
