To find Wimbledon a complete Borefest

Just that. Nearly everyone I know is glued to their TVs for hours watching Wimbledon. Its sooooo boring. And the voice of the presenter always gets on my. neves. Am I the only one in the country who hates it. And the noise of the ball bat bat bat.

OP posts:
UnNiddeRides · 01/07/2026 01:30

i used to find it more interesting when the games were more exciting: shots between the legs, backwards, volleys close to the net. My sister and I were inspired to put on white pleated skirts, Dunlop Green Flash & take our Nastase Junior rackets to the local rec in the hope that the one tennis court would be free.

Now it all seems to be about power and speed of whack, but on the plus side I like to have it on while I’m doing something else like cooking dinner as I like the rhythmic pock, pock, pock that is just background noise.

the80sweregreat · 01/07/2026 05:24

I do watch some sport, but very little in comparison to many people. I do agree that a lot of it is pointless though and I’ve often thought this. Why people want to basically run around after a ball is pretty silly if you think about it too much and some have ended up millionaires or even billionaires from doing something they love. It’s so niche really and only a small percentage can claim this compared to the other millions of people that couldn’t do it and will never get rich doing much more worthwhile jobs that save lives and enrich other peoples lives , yet earn a pittance in comparison to some top flight athletes. I suppose it’s best not to think about it like that though as it is what it is.

I'm sure your silence is oh so much fun.

Good morning!

Your advice here would be greatly appreciated. What should DH do in regards to his loving DWs coldness at this time of great sport? Should he LTB (substitute the word bastard for bitch), or contact a men’s support group.

The diagnosis of the state of my marriage by some @randomchap, was taken lightheartedly as was the intention and meaning of my original post.

He must have pretty poor social skills to keep telling you about subjects he can see you can't even be bothered to feign interest in!

Excellent social skills actually, just quite eccentric and enthusiastic. Love him!

nam3c4ang3 · 01/07/2026 08:57

I mean, if your not a tennis fan then sure - i dont mind it, i used to play and ive been to wimbledon a few times - i tell you whats sickening, the prices of strawberries there 😂

Sorry that I touched a nerve.

Silence in response to a partner's attempt at conversation could be seen as bullying and belittling.

Don't you take pleasure in seeing your other half excited and happy? My late wife loved jazz, and would happily talk to me about it. Seeing her joy made me happy. I learnt enough to be able to hold a conversation on it.

My posts intention was lighthearted. Apologies for not portraying that clearly. I obviously touched a nerve.

Silence can also be affirming!

And iI am sorry for your loss.

No nerve touched. I just felt for your husband, all excited only to be met by silence.

I can't abide tennis, never could, I'm not anti-tennis, it's just not me.

As a kid and teenager, I was constantly barked at by everyone that I must take up tennis, as ''it's what absolutely everyone is doing''. Sod off!

Weeks of tennis, football and cricket. I have no TV by choice, but for a long while, the whole world shuts down and becomes 24/7 obsessed!

I'll try to enter an online competition or freebie, only to find it's somehow connected to sport, so I don't bother!

charliehungerford · 01/07/2026 09:24

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 30/06/2026 11:26

I don't mind watching the finals. But the early stages are booooooring, however much hard graft Annabelle Croft and Clare Balding put in trying to persuade us otherwise.

Dominates telly for two whole weeks and that's after we've suffered through 2 weeks of sodding football.

At the moment both BBC one and two have their schedules totally dominated by Wimbledon and the World Cup. Apart from early morning, news and Eastenders there is hardly anything else to watch. Thankfully very few people are limited to terrestrial television and have other choices but it does annoy me as we have no option but to pay for it.

This is MN, never is the full picture of a situation given or received.

My marriage is full of conversation, love and laughter.

Let’s enjoy Wimbledon or not!

the80sweregreat · 01/07/2026 09:38

You can opt out of the bbc licence fee. I don’t know why the bbc just don’t have I player as a subscription service and have the same model as Netflix and other services like that, but that is a different thread!

Myblueclematis · 01/07/2026 09:42

One of my friends is a huge tennis fan and knows that I don't like it, and don't understand the scoring as I just never watch it. I have zero interest in it.

Doesn't stop her regaling me with whatever match she's watched for hours on end and telling me lots of detail as if I will understand exactly how the game went.

Note to self: Try not to let eyes glaze over 5 minutes after she's started telling me 😆😆

You can
opt out but that means you don’t just lose bbc, you lose all terrestrial broadcast and iplayer. I’ve never understood why they don’t have a BBC sports channel available. Everyone can get their fill of live sport, but would leave the main BBC channels for the regular programming. Tbh aside from the occasional decent drama their daily schedules are repetitive and uninspiring.

the80sweregreat · 01/07/2026 09:51

The BBC getting rid of the licence fee has always been a hot topic. I pay it myself , but many don’t bother.
I agree that an extra sport channel is a good idea, but I suppose it’s the cost of it isn’t it. They must lose a lot of money with people not paying it.

Just to be clear, Licence is to cover only LIVE broadcast. Streaming and catch up is fine without

But we could all say this about things we arent interested in! I have zero interest in any soaps for example, or chat shows, but I realise that lots of people do and that they come as part of the BBC's package.

I also don’t understand the scoring no matter how often it’s explained to me. I think it’s because I find it so dull that my brain shuts down every time anyone starts talking about it

I appreciate that as the national broadcaster they need to have wide appeal, the issue is that when Wimbledon and international football tournaments come along the network is completely taken over by it, leaving very little alternative for anyone who isn’t interested in sports. For example tomorrow bbc2 has solid tennis from 11.00 am until 10.00 pm, and an additional nine hours of tennis and football coverage on BBC 1.

Everanewbie · 01/07/2026 14:59

It is great that the BBC cover so much of Wimbledon.

Live sport on terrestrial tv has been on the decline for years, cricket, golf, rugby and most football is no longer available which means its only the children of households paying for sky that get that lightbulb moment of getting into live sport. Its tragic.

Wimbledon is one of the last great bastions of BBC coverage and its important we keep it that way. We need to be inspiring new generations into sport a) so that we have active healthy kids and b) raise the next generation of stars.

I think this is far more important than soap addicts having to watch an hour later, or god forbid, use the red button or iplayer - for 2 weeks of the year.

CarbootJunction · 01/07/2026 15:14

Is it because you don't understand the scoring system, OP?

Electricsausages · 01/07/2026 15:15

I can only watch bits, usually because of the shreeks, groans, whooping from the crowd “let’s go (whoever) let’s go
the adoration for some players
never talk about the ones who beat the top rank players
yeah I guess I don’t really like it much

DelphiniumBlue · 01/07/2026 17:01

I thinks it’s more interesting than the football, just watched a couple of tense tennis matches this week, high quality players at the top of their game. More riveting than the footie, which at some points has looked like a kick about at the park. The last England game was dull. As one of my sons pointed out, even in a really game there’s probably no more than 4 or 5 goals scored over 90 minutes, whereas in the tennis there’s points happening all the time!

thingisimhere · 01/07/2026 17:22

I do love it but I play tennis 3 times a week and go to Wimbledon with a friend every year. Not keen on football or any other sport.
