AIBU to ask if I can report my neighbour's bright blue house?

I live in a terraced house. My neighbours have painted the back of their house bright blue (think swimming pool blue / like the Mikanos blue). It is horrible and looms over my garden. It’s really going to spoil my enjoyment of my space to have to look at this every day. I spoke to the wife earlier this morning and said it was not to my taste and would they consider changing and she said ‘the beige of your house isn’t to my taste but it’s your house. This is my house.’ And shut the door in my face. WIBU to report them to the council? Can I even do so? Surely you can’t just paint any offensive colour and expect neighbours to live alongside it?

Do you have a problem with the sky, OP?

We are in London! Not a posh part but obviously everywhere in London is expensive!! I don’t want to live near an eyesore.

What constitutes an eyesore though is often a matter of personal taste. Your neighbour could well consider your beige house an eyesore.

Hiddenhouse · 29/06/2026 21:13

This thread is hilarious thanks for the laugh OP!

A house near to me painted itself a very bright colour. It was pretty gross looking. A while later the colour was changed to a paler version. It’s not in a special area. I am not sure if the council got involved but I heard the neighbours didn’t like it. So it’s always worth an ask if it’s that bad. They seemed to be made to change it.

Maybe they didn't like it and chose to change it.

Lifeomars · 29/06/2026 21:40

My neighbours have a back yard filled with rubbish and broken furniture, there are about 10 of them crammed into a two up two down, they deal drugs and are usually shouting at each other until gone midnight. A blue house would be as nothing...

But to look lovely together they'd all need to be of a similar depth of colour, with no massive clashes. Either all pastels and sugared almond colours or all stronger and brighter. If one stood out as too dark/bright against the others it would look jarring and awful.

Well perhaps the Op's neighbours will be inspired by the blue house

I used to live in a village where there was a row of very old, very picturesque , thatched cottages - each painted a different colour. Looked lovely.

Sounds gorgeous, it would really lift my spirits to see something like that

From what I heard that wasn’t the case.

I'm pretty certain that Toveylove is OPs alternative account or a troll. They throw around a lot of therapy speech of someone trying to sound smart but they are also terminally online so don't realize that people don't talk like that in real life.

You can ask mumsnet to check this and you will see it’s not true. I am being roasted on here and ok I asked for it. I don’t like blue. But I don’t like being accused of underhandedness by posting from an alt account.

Get some blue tint sunglasses. It will just look white again.

Nine2five · 29/06/2026 22:11

I’m thinking the neighbours will be considering painting the other three walls after this.

My house is blue and my neighbours house is a sickly greeny yellow. I personally wouldn’t have chosen his green colour, but then again, he likes it so that’s ok. It’s really none of my business and my blue house, which maybe he’s not fond of is none of his business.

We are good neighbours though and we look out for each other. He’s elderly and we help him with his garden 🪏, he brings us eggs from his chickens. Life is good 😊

Besafeeatcake · 29/06/2026 22:12

Your entitlement and arrogance are off the chart.

Its their house. They can do what they like.

How dare you think that somehow some authority should care about a perfectly fine paint colour .

I laughed out loud that you told her it’s not to your taste and asked her to change it. I don’t think she cares if it’s to your taste or not. Did you really think she would change it just because you don’t like it?

Also you mention in one of your replies you wish she would at least compromise. What is a compromise here? She either leaves it blue to suit herself or goes back to beige to suit you. What’s a compromise/middle ground in this situation?

Neighbour paints one half of the wall white.

Neighbour paints white stripes on her house.

OP also paints her house blue so that it matches.

Tortephant · 29/06/2026 22:24

May be a bright colour will do you good Op, you clearly need cheering up from your beige world. Offensive is a strange word to choose!

Roomonthe3rdfloor · 29/06/2026 22:34

I’d have slammed my door in your face too.

Beanosaurus · 29/06/2026 22:40

South London? I see your blue back wall and raise you this:

It's faded a lot in recent years, but when I was a kid it was even more lurid than this. https://ideal-homes.gre.ac.uk/__data/assets/image/0010/356383/loampit-hill-01446-750.jpg
I could've sworn that the stonework was bright pink at one point, but can't find any photos of that.

When the flag thing was at its height last year a man at one of the towns out in the county in my area had the front of his house painted like the Union Jack. If I remember rightly it was a terrace, so the people living on either side were not exactly thrilled

JennyForeigner · 29/06/2026 23:54

YABU for not dressing as a smurf and taking a picture against it.

@LaPerruque Haha, I was just about to mention the Headington Shark! I used to live just around the corner from it, it's fantastic.

It was always my landmark to start getting my stuff together coming doen Headington Hill on the Oxford Tube!

I feel I’m getting quite a hard time of it. Ok. I understand I can’t change their house or complain. Surely it’s ok to feel a bit annoyed that my lovely garden will now not be such a sanctuary for me. The colour really is overbearing in our street where the other homes are mostly white/beige, brick or pebbledash?

You are getting a hard time over this because you feel you are entitled to pick and choose how other people live and you seriously need to get over yourself.

There are privacy screens you can set up in your garden if you are that bothered. You could also rearrange your seating so you can look at your own house instead of your neighbours.

Think of ways to manage your own space because you have zero control over space that doesn’t belong to you.

In case it wasn’t really clear yet, no one cares what you think. This is just a fact of life you should come to terms with. Getting offended and having a tantrum doesn’t change that.
