AIBU to ask if I can report my neighbour's bright blue house?

Katey83 · Today 13:43

I live in a terraced house. My neighbours have painted the back of their house bright blue (think swimming pool blue / like the Mikanos blue). It is horrible and looms over my garden. It’s really going to spoil my enjoyment of my space to have to look at this every day. I spoke to the wife earlier this morning and said it was not to my taste and would they consider changing and she said ‘the beige of your house isn’t to my taste but it’s your house. This is my house.’ And shut the door in my face. WIBU to report them to the council? Can I even do so? Surely you can’t just paint any offensive colour and expect neighbours to live alongside it?

Be grateful you don't live next to me then, my little terraced house has been terracotta, then pink, and is now purple! All my neighbours say how cheerful it looks, and delivery people love it, as its so easy to find! I honestly think that unless you are in a conservation area, or your house is listed, your neighbour can paint it whatever colour they want. Sorry.

Inspired by all the talk of colour on this thread, I have ordered https://www.farrow-ball.com/paint/pea-flower-tea www.farrow-ball.com/paint/pea-flower-tea]]]] this for my front door, together with new door furniture 😁

What a beautiful shade.

I laughed out loud that you told her it’s not to your taste and asked her to change it. I don’t think she cares if it’s to your taste or not. Did you really think she would change it just because you don’t like it?

Also you mention in one of your replies you wish she would at least compromise. What is a compromise here? She either leaves it blue to suit herself or goes back to beige to suit you. What’s a compromise/middle ground in this situation?

I think a good compromise would be the neighbour tones down the blue, but uses glow in the dark paint to write a, erm.... "nice" message in 2 foot letters to CF OP that shows up at night.

Love this 🤣

I don’t think you’ve got a leg to stand on OP. There’s a house near us a really sickening shade of Parma violet lavender. Legend has it he had an application for an extension objected to by neighbours so in response painted the whole house the most offensive to the eye colour he could find. I have to admire him…

I think it’s hilarious that you knocked on neighbour’s door and asked them to repaint because you don’t like the colour. In what world would someone do that!

Years ago a neighbour knocked on our door to tell our guest to move his car because she could see it out of her window 😂

onyxtulip · Today 19:57

If this is real, you are being ridiculous and very entitled. Its not your house

😂 was it @Katey83?.

This wouldn’t bother me. It would definitely bother my nosy interfering neighbour, you have given me a good idea. I am fond of bright colours.

Was the car Mikanos blue as well? 😆

People keep saying this. You will see that there are some posters who agree - this is not Bristol. It’s a south London street with no other colourful houses. It’s intrusive and out of keeping to suddenly have a bright blue wall looming over my garden. Just because a lot of people don’t agree it doesn’t = wind up!

how much time do you spend in your back garden staring towards your house / at your neighbours house? just turn around!

I thought there might be planning laws that stopped this kind of thing - it seems mad you can just paint your house whatever colour you like! But apparently not.

A house near to me painted itself a very bright colour. It was pretty gross looking. A while later the colour was changed to a paler version. It’s not in a special area. I am not sure if the council got involved but I heard the neighbours didn’t like it. So it’s always worth an ask if it’s that bad. They seemed to be made to change it.

letmebetheone · Today 20:03

Sorry OP but I think you will just need to get used to it. This time next year you could have blue at one side and green at the other side!
Personally I love the painted houses. Its becoming a lot more common where we live that the terraced houses are getting painted bright colours. It seems that it only takes one house to star the trend then others join in. The row at the bottom end of our road has 7 houses each a different colour, I quite like it.

I love them too. They are way more interesting than beige and pebbledash. I think when I go on my next 'mental health walk', I will use picking out the coloured houses as my mindfulness exercise 🙂

Who would you report it to?? The colour police? The vibrancy inspector?

Crediting you for my new username 😅

I love the OP’s indignation. “This is not Bristol!”. Unfortunately your comments about the husband and his trade only reinforce the appearance of you being an insufferable snob. Personally I’d rather live next door to a tradie in his blue house than Hyacinth Bucket.

MrsMoastyToasty · Today 20:08

@CaptainMyCaptain North Street, Bedminster.
Also in Bristol is Totterdown, Southville, and more recently Charlton Hayes with coloured houses.
There was a house in Keynsham with abstract art painted on it. Unfortunately I can't find a photo of it.

Sure it will be a good sign post for directing visitors/ deliveroo s/ parcels
Look on the bright (mykonos blue) side

I used to live next door to a pink and blue house, the neighbour on the other side had annoyed them and this was their revenge. It was a great focal point for giving anyone directions to my house!

Loud. Drinks beer day and night. Shouts at the children when they are playing in the garden. Wears clothes with holes in even though they live in a £500k house. Odd.

Where in London are you where a house costs £500K?

Someone may already have mentioned Totterdown, Bristol? Sought after for its colourful houses!

My Totterdown house was a beautiful duck egg blue. Well, I thought is was beautiful and no neighbours requested I repaint it.

I don’t understand this

Balamory character, all the houses are painted bright colours in Balamory

Frenzi · Today 20:33

I love colourful houses and I love the neighbours response.

However, the only way to know if you complain about it is to ring your local planning department. If they are wrong and are made to paint it a different colour they will of course know it was you that complained as you have already been round there moaning about it.

Ketzele · Today 20:38

A house round the corner from me painted their house in the union jack. Not Brexit, not football, just the UK Olympics. I quite like it!

Don’t be ridiculous. This thread is the gift that keeps on giving. Many of us have said that we probably wouldn’t like the bright blue paint but there really is nothing that can be done about it. However, it is the sheer snobbery that drips through every single one of @Katey83‘s posts that keeps us reading for each new instalment. I think this thread should go into classics.

I'm pretty certain that Toveylove is OPs alternative account or a troll. They throw around a lot of therapy speech of someone trying to sound smart but they are also terminally online so don't realize that people don't talk like that in real life.
