AIBU to ask if I can report my neighbour's bright blue house?

Katey83 · Today 13:43

I live in a terraced house. My neighbours have painted the back of their house bright blue (think swimming pool blue / like the Mikanos blue). It is horrible and looms over my garden. It’s really going to spoil my enjoyment of my space to have to look at this every day. I spoke to the wife earlier this morning and said it was not to my taste and would they consider changing and she said ‘the beige of your house isn’t to my taste but it’s your house. This is my house.’ And shut the door in my face. WIBU to report them to the council? Can I even do so? Surely you can’t just paint any offensive colour and expect neighbours to live alongside it?

@LaPerruque Haha, I was just about to mention the Headington Shark! I used to live just around the corner from it, it's fantastic.

Is it this house ?? 🤣

You can, it's a streen scene matter, the planners might be interested, but don't be surprised if they don't care too...

Some people have horrible taste.

I voted YANBU.

But I think you've got no choice. By all means speak to the council but unless it's listed or conservation they can have it as they please.

I mean if it had 'fuck off' in giant letters then maybe not but it's just a blue wall.

I think it may well do now they know the OP's feelings! 🤣

I don’t understand this

What’s the story in Balamory wouldn’t you like to know?

I think this is a classic MN example of most people commenting would probably hate this if it was their situation but very happy to be reasonable about it because it’s not their problem it’s yours.

Can you grow some tall plants etc to screen the view a bit?

If it's good enough for posh Chelsea it's good enough for anywhere! Paint yours a jolly colour and start a trend

Godfrey Street. We used to live round the corner from there. It was lovely and cheerful on those endless grey winter days.

We now live in a different area of London, well known for colourful houses. The tourists love them.

Embrace it OP.

I think it’s hilarious that you knocked on neighbour’s door and asked them to repaint because you don’t like the colour. In what world would someone do that!

AgentPidge · Today 19:33

I would have a look at your local council's website and see if there are any restrictions. Otherwise, I think you'll get used to it. At least it's not as bad as noise from neighbours.

I feel I’m getting quite a hard time of it. Ok. I understand I can’t change their house or complain. Surely it’s ok to feel a bit annoyed that my lovely garden will now not be such a sanctuary for me. The colour really is overbearing in our street where the other homes are mostly white/beige, brick or pebbledash?

You can feel however you want.

That doesn't mean you should also go onto your neighbour's property, knock their door and disturb their peace to tell them you don't like something about their house.

If living communally is such a bother, you need to relocate to a detached property, in the middle of nowhere!

She'd probably complain that some of the wildlife were too colourful.

Can we leave misogyny out of the paint discussion.
It spoils it somewhat.

You should visit Bristol. This is how houses are painted

I would say this is the colour though their window sills and edgings are in white.

That’s play doh blue 🤣🤣🤣🤣 ghastly

Someone may already have mentioned Totterdown, Bristol? Sought after for its colourful houses!

This is probably true, but I doubt many would have the gall to knock on their neighbour's door, insult their taste and then ask them to go to the expense of repainting their property to a colour more to their liking.

Most people would draw the line at whinging to their mates about it.

The OP made quite a point of telling us she is not in Bristol. Whereabouts are those buildings? I lived in Bristol in the 70s and houses in Totterdown were colourful then although not all in good repair at that time.

It's VERY like this, though thankfully not at the front.

But this house was in a conservation area and yours isn't.

Tekknonan · Today 19:45

I feel inspired now to paint my house in bubble-gum-pink and magenta stripes.

One of my back bedroom windows is half covered by a temporary paper blind from when we moved in (16 years ago) and a shredded bin liner.
My neighbour is a gossipy twat though, and she has windchimes. So the window is staying that way 😆

Ah jesus I'd be covering the whole windows in temporary paper blinds in that case. Or you could just paint them blue?

My neighbour has windchimes fucking everywhere and fuck me, the amount of times I've planned a heist to get rid of them. I swear to god she put them there to piss me off, and it's working

BlackCat14 · Today 19:49

I laughed out loud that you told her it’s not to your taste and asked her to change it. I don’t think she cares if it’s to your taste or not. Did you really think she would change it just because you don’t like it?

Also you mention in one of your replies you wish she would at least compromise. What is a compromise here? She either leaves it blue to suit herself or goes back to beige to suit you. What’s a compromise/middle ground in this situation?

chocoluv · Today 19:50

You must live a very miserable life if this affects you so much.

Some people have different tastes to you and that’s ok.

Are you always this controlling?

Charmatt · Today 19:50

Portree and Tobermory are both very pretty and well worth a visit, OP!

You could create your own version of them - paint yours pink and join in!
