Andy Burnham should be delivering Labours manifesto, not his own

Fair enough, have your ideas on HOW to do it, but his plans to further devolution were not voted on. Surely this is wrong.

She's knocking Labour while they are down. I'm not sure why it's expected she should be giving them a break.

Cos be kind wimminz. I like her and Keir was a patronising twat. He ran out of assistants to resign for his fuck ups and even Rachel Reeves, the ultimate human shield, deserted him at the death. Very interesting that not a single serving Labour MP was considered as PM worthy and they had to parachute in a mayor to save them. Surround yourself with incompetents so they can't depose you is pathetic.
I like Andy Burnham so far and as a northerner don't mind the fact he's talking devolution. Hope he does well for the country.

@TemperanceWest

Yes, she could drop the insults and I would like to see that too. But I think there have only been a few? I am aware of the ‘pair of eyelashes’ one and spiteful class warrior (personally agree with that), but what are the other insults?

Bellic · 29/06/2026 13:20

SapphOhNo · 29/06/2026 13:00

We're still waiting for evidence from you about Burnham being Far Left. Chop chop.

He’s further left than Keir though, can we agree on that? Talk of a wealth tax and refunding the WASPI women, putting more cash in the working class people’s pocket.

And can we agree that Keir Starmer’s Labour Party were ‘left’? Do we call Burnham ‘further left than normal left but not far left’?

Clearinguptheclutter · 29/06/2026 13:22

I predict he will go for some quick wins in an attempt to perk up the Labour Party and National mood then call an election either in the autumn or spring

i like AB and I hope he has a decent crack at it but I’m annoyed about him standing down as mayor of GM and the shenanigans more generally. I don’t think the revolving door of prime ministers is a good thing at all.

JoshLymanSwagger · 29/06/2026 13:25

He can let his jaw waggle as much as he wants promising you the earth...

Where the fuck is the money to back this up coming from?

Starmer was hamstrung from the start by the left of his party.

Hopefully the more liberal, centrist return the favour to the great God of the North.

Saint Andy of Manchester.

I just hope he sticks to the manifesto pledges of the party he has been elected to represent.

Yeah, I don't believe that for one minute either

BoredZelda · 29/06/2026 13:20

It’s pretty easy to remain as the shadow leader. Even the shit ones outlast the most accomplished PMs.

I doubt it’s that ‘easy’. She’s successful, more than most dragging her down. And Starmer, who was the shit one, didn’t last thank god.

Comparing Phillipson to the Gestapo. Saying Ed Miliband is "acting like the Nigerian military dictators".

Do Nigerian military dictators tell you to go all-electric with solar panels, a heat pump and an electric car? 🙄

She was using humour to make a point.

And in the case of Philipson, this was just after she'd accused someone of being racist (but was being serious).

JoshLymanSwagger · 29/06/2026 13:31

She had quite the rant:
"Nigeria is an oil-producing country that never had any electricity. Why? Because it had bad policies from military dictatorships, people who they didn’t care what people, what the country wanted.

‘They imposed socialism on the country, they took over all of the oil, you know, the oil production, they had a national state oil producer, and it failed. Ed Miliband is actually doing the same thing, he wants to do more state control. He has terrible policies that are reducing our capacity, reducing our energy security.

‘Having lived under both, I think I’m uniquely placed to make that comparison. Yes, Ed Miliband is acting like the Nigerian military dictators who ruined a lot of that country’s economic potential and made it so much poorer, and in some cases bankrupted the country.’

LuckyHazelFox · 29/06/2026 13:36

We're back to hurty words, again, being presented as more serious than a failing economy. Serious deflecting from poor government leadership. None of this nonsense will be fazing KB.

canthavetoomanylights · 29/06/2026 13:39

Aside from whether we like him and how good we think he’s been for Manchester, if he’s to be the new PM he has to deliver the election manifesto or we need an election.
He also needs to get off his North high horse and realise he’s touting to lead the country. The whole country.
The whole thing is corrupt.

It definitely won't faze her.

LuckyHazelFox · 29/06/2026 13:42

She wipes the floor with Labour and was on fine form after the King's speech. I get the feeling she's only getting warmed up. Bring on Burnham.

I think she will have fun with Burnham. With Starmer it was a bit like she was boxing with a sack of potatoes - Burnham will be bring a bit of wit to the debate.

JoshLymanSwagger · 29/06/2026 13:45

@canthavetoomanylights Agreed.

He won't stick to the manifesto. He can't. He's made "promises" - those awkward political ones which are seldom kept and often broken.

It really doesn't matter who anybody voted for at the last election, none of us voted for this.

WildWindySeascape · 29/06/2026 13:45

@TemperanceWest

I am entirely on board with Kemi’s Nigerian dictator comments with that context. She is making a point which is vitally important given the difficulties with our economy. This is different to name calling and throwing insults, she is talking about conduct and using a powerful example to make her point.

WildWindySeascape · 29/06/2026 13:50

@canthavetoomanylights

Do you mean the whole thing is unfair and in democratic or do you mean corrupt? I can’t imagine see the unfairness and how undemocratic it is for Burnham to be crowned and bring in changes that are outside the manifesto but I am not aware of any corruption.

Where is this rule written?

The last time we had a prime minister who came to power in an election and left power because of an election was Ted Heath. We have had more modern prime ministers who took power outside of an election.

The Tories had a revolving door of PMs, and thank goodness we could get rid of the likes of Truss who put us economically where we are now. It means that Farage can decide never to be prime minister even though he pretends he will in order to try to get a Reform win.

That’s our system, we don’t elect prime ministers, we elect MPs. Nothing corrupt about it. If you don't understand that, maybe you should refrain from commenting on politics, and do us a favour and don’t vote in the next election.

You must be very keen on the policies in the 2024 labour manifesto OP.

If you’re not, why are you so set on supporting them?

He should do whatever it takes to improve the country as much as possible. Wouldn’t you want that whether it’s in the manifesto or not?

In reality I suspect you can rest easy as he’s not going to deviate very much at all. And that’s a bad thing for all of us.

canthavetoomanylights · 29/06/2026 13:54

Perhaps corrupt is too strong a word, but the sneaky manoeuvring to keep their jobs is wrong.
My dear old (long departed) dad said all politicians only had themselves in mind. So true.

People really do hyper focus on her words rather than losing a bad PM.

canthavetoomanylights · 29/06/2026 13:55

We elect a party based on their manifesto. Or at least I do. I don’t then want them to change their plans when they fail to deliver the first one.
