Bums hanging out of the bottom of teeny tiny shorts

Noodleschicken · Yesterday 20:42

Don’t know if this really AIBU or a question!
AIBU to think that shorts have become way too short ?
I have seen a LOT of girls in shorts today - with their bum cheeks hanging out the bottom ! Personally I wouldn’t let my daughter out like that. And I wouldn’t were them myself (I would give everyone nightmares !).
so what’s the consensus on bums hanging out of shorts ?

Unfortunately if you look at pop music today it’s like feminism never happened. Half if not more of the most popular female stars are stripped off half the time - Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, Black Pink, Beyoncé, Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa etc

'Female stars nowadays' eh? I assume you haven't seen a photo of any female pop stars since the 1950s if you are shocked by contemporary stage attire and that you have never heard of a popular singer called Madonna who had a few hits from the 80s onwards!
Seriously though, as someone who is a huge fan of many of the artists you name, particularly my queen, Taylor Swift, I think this is a gross and unfair characterisation of these talented women. Female pop stars of today are far more likely to write their own music, play multiple instruments and have a much greater level of control over their image and careers than was typically the case in times gone by. Yes, Sabrina Carpenter dresses saucily on stage, but she is a grown woman and her image in keeping with her fun, catchy and frequently cheeky music.
As for Taylor, yes, as part of the epic Eras tour shows, comprising three to four hours of extraordinary and often gruelling choreography, and dazzling sets and costume changes, some of her outfits were more skimpy than others, but completely suitable for a professional dancer to where while engaging in energetic and complex choreography. Did you want her to wear a full length ballgown throughout the whole show? She does in fact where some long flowing outfits as part of her dazzling and extensive array of stage outfits, but she can hardly be expected to do so for the whole show! People often comment on what a classy dresser TS is off-stage, so she seems like a weird subject for your ire. Not that I think it should matter how any woman chooses to dress, famous or not, as long as they are happy.

😂 when you say it like that, it is very odd. It's like saying, lads I can wear whatever I want and you can't stop me so I'm going to parade around with my butt cheeks hanging out. But if you comment on it or come on to me too aggressively, it's game over for you. Ya, I think gender dominance is a part of it alright. I hope they are actually wearing it for themselves like they say

Edited

They know young men are not going to approach them, not in the way that used to be normal if maybe too pushy sometimes, many young men totally ignore women now, not sure if that is because they don"t know what sex they are themselves or if the girls are too choosy and think they can snag a footballer because they see themselves as "hot" so ordinary young guys don"t bother, or if it is online social dynamics influencers preaching about "indifference" etc. This all feeds into it, going out in a group dressed like a hip hop video that would have been censored a few years ago just screams - "I"m here, look at me, I have a body, pay attention to me...please!" The danger starts when the less confident girls who are just following the pack end up wandering about drunk after a club, then they are in danger from real predators who might be triggered by the clothing, or see it as an invitation.

I normally don’t care but I was shocked today by an obese young lady who had A LOT of uncovered bum right in front of my car window in an Aldi car park for some time (I was waiting for dh with dc in the car).

She was wearing something supposedly like a scort but it was ridiculously small and tight and I will indeed have nightmares as will probably my dc.

It was public indecency. But who to report to and what could they do?!

Human evolution has officially turned into regression.

I hope you would have been equally grossed out if she was slim

Yodellayhehoo · Today 15:00

narcASD · Today 00:21

I don't like it, no need for everyone to see your arse, same with topless men, put it away

Or men that unbutton several shirt buttons is really cringe too

Yodellayhehoo · Today 15:02

OtterlyAstounding · Today 05:35

I don't want to see the arse cheeks of men and teenage boys hanging out of teeny tiny shorts while they strut about the high street, or their bulges in skin tight leggings, and my bar is set no differently for women.

Obviously though, it's women and girls catering to the male gaze or generally putting their value in their sex appeal, not men and teenage boys who expose themselves like that.

Equally, I don't want to get an eyeful of either men's or women's nipples while out and about.

The bare minimum for civility should be entirely covering one's bottom, one's genitals (in such a way that people can't see the clear outline of said genitals), and covering one's breasts (male or female). It's really not a big ask.

Spot on

I saw people walking along the beach esplanade in thong bikinis. They looked like they had bare bums. It looked silly

It is silly, and they are silly, but large numbers of the public have no self-awareness or individual thought process.

Allseeingallknowing · Today 15:11

Beamsss · Today 10:54

This is true. Very overweight young people seem happy to wear revealing clothes now, when they (the few) would have kept well covered back then.....which is a good thing?

Definitely not!

Allseeingallknowing · Today 15:15

Lemonymint · Today 06:18

I just can't help wondering how anybody persuaded young women that it was empowering to expose their buttocks to public view. Why would anybody believe that? Anyway, I feel public buttock baring and display is something best left to other primates like baboons.

Oooh you’ll upset Gloria! You’re right, though!

No self respect or sense of responsibility. I think they are perfectly aware that what they are showing, is vulgar and disgusting and likely to attract the wrong sort of attention.

We have teleported back to Victorian times…

This thread is sad. I have never worn revealing clothes but anyone has the right to do so if they want. Telling your daughters that they will be judged and catcalled is so bloody disgusting. And laughing about schoolgirls being told they are tarty is insane.

But their daughters should be told that they will be judged and catcalled- because they are! What is disgusting is the fact that are walking around knowing they are displaying their wares!

Kokonimater · Today 15:24

MeganM3 · Yesterday 20:49

It’s hardly a new thing is it. Very popular year in year out for over a decade!

No. This is different. Yes shorts and short shorts have been around. But the new ones literally have the lower buttocks on show. And I’ve seen a young woman out wearing a thong. I don’t know what to think

Their what?

I don't like this trend either, as my posts will show, and I don't think it's in good taste, but are you actually suggesting that women who wear revealing clothes must be for sale? That they have become commodities?

That’s the message they are giving out if they are showing their wares, whether they like it or not. They are indecent and vulgar

Flamingojune · Today 15:35

Underage teenage arses on display will keep a lot of the male population happy. If that's the aim then crack on. Scuse pun

They absolutely are not, that's something that's come out of your own head and you're blaming and projecting it on them. It's pretty bad taste and unpleasant, but no, there's nothing that suggests to any decent or reasonably intelligent person that they must be actually objects for sale, especially given the age of some of them. Stop it.

As with all trends, when people are laughing at you online it is over! They are officially no longer edgy or cool, LOL.

SuitcaseAndSecrets · Today 15:41

I wore them in the 70s.. made my own cutting up a pair of old jeans. Frayed the edges.. wore with cheese cloth top that tied at under the bust.. it's nothing new.. oh to be 18 again with the lovely figure l had then.. lovely long legs. Pert bum and boob's that stayed up... unfortunately I'm now 68.. as long as no bits on show.. live and let live.

You don’t agree that walking along with your cheeks hanging out your teeny shorts is indecent or vulgar? They must be fully aware of the effect they are having. They are not doing it to keep cool.

This comment is absolutely shocking. I am horrified and dismayed to see a commenter on a largely female forum trotting out such blatant, offensive and outdated victim-blaming rhetoric.
Women and girls are not responsible for the criminal and predatory behaviour of men. Implying that a man cannot prevent himself from raping a woman because she is wearing a short skirt is both stunningly ignorant and complete nonsense.
I had thought the dangerous argument that a rape victim was 'asking for it' because of the way she was dressed was largely consigned to the dustbin of history. I had hoped that most intelligent people understood that it has been proved that men still commit rape regardless of how women dress. This is why rape is at least as common in countries where women are legally obliged to cover up completely. This is because rape is about male power and control and not due to the fact these poor boys can't help themselves from attacking a woman because she was flashing too much flesh.
I hope MN remove this disgusting comment swiftly.

Surely it’s common sense to dress respectfully and have personal responsibility? In theory, anyone could walk around naked and not attract undesirable attention, but we all know real life is not like that. People who dress with their genitalia on show are not ignorant of the effect they will have on some people. Common sense, really!

In my opinion I wouldn't be telling girls that they deserved to be raped if they weren't wearing a floor-length kaftan and cardigan at all times so as not to inadvertently inflame a poor, helpless man passing by who, naturally, would have no choice but to attack the provocative minx as a result.
I never wear shorts of any length, my preference. However, I am intelligent enough not to believe that young women deserve to be raped for doing so and am disturbed that you seem to disagree with me.
