To be cheesed off with Universal Credit entry fees?

1000 replies

MaturingCheeseball · 28/06/2026 11:43

I know it’s been done before, but…

I thought I’d like to visit Chatsworth House with (teenage) dd. The cost is £33 each PLUS parking at £7.50. So £73.50.

Then I saw the universal credit/pension credit/pip etc price. THREE POUNDS. And free parking! So £6.00 for two adults (age 17+).

I do not have 12 times as much money as someone on these benefits. I doubt many people do. I’m not begrudging the disadvantaged a day out, but come on! The price differential is ludicrous.

When I saw the £73 price I just decided we couldn’t go, and so be it. But upon seeing the potential for a £6 entry, it made me feel mugged off.

The jealousy of UC claimants (and council house tenants) on this site is getting out of hand.

I know right? If it's so easy and fun to be reliant on benefits why complain on here when you could just claim yourself?

Tableforjoan · 28/06/2026 11:46

If you know someone on uc as long as they go with you, they can get something like 5 tickets.

Companies are doing it because they want to I expect it counts as part of charitable giving or something.

MaturingCheeseball · 28/06/2026 11:49

There’s always someone who says “just claim yourself” - really?

And if I find someone on a benefit to go with it’s £3 for me too? And several others? Not right. Really not right.

I wonder how high the take up is for schemes like this?

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 28/06/2026 11:53

And because they don't work or only work 12 hours a week, they can go when they like.

I think that’s because it’s reflecting the mood of the nation, and initiatives like this really don’t help.

This again? But thanks for letting people know about this

Darragon · 28/06/2026 11:55

YANBU OP but on another thread we were told that UC claimants deserve free holibobs at the taxpayer’s expense so I doubt anyone will see the unfairness of these days out. Best get your hard hat on!

MaturingCheeseball · 28/06/2026 11:56

But it’s got to a point where it’s “working bashing”. As I said, I do not have 12 x more money at my disposal than a person on even the minimum benefits.

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 28/06/2026 11:57

Jealousy is the wrong word. It's what posters always say - quit work and go on benefits yourself if it's so easy... the media lies... it's all a right-wing conspiracy to whip up discontent... people don't choose to be on benefits yadda yadda.

There is a general feeling in the UK that our welfare system is a disincentive to work. People who are physically/mentally able to get a job are maintained to a comfortable standard and can get extras such as the cheap entry to Chatsworth which is out of the pocket of people working long hours. It's the unfairness which riles people up. It's not "jealousy".

We do mix with non UC claimants too you know. Obviously as one of the riff raff I’m very grateful to be acknowledge milady.
only way in the world I can do a zoo trip with mine is through this system, if you don’t like it I suggest you just suck it up

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 28/06/2026 11:58

I thought that the end of the 2 child benefit cap had lifted them all out of poverty?

THisbackwithavengeance · 28/06/2026 11:58

lol at all the defensive replies on here. I agree with the OP. In this country you are penalised at every turn for trying to do the right thing and contribute to society. And lazy bastards get away with it. And no, I don’t want to give up work and claim UC instead because I’ve got self respect.

Don’t click on the thread then, it was very obvious what the content was from the title. Zero need to come on and tell people what they can and can’t discuss.

bestcatlife · 28/06/2026 11:59

@MaturingCheeseballjust claim UC then you can get the discount. Easy, right?

What do you want? Prices for rose on certain benefits increased or general admission decreased? Two very different things.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 28/06/2026 11:58

I thought that the end of the 2 child benefit cap had lifted them all out of poverty?

Has anyone defined what this actually means yet? It’s often repeated by every Labour MP. So the simple removal of that cap means that all children in families where the cap existed are now not in poverty? How is poverty defined? I suppose I need to do my own “research”.

MyLimeGuide · 28/06/2026 12:00

Its the way the UK is run unfortunately. The less you put in the more you get out.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/06/2026 12:00

Yeah, how dare those elderly and disabled people and carers with a whole £86.45 income a week be encouraged to visit. It's causing the downfall of society as we know it - of course a carer should be left with £12.95 for the week if they are so above themselves to think that they're wanted at a stately home.

Stressedandgrey · 28/06/2026 12:01

A quick Google tells me that 32% of UC claimants work.
So you are talking about people who work on low incomes, are out of work and looking at the rest of the list of benefits that are eligible it's those who are disabled etc.

I think what you really mean is you don't want the plebs on low incomes going to the same place as you.

Sux2buthen · 28/06/2026 11:58

But the only way I could go to Chatsworth is through this scheme! That’s my point - why do people assume that working = Elon Musk, not working = oh, poor needy person. Nowt in between.

YANBU op and I think most people would agree with you (or voting figures suggest so). These kinds of cultural visits have become far too expensive, at a time when most people have far less disposable income than a decade ago. It’s not a UC claimant problem though, it’s a capitalism problem - work doesn’t pay enough for people to live on, so UC exists, and places like Chatsworth operate for profit (under the charity banner, so it all looks nice and legit), so can charge wtf they like.

According to Google re: Chatswoth.

Total Income: The charity generates approximately £19.35 million annually.
Operating Expenses: Day-to-day operations and charitable activities account for about £15.21 million of that.
Net Profit / Surplus: The trust brings in roughly £1.66 million in net incoming resources.
