To think we need to start talking about the lack of jobs?

Newmeagain · 27/06/2026 21:57

This is prompted by quite a few threads I have read recently, from parents of young people looking for jobs or posters themselves struggling with finding a job.

I feel like a lot of responses are completely out of touch and people are not aware how hard it is right now. There are no “supermarket jobs” etc that you can just pick up.

I think this is having a particularly significant impact on school leavers and graduates looking for their first full time job, students wanting part time work and also anyone over 50 who suddenly finds themselves unemployed.

I have been out of work since August last year. Was told by a recruiter that in his 30 years of work that he’s never seen the market this bad.

I have applied hundreds of jobs. It’s absolutely brutal.

Then you need to look at why. Thousands ate employed every week. Why not you.

DH has been unemployed for two years now. 75% of the interviews he's had he's got through to final round only for the job (tech consulting) to be pulled - it's heartbreaking.

Edited

2 years. Maybe 'tech consulting' isn't a thing. Time to think differently.

You are so out of touch i don't know what to say.

Wow. Just wow.

That's the issue isn't it. Your response after nearly a year unemployed is to think my post warrants that response.
My daughter moved to England in July last year. She has no degree and no connection in England that would enhance employment. She said the Job market was difficult. She was full time employed in September.

Reallynotthatbothered · 28/06/2026 01:23

My friends daughter really wants to work in the heritage sector. Two amazing traineeships have come up and state they’re keen to employ BAME or people from LGBT+ communities. I absolutely support the BAME drive - there’s so much talent that gets ignored by a predominantly white, middle-class monopolisation of heritage BUT the LGBTQ+? It’s an invitation for men (still invariably white) with rolled up trousers, mullets, moustaches and a bit of hair colouring, to waltz into jobs that they would have got as straight white males if they had the right credentials. I’ve advised her daughter to emphasise any gender courses she’s taken (ie. LGBT representation in a museum setting) to infer a non-binary status, wear a fake septum ring and declare themselves an intersectional feminist in order to stand the slimmest chance of getting a position. There’s a lot of hoops to jump through and a lot of companies are wanting to adjust their employee demographic in a very cynical way.

And all these ‘student’ jobs? Seriously depleted, especially over the summer when they know you’re returning to another city in September. And then anyone over 50 wanting a supermarket job when there’s a swathe of under 21s they could employ for cheaper?

it’s tough out there.

RoyalIris · 28/06/2026 01:24

For those with late teens getting part time jobs like in a pharmacy, how are they getting them? Responding to adverts? Wandering in? Or do you know someone?

re: the car parking, the stewards at events near me are volunteers… this is also something more common. The Saturday job I started on at 14 in the 80s is now a voluntary position…

My work was recruiting, 50% didn’t reply to interview requests, then out of the ones that did, 50% didn’t actually turn up! Several that turned up arrived in jeans and trainers

Out of interest what was the role being advertised

Well that’s great for your daughter. Genuinely impressive.

Just don't assume that everyone has the same experience just because she did.

For what it’s worth, I’m not in England and currently living in one of (if not, the most) competitive cities in the world. On a visa. In a politically turbulent time.

I would place a 100 pound bet that you have been funding your DD in the UK, rent and all that and that her job has been pocket money.

I said it was great for your daughter and genuinely impressive that she got a job that quickly.

Do you think the employees in India are earning the equivalent of the British minimum wage ?

nope and thats why companies use them,

Goatsarebest · 28/06/2026 01:40

You might be correct. But is there a situation where rudeness is justified. It's definitely a quandary that Mumsnet might be able to sort for us.

AurielleBaies · 28/06/2026 01:09

Makes me sick. The people at the top fully taking advantage of the cheap labour and making it impossible for graduates.

The blame needs to be on the greedy billionaires who want the most output for the least money possible. It’s only getting worse

thats the issue with capitalism, and why nmw was created to begin with aparently

I'm not sure what you mean. It's a career like any other, go to college or uni and find a job.

RealOliveTraybake · 28/06/2026 01:42

The issue is that lots of graduates have done the ‘right’ thing by going to college, uni etc and guess what? There is still no career because the market is too oversaturated with graduates because WAY more people are going to uni now than ever before and not enough jobs.

To be fair tech consulting is your KPMG, Deloitte etc etc all of whom used to take on hundreds of graduates every year and have now offshored those positions to India and are in the process of replacing even those jobs with AI. And yet the Labour Government are still keen to announce new schemes for immigrants whilst ignoring the fact that young people are finding it hard to find jobs - why would they do that? Follow the money, the billions the government are pouring into AI is being headed up by Ewan Blair.

It’s very niche so trying not to be outing but office work basically, a mix of admin, call centre type bits
30k salary, 8-4, no weekends or shifts

Also notice this in London. Restaurant staff and bar staff, in many cases all of them are Indian. A real marked increase.

Also in London and have noticed the same. What surprised me more was visiting my parents town up North, I noticed a big change in hospitality staff demographics -now mostly Indian.

I was recently on holiday in Germany and had visited two McDonald’s, customers were white but all staff were Indian at both places

before anyone accuses me of racism I’m British Asian and simply stating my own experiences. I have definitely noticed a difference in past few years with significant increase in Indian hospitality workers

On Reddit work forums people claim when Indians join workplace they will then only hire their own. It feels bit unfair to say, but perhaps there is some truth in it.

I work for a large corporate company (British company too) and the IT department has a very large portion of Indian workers. We of course have other nationalities working here but no other group is overrepresented

MaidOfSteel · 28/06/2026 02:27

Im told that the organisation which provides the home care for my sister, presumably subcontracted by the council, recruits exclusively in Africa. If similar companies are all doing the same, could that be why there appear to be so few jobs advertised, even though it’s said we’re crying out for carers?

Oh I’m surprised that you have candidates pulling these stunts then.
