Now. I want to start by asking you to be objective. I am not trolling. I am 44 and well educated. I am disabled with a serious, chronic illness on holiday in France during what appears to be some of the hottest weather Europe has ever seen. I admit I am already personally upset by what must be something of a pattern since - it has recurred so frequently in my life over the past few years that it mathematically must be one. That is: Gen Z point blank refusing service that used to be standard, normal or just plain basic. In jobs they're being paid for - often paid more than all the threads citing excuses for them admit. Often whilst simultaneously displaying low/ no empathy no matter how serious the issue may be (for example, the health and safety of a disabled person whilst travelling in dangerous conditions). Before everyone piles on about ageism I want to state: obviously it isn't every single Gen Z. Many have been nicely brought up and presumably some have decent managers who are moulding them carefully. But!!! And this is a big but!! This holiday I have had a bellyful. And it echoes similar interactions I experience frequently at home in UK in myriad contexts. And I just dearly wish to put it out there that as a society I think we are "humouring" young people to such a wild extent that we are going to have a hard time getting anything back that vaguely resemble the courtesies and responsibility taking of past generations. A lot of us are thinking and experiencing it. Yet on Mumsnet people always pile on and deny it (one assumes cos people on here are/have been raising them). I want to tell you what Gen Z have done so far to ruin my holiday and place me in danger and it all revolves around the same phrase, "I an unable to do that for you. You can do that yourself/ your mobile phone can do that for you". Delivered with zero empathy. With no Manager or co-worker attempting to correct them even if witnessed. Are you ready for my outlining of Gen Z non-service during a dangerous red flag weather event? Surely if this does not prove how vile we are enabling many of them to be nothing will...?
