Is it acceptable to travel in shorts and sandals?

Help! The friend group is split on this one and it is largely tongue in cheek

We’re off on a girls holiday soon. Half the group thinks it’s fine to travel in shorts and sandals (Birkenstocks), the other half thinks you need to look put together in the airport and dress in a nice outfit (linen, silk trousers etc), in case of an upgrade. They think the nicer you’re dressed the less likely you are to be asked to check your bag at the gate etc.

So, is it acceptable?! They’re not tiny shorts that show my bum cheeks!

Where are you travelling to? Tgat us key to what you wear.

hamse · Yesterday 11:59

It doesn't make any difference what you wear.
I've been upgraded twice. Once by an airline where I was part of the loyalty scheme, long time ago now.
And once last year, not part of the loyalty scheme but at the gate they upgraded me and said it was because they wanted to sit a late checking in family together.
Both times I was in my usual scruffy hiking stuff about to start a long-distance hike.

As airline staff I can confirm they won't be looking for big groups of linen wearers to give out free upgrades. If they need to upgrade anyone (if they have oversold economy for instance but have seats available in a higher cabin) there is a set procedure. After airline staff on upgrade eligible tickets it would be frequent flyers in their loyalty scheme. Therefore wear what you want.

I once had a debate with my husband about being upgrading. He and I both have dietary requirements that we declare beforehand. I said ruefully when about to go long-haul 'We have lost our chance to be upgraded then' and he said he felt sure that having a special meal did not eman we would not be upgraded, but that our ordered meal might be delivered to us in Business. I feel sure that's just way too much faff for the airline tbh!

In any case, when we travel we wear comfortable clothes- jersey harem pants and long sleeved tshirts for me. But that's mainly because we go to Australia or New Zealand and it has to get us through.

I always dress for cooler weather, regardless, because 1) planes are cold and 2) you need something for coming back to the chilly UK.
I do think sandals are inappropriate..... I don't want to see other people's feet on a plane, plus a grubby airport is not a place where I want to expose my feet.
And I'm old, so I don't wear shorts in public (only on a beach, or by a hotel pool, and even that is pushing it 😂).
Long floaty trousers are much more elegant, and equally cool
But the answer to the OP's question is that everyone can dress however they like - why do they all have to look the same?

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · Yesterday 12:01

Tbh when I fly I’m just freaking out about the plane going down so I just wear whatever is going to make me sweat the least.

Mykonos is pretty swish where what you like, but I think everyone on plane will be wearing all white outfits proper linen

Oh no, no, no 😆You couldn't be more wrong. I regularly travel via Mykonos and that image that you have is way off track! It HAD a reputation for being a chic & glam destination but truly lost that way before 2020. These days it's mostly overpriced, overcrowded & awash with Love Island wannabes taking endless selfies🙄

OP wear whatever you feel comfortable in for your flight. There is no special "dress code" for Mykonos flights and as others have pointed out, an upgrade is extremely unlikely and will not be influenced by your outfits. Nor are you more or less likely to be requested to put your carry on in the hold. BTW, if you did put your bags in the hold, Mykonos Airport is very small and it takes very little time to retrieve your luggage on arrival. The longest wait is usually for passport control. In my experience, people generally dress for comfort - often loose fitting trousers or shorts with t-shirts. I often wear Birkenstocks for travel because they're comfy & easy to slip on & off if required in security.

Tamtim · Yesterday 12:03

Personally I always wear enclosed shoes and socks when flying. I don’t know why, but it feels a bit gross to wear flip flops/sandals.

Friendlygingercat · Yesterday 12:04

I would say wear whatever is comfortable to travel in and is suitable for your destination. I travelled solo to some mid eastern countries including Iran so I followed the dress code.I would not want to arrive in a Moslem country wearing shorts and a skimpy top. Long. loose and coverup.

AbzMoz · Yesterday 12:05

I opt for loose palazzo-type pants which are v comfy but look put together enough. I HATE the texture of BA’s faux leather seats (and the thought of other bums on it) so shorts would be an absolute no.

btw - as a group there is next to no chance of upgrade - as a single or couple perhaps.

Shinyandnew1 · Yesterday 12:05

Silk trousers?! I have never even owned them 😂. I look crap in shorts as well to be honest and don’t own any of those either! Nothing wrong with Birkenstocks though!

A grubby airport is your line?… but you would wear sandals in the street where dog literally pee? 🙄

I’m sure BA will happily take their money if they want to pay for an upgrade. On short haul routes they’ll just move the Club curtain back another row! It’s not exactly a game changer in terms of experience

Yeah, all you get is better food and the middle seat is kept empty. Really not worth it at all, especially in a group.

I think the man-made fibres advice is mainly applicable to the light aircraft/small aircraft world but even in the airline enviroment it's not utterly daft advice

There's a problem here in that the airline industry pushes how safe scheduled airline flying is, which it really really is, and so any safety advice at all tends to get blown off...When I was working it was hard enough to get some people to listen to the safety briefing.

I doubt many are going to take advice on choice of fibres based on safety grounds but having known and talked to a handful of people (crew) who have been evolved in Evacs I,'d still recommend not flying in anything that isn't going to stay attached to the feet....

Edited

The very very slight risk of having to evacuate a plane is why i always wear a bumbag on the plane, so if it happens I'll at least have our passports and my inhaler with me. And trainers because I'd hate to walk a lot in anything else anyway.

Lararoft · Yesterday 12:09

I’ve been to Mykonos twice & it’s hot hot hot!!
The airport is tiny & when I last went there were only 2 taxis on the rank for over 100 people queuing in the bright sunshine! I actually got sunburnt waiting.
So wear whatever you will feel coolest (temperature wise) in. I generally don’t wear shorts on a plane as I think the seats can be a bit germy.
Btw regarding beach clubs in Mykonos - when you go to a nice beach, most beaches have large areas of sunbeds & umbrellas owned by various beach bars / hotels, where you pay a fee for the sunbeds, may get towels & water included, & there will be a person serving drinks / food that you pay for separately.
Some clubs also have security to keep the beach sellers away (who can be very persistent - I have seen a seller sit on a woman’s sunbed & refuse to move until she made a purchase!). Although I feel sorry for the beach sellers as they are very poor migrants who need to make a living like everyone else, & they walk around all day in the heat making not much.
Don’t necessarily go to the first beach club you see, as the one next to it could be 10 Euros cheaper!
If you are travelling to Mykonos Town from your accommodation you could either get a bus (everyone starts queuing early but when it arrives it’s a free for all) or a taxi - but book well ahead (hopefully the taxi service has improved by now!!).
Mykonos is a really pretty island, I hope you have a great time!

I would wear sandals on a beach, but not in a city....ever. Nothing to do with dogs, but just because they don't feel like city wear.

beigetriangle · Yesterday 12:10

an airline pilot said to me to always travel in clothes/shoes you can run with and garments that don't melt in case of fire.

aCatCalledFawkes · Yesterday 12:10

How are you and your friends? Silk trousers are like something my Mum would wear? I go away with friends, we are all in our 50s and 40s. None of us would dream of wearing linen or silk trousers 😂

You can wear what you want, younger me in my 30's once flew in wedges and a short skirt, I have also returned home in shorts and flips flops. Last year was a dress and trainers in which the trainers got switched for flips flops to go straight to the beach. There is no world in which I would wear harem pants either. 😂

And you took that seriously? I mean, do you approach car journeys in a similar spirit of ‘Better wear a helmet and body armour in case the airbag doesn’t deploy’?

Then why do they make cabin crew dress the way they do?

Comtesse · Yesterday 12:13

Your mates are nuts, dressing up for the airport is not a thing. No one gets an upgrade on Easyjet…..

GreekMountain · Yesterday 12:15

This is like something people used to do 30 years ago 😂 It was nonsense then and it’s nonsense now.

I am trying but failing to see why sandals are inappropriate footwear. Why?

You would lose your mind in Australia, barefoot is acceptable and quite normal.

I see it as an embarrassing 'pick me for an upgrade' dance.

I mean some people enjoy the whole airport and flight experience and like to dress up for it, which is fine if that's what they want.

But if it's not, it's just bloody odd to do it in the vain hope they might get upgraded.

Weeellokthen · Yesterday 12:19

😂

LienekeS · Yesterday 12:19

Hoping for an upgrade is long gone! It happens occasionally but certainly not for a group.
