Calling the police to check on a crying baby

Just had to call the police to check on a new neighbours baby. What would
you have done in this situation?
New neighbours live down our road around 100m away from us and could hear loud very distressed crying for over half an hour.

It sounded like a newborn or young baby crying and so I assumed they’d settle or some attempt to comfort them would be made but the crying stayed at the same level for ther period time. I could also hear raised voices and car doors slamming and I asked my husband if he’d heard it too (he was downstairs) and he said yeah he was worried as well.

Anyway in hoping it was nothing and the little one is fine but it just didn’t sit right and it sounded like no attempt to comfort them was being made at all.

i have no idea who the new neighbours are as it’s quite far from our bit of the road but for it to be that loud from this distance didn’t seem right. I have also had three colicky babies so I do know babies can cry for periods of time but as I said it sounded like no attempt to help them was being made.

Anyway police treating it as a priority case and checking things out. Just wanted to share really as worried.

That just looks like someone mixed up their user name they were using on this thread with an older one. I've seen that happen before.

Only she’d never used it before this thread.

OneUniqueSquid · 28/06/2026 10:55

I did.

Your fight is with the person who mentioned 'genuine cases' not me.

I simply responded to your one line question 'who would have to wait?'

Then why act confused? If you hadn't replied to a question I asked someone else, none of this would have happened. Especially as my "who would have to wait" question was in reply to "people with genuine need" will have to wait.

Yes that's what happened in the other thread and everyone got confused until MNHQ posted that it was the same user who accidently used an old name.

Oh right. How far did you go back?

Jellylasagnafortwo · 28/06/2026 11:01

The police obviously agreed that it was worth checking.

I would rather do too much rather than too little.

You said that "Literally anyone waiting for Police to attend" would have to wait... I merely pointed out that it's up to the Call Handlers to prioritise. Therefore not LITERALLY ANYONE would have to wait.

You didn't 'merely point that out' did you?

You focused on my comparison to someone asking who else would have to wait? as being similar to someone going to A and E with vague symptoms because 'better to be safe than sorry' then asking who else would have to wait?

Then you went on the attack and said the comparison was ridiculous because the situation was the OP was concerned about a childs welfare and not at all comparable to a wait in A and E.

And I said I wasn't comparing the situations, I was comparing the question who would have to wait? as being similar to someone saying that about A and E because they're stretched emergency services so someone is always waiting.

Then you went on to say nobody knows if it was an emergency or not, call handlers assess that and then I said I didn't say it was or wasn't. Nor did I say an

Now you're saying 'I merely pointed out that call handlers decide so not literally anyone would have to wait'. Which wasn't what you said at all.

And id you really want to get into it. the OP said the Police handler said it was a priority case based on the OPs reporting so in this instance, it absolutely would have been taking resources away from other potentially serious incidents requiring Police response. It was midnight. It's not taking officers away from non-urgent work.

But that wasn't your question was it?

Your question was 'who would have to wait?'

Which I thought was a strange question when we're talking about stretched public services when there's always someone else waiting.

If you were talking about being in an empty shop wondering who else would have to wait? It wouldn't have seemed strange.

It's tough when people point out you're wrong after you had a go at them isn't it?

It happened on another thread I was on. You can have a new name every hour on here if you like. All of them from the same account.

You cannot sock puppet in the middle of a thread. People have been banned for that.

Some babies and loud without being abused. We are back in UK on holiday this week.
The C is intense. Our youngst cried at bedtime yesterday. It's not unheard of.

They live far down the road but you can tell from that distance no attempt was being made to comfort the baby?
I know in some rare cases the parent might have fallen ill and no one is looking after the baby. But its been half an hour....you sound a bit busy.

I don’t know. People can have wild imaginations. The WhatsApp group for my estate went nuts earlier in the week after a few houses had visits from plain clothed police officers looking for a missing girl. Even though the police had badges and gave the crime reference number, there were many posters who insisted it was fake, that the badges were bad copies made using AI and that police from a neighbouring borough would not be allowed into ours. One Googled the name of the officers and because there were no results, used that as evidence that it was fake.

Six hours later, people were still going on about it and wanted to call 999…

Luckily someone with common sense called the police force and verified that it was genuine.

So quite often, people don’t just know something isn’t right. They get carried away and encouraged by others.

Some people also don't like to think that anything like that could happen like that could be associated with their neighbours.

It's a status thing. You know. I live a good area with nice people. Never any trouble. I'm better than you.

That’s an accident.

You said people can make name change every hour, which while true, you’re not allowed to start a thread then name change in the middle of it. It’s against talk guidelines.

IndysMamaRex · 28/06/2026 12:48

Personally I’d rather do something & neighbours think I’m a nosey b**ch & be wrong than do nothing & find out there was a missed opportunity & a child suffered

Ok. So what do you think the OP was doing with the new name considering it was clearly her?

It doesn't matter if you name change in the middle of the thread the old name will still be the same on that thread if you are using the same account. The new name will only appear if it's the first time you have posted on a thread.

In light of cases like baby Preston then you absolutely did the right thing, better to check and I wouldn’t want to go knocking on the door of strangers asking about their baby, especially if you heard raised voices, you never know what you might walk into.
