AIBU to think neighbours should not be naked in their garden?

For context: Our house is on a new build estate and the houses are pretty close together. It’s fairly easy to see into neighbours gardens because the trees etc are not well established yet.

AIBU to say my neighbours shouldn’t be naked in their garden. They are often out in the garden totally naked taking photos of themselves. They have parties quite often and it’s not uncommon for them and friends to be out in the garden naked / using the hot tub etc.

Am I being a killjoy ? Seems excessive to me.

You’re a period property person OP stuck in a new build. The walls in our semi are Victorian. No sound has ever permeated them. It’s very cool inside in summer too.

it’s expensive to live here, so everyone is a bit up themselves. No one smokes or vapes, plays music or swears in the garden. Were way too posh for that sort of thing. I’ve not smelt a bonfire here ever, or a BBQ, the latter being a bit odd. Kids play but no one screeches, and footballs are kicked around in the nearby park not gardens.

Mortgage yourself to the hilt and get a posher place OP! It’s bliss!

Allonthesametrain · 26/06/2026 18:58

I wouldn't care, personally I wouldn't do it because of all of the insects crawling around!

It's like nudist beaches, gave them a try just for the experience but ugh all the sand and risk of jellyfish stinging you without a bit of protection.

Stop looking.

Oh this sort of response is so stupid. Is the OP supposed to walk around with her eyes closed? Keep all the blinds down? Never go in her garden?

I wonder if you would tell a victim of flashing to 'stop looking'.

Surroundedbyfools · 26/06/2026 19:03

Bit odd yeah but it is their property so I’d suggest not looking into their garden. Different story if they are striding around the streets naked

MCF86 · 26/06/2026 19:05

If this post had been "AIBU for being naked in my garden where children can see me" the answers would all be telling them they are flashers and need to put privacy measure in place.

mummyflumms · 26/06/2026 19:08

I studied law decades ago but distinctly remember some case law basically saying if you are naked in your own garden and you know for a fact your neighbour can see you, and they are known to look out of their own windows (ie they can’t make an excuse saying you guys never look out of your own windows so they didn’t know you might spy them starkers) then they are 100% in the wrong and you do have legal recourse against them.
All these years since I made sure I was never naked on or in my own property if there was even a chance that neighbours might accidentally see me, because I was convinced I’d be breaking the law if they did and they could report me. I tried googling it and “Tate Gallery” case law came up that might apply in your situation.

So essentially yes OP, the fact they have naked parties and are fully aware that their garden is overlooked by other houses simply isn’t on, and I’m a little shocked that the majority of replies here are telling you to mind your own business. Perhaps new laws came out since as we’ve become a far less prudish society than in the past, but I’m pretty sure it’s just that people today don’t realise their rights. Courts take into account the consequences of their rulings, and they want to protect people from neighbours who would deliberately flash them and hide behind “it’s my private property so I’m not doing anything wrong”

This is incorrect. Think about it. If it was correct how come you can have naked bike rides in London then, naked ramblers. All legally acceptable

it is because there is no law against public nudity in the uk. It is only illegal if it is done to cause alarm, distress or for sexual gratification. If you’re just naked and going about your business it is not illegal.

i think you misunderstood all those years ago.

I moved to the country . 50k cheaper but a drive to local shop and further drive to the supermarket.. but the upside is that I can swan around in my bikini or nothing if I please , getting drunk , talking loudly, whilst chain smoking and sniffing lines off the naked buttocks of Sven the mobile masseur. Try it OP . It’s the only way to live . 71 and enjoying life without the judgmental pearl clutching neighbours.. although a fair few come along to join the merriment. You would be shocked if you lived in the country with a long lens 😂

So that's where Sven has been. Hadn't seen him in a while...

Does someone else have to be there for it to be considered illegal? Looking at my naked body in the mirror quite often causes me alarm and distress!

You best have a firm word with your self or you might have to call the police on yourself for deliberately causing yourself alarm and distress 😅

I'm a bit worried I might be called as a witness, and what the evidence might look like! 😂

Clothes are actually very useful/practical, it turns out. I don't really undestand naturists for this reason; who would cook naked, fix a car, or do sport in the nud? It'd be stupid. Clothes protect us and they keep stuff in place and keep us comfortable 😉

Anyway, if we were all naked they'd have to invent anti-macassars for our bums 🤢

Sennelier1 · 26/06/2026 19:35

Well, nowadays I have young grandchildren. I would prefer for them not being introduced to nakedness by watching the neighbours frollicking in their (own) garden. But then I guess it would be up to me to not let said grandchildren see this happening? If needed I will keep the children away from any stairs or ladders to avoid being confronted by dicks and/or boobies.

BaronessBomburst · 25/06/2026 20:10

Chuck your car keys in the bowl and join in.

Simple nudity does not equate to sex.

Myli1 · 26/06/2026 19:39

Of course you are being unreasonable. It’s just a human body for goodness sake, we’ve all got one! In this weather the first thing I do after enduring a day at work having to wear a hot and sticky uniform is strip off and sit in the garden as soon as I get home.

FunCrab · 26/06/2026 18:31

Seems the perfect solution in this heatwave.
Has OP told the neighbour they should probably have factor 50 on.
can you imagine the discomfort of getting sunburn on sensitive bits. Does not bear thinking about.
And perhaps advise them to wear a hat.

A hat on which bit? 🥸

Beeloux · 26/06/2026 19:42

Your neighbours are being weird as fuck.

Pretty sure most PP wouldn’t be happy with their children being able to see naked men and woman walking around.

Bikini/shorts fine. Totally naked, yanbu.

AnonymityAnonymity · 25/06/2026 20:36

Another thread where posters on MN seem to inhabit a different world to the real one. It beggars belief that so many seem to think OP should be blasé about her neighbours cavirting about with theur friends naked in the garden.

Personally OP I"d be reporting them to the police and the police can decide whether they are actually committing a criminal offence. Or at least have words with them about consideration for others

And you’d very likely be charged with wasting police time. Simple nudity in public is perfectly legal, providing there is no deliberate attempt to cause alarm, distress or harassment.

Myli1 · 26/06/2026 19:46

NormasArse · 25/06/2026 20:46

Hang on- if someone stood at their window naked, they’d get into trouble for exposing themselves- how is this different??

Because in legal terms there is a big difference between exposing oneself in a sexual context with the intention of causing alarm, harassment or distress, and simply going about your normal business without clothes.

Myli1 · 26/06/2026 19:50

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 25/06/2026 20:52

What is OP supposed to do walk around her house shielding her gaze so she doesn’t actually look out of her own windows. Plus children-her DS already thinks it’s hilarious and will be telling everyone. I’d just pop a note saying please wear clothing when you are outside. A number of neighbours are being made to feel uncomfortable and it is inappropriate with children around. At the end of the day, it’s flashing and illegal.

It isn’t flashing and it isn’t illegal. Simple nudity in the absence of any sexual context is perfectly legal, providing no deliberate attempt to cause alarm, harassment or distress is being made.
