AIBU to think neighbours should not be naked in their garden?

For context: Our house is on a new build estate and the houses are pretty close together. It’s fairly easy to see into neighbours gardens because the trees etc are not well established yet.

AIBU to say my neighbours shouldn’t be naked in their garden. They are often out in the garden totally naked taking photos of themselves. They have parties quite often and it’s not uncommon for them and friends to be out in the garden naked / using the hot tub etc.

Am I being a killjoy ? Seems excessive to me.

Sitting in their hot tub naked is pretty normal, having parties with lots of naked people or walking about naked more generally is odd to me but it’s in their garden so up to them

It’s not normal sitting a hot tub naked. Most people wear bikinis, swimming costumes or shorts. I know people that have them and they don’t go in naked.

I had a similar experience to this quite a few years ago. I was at my late DM's house,it was summer and pretty warm. I went upstairs to use the bathroom, and my DM has opened the bathroom window quite wide. As I was washing my hands,I was absent mindedly looking out of the open windows when my gaze fell upon my DM's pretty straight-laced,50 something next door neighbours. Stark bollock naked in their back garden. At that exact moment, they spotted me and moved pretty quickly back into their house. I think they forgot, that even though they lived in a bungalow,my DM lived in a house, which meant, from the upstairs,a birds eye view of their back garden! I told my DD who thought it was hilarious, but I never said a word to my DM as I knew she'd start stressing over it (the woman next door used to cut my DM's hair regularly) and probably make out it was MY fault somehow! To this day I'm still so surprised that they indulged in stark naked sunbathing as they were so prim and proper!

Soberinthecity · 26/06/2026 16:59

Yeah you definitely live Nextdoor to sex folk. It’s harmless fun - as long as they’re not harming anyone or making too much noise and it’s all consensual, whats the issue? We’ve all seen naked bodies before.

Jobie19 · 26/06/2026 17:04

It’s only illegal if it’s causing you distress.. so if it is call the PoPo.. only time they can get away with it is if they are completely out of sight from public or neighbours 🤪

Ariana12 · 26/06/2026 17:11

I'm with the group who thinks this is not on. They can clearly be seen by their neighbours and are causing a level of distress. This is not only un-neighbourghly, it is also potentially unlawful. So no you dont have to put up with it OP. The difficulty is how you approach telling them. Do you feel up to just telling them straight? "We can see you. We can see your friends. It's distressing. Our gardens are not ( currently) private enough for you to do this."

Kubuli · 26/06/2026 17:14

It is their garden and their home, they can do as they please.

Don't look.

They are nude in their own surroundings, they aren't having sex in the garden for all to see.

Partner and I are naturists (which I assume these guys are, especially if they + their friends are nude too when they come over). When I had a garden, I sat in my garden nude in weather like this. Now we are in an apartment so alas not.

Not only is it becoming increasingly common but beaches are readily accessible to the public. Sun Clubs and other establishments are run of the mill properties with neighbours who can potentially overlook. Generally it is a bit of a chore for you to be able to see in/see out so if you can see anything of note, you're giving it a good go.

As a naturist myself, I would say go and talk to them. Not saying strip off and join them but you know... they might be able to chat more about naturism/why they do it/ heads up if they have guests coming (not that there's an expectation to fyi).

Dolphin78 · 26/06/2026 17:15

Are they decent neighbours in all other ways? Would they help you out in a difficulty? I think just “Let them” if you couldn’t see them you wouldn’t think twice about them having a laugh with their friends. Think of it this way.. you have some pretty good stories to tell and can dine out on this for years!

Did I miss something are they having wild orgies in their garden or just doing things that nobody would object to if they were fully clothed?

Just for context I’m am a witness in a court case where a man indecently exposed himself to me on a beach. This is wildly different situation which was reported to the police who took it VERY seriously.

NeverLookInTheMirror · 26/06/2026 17:16

Actually I think it is illegal for children to see you having sex.

Obviously if they walk in on you accidentally then that’s one thing, but if you’re having sex in a publicly visible area where you know that children can see in you absolutely could be prosecuted.

It’s considered to be child abuse.

When i saw the title of this thread, for a second i thought i might be the naked neighbour. I was out in my garden at about 7am this morning checking my strawberries, fresh from the shower.

So obviously i think it's fine to be in your own garden naked. I would draw the line at naked parties if they are noisy or engaging in "bedroom stuff" or filming onlyfans. But just being naked and doing normal stuff shouldn't be bothering you.

I got a bit paranoid as well, 11:30 last night the breeze was beautiful 😂 but no one is over looking our garden…

One thing that surprised me is that walking around in the nude is not immediately a crime.
I understand that it is a difficult situation but as it is in private I do believe people should have freedom within reason to do eccentric behaviours.

When I was in Berlin in the old East in the main square a man around sixty passed completely nude and not one person reacted.
It was a hot sunny day and nobody was bothered.
I then found out that in East Germany before the wall came down there was a huge naturist movement. In fact naturism was the orthodoxy.

There is a party planned for this evening.

I know this because one of the other neighbours has become friends with the guys on Facebook.

Obviously I’ll be on some covert mission to ensure I have an ideal view point. Might even get myself some snacks and beverages whilst peering through the window like some weird pervert. Could ask a few people round. Make an evening of it.

They have a garden bar called “The Dirty Dick”.

Should be a fun evening !

😆😆😆😆

Is the problem that they are homosexuals?

TreacleMoon · 26/06/2026 17:25

Two perspectives here:
It's almost admirable to not give a hoot about what others think but it's a bit naive (or ignorant) on their part to lack any consideration that not everyone feels comfortable with willies and boobs flying around outside a child's bedroom window!

However, maybe swap bedrooms with your son, and start having parties with your friends, to watch the entertainment.. You'll probably get a invite at some point but whatever you do don't accept, it could scar your son for life!

("They're sex people" is my favourite response ever!)

Mudflaps · 26/06/2026 17:27

Years ago in the 80's we had neighbours who were swingers, they'd a beautiful big house in the countryside, perfectly private for parties but they drank in the local pub and a few locals who weren't aware of their preferences got a shock after accepting a party invite. Absolutely lovely people who were great neighbours.

And how many women (in Germany or elsewhere) do this?

Chilihealer · 26/06/2026 17:33

Do us a favour op go comment on that thread of the woman that wants allocated time slots with her neighbours cos she can’t cope with their conversation, vaping and frolicking in bikinis😂

iluvlucy · 26/06/2026 17:34

I moved to the country . 50k cheaper but a drive to local shop and further drive to the supermarket.. but the upside is that I can swan around in my bikini or nothing if I please , getting drunk , talking loudly, whilst chain smoking and sniffing lines off the naked buttocks of Sven the mobile masseur. Try it OP . It’s the only way to live . 71 and enjoying life without the judgmental pearl clutching neighbours.. although a fair few come along to join the merriment. You would be shocked if you lived in the country with a long lens 😂

Sounds great tbh.

I hate estate life. I don’t know how I got talked into it.

I’ve actually decided I don’t give a fuck about the naked shenanigans now. Least it’s a bit of merriment while I’m living in a box !

Wish I had the balls (lol) to go naked in my garden

AJLOAL · 26/06/2026 17:47

You are being unreasonable. What people do in the privacy of their own garden is none of your business.

Sassylovesbooks · 26/06/2026 17:48

Perhaps they are naturalists?! They clearly aren't bothered that they may been seen by others, either comfortable being naked or possibly exhibitionists!! If they were bothered, they'd have bought a more secluded home!

The naked parties in the hot tub, again could be like minded naturalists or they could be swingers.

They're in their own garden, there's not much you can do. If your son is young, then play the nakedness down to him.

Obviously if the parties turn into loud, noisy orgies, then that's a whole different story.

I'm looking at David Attenborough in a whole new light now, national treasure that he is.
