AIBU to think neighbours should not be naked in their garden?

For context: Our house is on a new build estate and the houses are pretty close together. It’s fairly easy to see into neighbours gardens because the trees etc are not well established yet.

AIBU to say my neighbours shouldn’t be naked in their garden. They are often out in the garden totally naked taking photos of themselves. They have parties quite often and it’s not uncommon for them and friends to be out in the garden naked / using the hot tub etc.

Am I being a killjoy ? Seems excessive to me.

I kind of love your concession of wearing flip flops.

I love the emergency kaftan.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 26/06/2026 02:08

Everyone should have an emergency kaftan.

LivingTheDreamish · 26/06/2026 02:25

Honestly call the police non-emergency line and have a word. Being naked in public (which includes a garden where people can see you) is hopefully still an offence and they can have a word. The neighbours don't need to know it was you that complained.

Peoplearebloodyidiots · 26/06/2026 02:48

Yes you are being a killjoy and a prude

OP, don't look in their garden and you won't be offended and they will treat you with similar respect. Teach your son this too. I can't imagine he is too interested. People should be able to wear what they like in their gardens. If you don't like it, don't look.

I can't imagine he is too interested.

I’d imagine a boy of any age to be fairly interested

You want to police people and their clothing.

Somehow you seem to think that the line you draw is the "correct line"

I'm showing you that it's a continuum, from total body covering, to full nudity.

Somewhere on that line are other situations that you find acceptable yet others do not. If we adopted their "correct line" then women would be oppressed about their permitted clothing.

Dont know why you think a warning about a slippery slope is somehow misogynistic - or is it just a slur in place of thinking about the issue?

Tbh I'd prefer people's clothes did cover their bits, yes. Sick of seeing women's labia in those stupid shorts just now, for instance.

How do you know it's not a crime?

The law on nudity in public is not black and white. It very much is dependent on intentions of those being nude in public and also the effect it has on the people who see the nudity.

OP has every right to report this to the police and they ars the ones who will decide whether in this case it is a crime. I think at the very least the police who have words with these exhibitionists about being more discreet with their behaviour!

As I said in my post, I know people who go naked in their garden. Someone complained, the police visited and there was nothing they could do. I'm not saying it's OK and I wouldn't be happy with it myself 's just what happened.

WolfinSheepsDress · 26/06/2026 07:47

Op I feel your pain im just imaging my neighbours cavorting around naked 😲no thanks .

They /you need to grow trees to stop this

JohnofWessex · 26/06/2026 07:57

I wonder what Tom & Margo would have made of it?

Being naked in public isn’t and has never been illegal.

PinkPonyAnonymous · 26/06/2026 08:01

hope they are adequately SPF’d.

ChaToilLeam · 26/06/2026 08:03

Unless your garden is completely secluded, wear some clothes. They sound like exhibitionists.

GingerBeverage · 26/06/2026 08:11

Who exactly is the driving force behind normalising nudity? Is it women, or men?

Is it a male interest, or a female one? Because wanting a tan without strap lines is a very different goal to everyone accepting having to see your genitals.

Who runs British Naturism, for example. Is it women?

mylifeisexams · 26/06/2026 08:27

I’m quite surprised at these reactions. I think it’s a bit off when kids can see them. They sound like exhibitionists. Really weird. I’d be having a word.

Have you met any 11 yo boys? 😂

HortiGal · 26/06/2026 08:37

@Sherararara it can be a crime if causing alarm, OP can report this, all these posters saying stop being a prude etc, would they really be comfortable with a neighbour behaving like this in a garden in full view, I doubt it

As I said. Being naked in public is not against the law.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/06/2026 08:43

What I want to know is do they swan, or parade? Those are things one can only do naked.

OP yanbu

I read what you said about the people you know.
But my point is the law in the matter of nudity is not a " one size fits all" one and just because the police didn't see what was happening in the instance you cite wasn't a crime doesnt mean to say it won't be seen as a crime in the case of OP's neighbours.

I genuinely can't tell if it's supposed to be tongue in cheek or not

🤣🤣🤣

I’m not convinced all these threads about neighbours being naked / ‘prancing in bikinis’ in their gardens which ‘can be seen if you look out of the upstairs bedroom windows’ on new build housing estates are genuine. This is the second one this morning. It’s like people have all been watching 70s sex comedies starring Robin Askwith.

Daftypants · 26/06/2026 09:57

They can do what they like inside their house but in the garden 🪴.?
they must know full well well that neighbours can see them without staring or peeping through the bushes .
You want to do that then you need live out in the sticks with no neighbours .
They’re weird .

Yeah I’m not sure either, although to be fair we had a neighbour who was a naturist, lovely man, bit eccentric, drove past his house one day and he was strimming the borders completely starkers, we thought ouch. 😂

his house isn’t over looked, and sits on a large detached plot. just you could see if you drove past and happened to look, we also saw him doing naked yoga in his living room once, again on driving past, for me each to their own, and he wasn’t visible from our home. If it was I guess at some point I’d get annoyed as I don’t feel it’s reasonable to tell people they shouldn’t ever look out their windows, especially if you’ve kids, I certainly wouldn’t want my young daughter or son banned from looking out their windows as billy and Jane have got their bits out,

I guess it tallies with the heatwave but I must admit, it's one of those topics that crops up on MN every so often but I've yet to encounter anyone who's had this issue IRL.

I'm really in two minds about this. There's a part of me that wants to be all live and let live, body positive (especially in front of my children) and say it's up to people what they do in their own garden.

But on the other hand I can see right into my neighbours gardens from my upstairs window and I would admittedly find it a bit disturbing if I opened the curtains one day to find Richard next door lazing on a sun lounger with his willy out.

Wingingit73 · 26/06/2026 10:26

My neighbours are naked again. I can see them when im staring through the trees
