Is my DH BU about Pride bunting

MotherOfSoManyCats · Today 14:15

My 25 yr old non-binary child (who lives at home) has just had their Pride bunting delivered for Pride Month. We currently have England bunting up in the window for the football.

While happily talking about their new flags and putting them in the window with said England flags, my DH has commented that they will need to be taken down every night because "you know what the stupid wankers around here are like" - thinking that we will get our home vandalised!!

We live in a normal town in the SE and, although not as colourful as somewhere such as Brighton, I've not heard of any homophobic violence.

Is HE BU to think this should happen? I personally think a few colourful flags will be fine, plus it'll be dark! For context, our front window is very close to the path but not on a main road.

Sorry, not done a voting post before!
YES you AIBU as your home may be vandalised
NO you are NOT AIBU and should leave the flags up overnight

I think it’d be fine. Unless you’re somewhere with a propensity for vandalism. I live in a ‘normal’ area - neither particularly well off or poor, mix of people - there’s a house who have several pride flags in their windows all year round and have never been vandalised.

Arlanymor · Today 14:19

Seems an overreaction - people put political signs up in their windows and gardens and manage not to get vandalised. Plus there’s only five days left of the month so they won’t be up for long anyway.

PattyBladelll · Today 14:21

One of my local towns is currently in the news because a load of pride flags and bunting have been ripped and a council flag pole was damaged, so it looks like it can happen. Not sure whether people would target homes though, these were businesses

SunnySunnyDayz · Today 14:22

Is it normal rainbow pride bunting or the progress pride flag which is considered political?

I really can't imagine anyone vandalising a house due to bunting.

Do you live in an area where people tend to vandalise other people's property? If not, then I would imagine that your flags will be left alone, just as the England football ones have been left alone.

Political party flags and signs are all over people's houses when there are elections and don't often result in vandalism.

I find it even more tiresome when adult men feel the need to announce their football team to the neighbourhood!

As an English person I’d never festoon my house with naff St George’s cross bunting.

Well done for supporting your child. They will remember that

SooPanda · Today 14:36

OP I find it hypocritical of your DH to put his little England flags up, and then make a fuss about the pride flags. I don’t expect it’s about the neighbourhood / risk of vandalism really. Proud to be English and fly that flag he relates to but not proud to fly the flag his child relates to.

Clarkeytin · Today 14:36

He’s probably embarrassed and trying to get rid of it without causing a rift. I’d do the same. Mega cringe.

Happyjoe · Today 14:37

Husband is worrying over nothing and if you live in a neighbourhood that only supports seeing the England flag, move.

Support your child! :-)

I agree, miles worse, esp these days. I also will never feel the urge to go draw a wonky cross on a roundabout.

Have a day off

Why, pretty much all my gay friends are utterly sick of what pride has become in recent years and want nothing to with it and the current seizure inducing flag.

So? Whats that got to do with what the OP was asking. She didn’t ask for opinions on pride or what you and your friends think.

They’re not announcing anything about their sexuality.
What they are announcing depends on which flag they’ve chosen for their bunting. If it’s the original rainbow, then they are announcing their solidarity with LGB people. But according to the OP, their adult dc wants people to pretend that they are a special type of human, neither female nor male. So they have probably chosen the so-called ‘Progress’ flag, the one with the invasive wedge, in which case they are announcing their support for an ideology that denies you the right to choose to only have sex with fellow women.

Is the person you are berating flying flags in her window?

or are you using a spurious parallel to express your intolerance ?

For the same reason people like to publicise the political party they vote for or the football team they support. Or why someone might wear a t-shirt with the name of a band they like. I don't do any of these things but I don't find it difficult to imagine why someone might like to do it.
