To be fed up of hearing 'just get on with it'?

This kind of 'just get on with it' RE the heat is all over Facebook. People talking about the heat in 1976 and saying 'we just got on with it' or 'we muddled through' (as if people didn't die as a result of that heatwave)

My issue is - shouldn't we as a society be aiming higher than just getting on with things and muddling through? We should be campaigning for better infrastructure, better working practices.

I just think we have all this technology, we're supposed to be a rich country, let's fight to make things better rather than just managing. What happened to the spirit of the first union workers who demanded better conditions and rights? I want to see that spirit back.

@glitterpaperchain We should be campaigning for better infrastructure, better working practices.

And also, smaller families and people to drive normal cars instead of stupid-looking SUVs.

And under "better infrastructure," that includes 5 minute or 15 minute cities.

For a few days every half century, I think that we should just get on with it rather than spaff hundreds of billions adapting infrastructure and working practices.

If you think this is 'a few days every half century' you've got your head in the sand. This is going to become a very regular occurrence.

Just been chatting to my mum about the heat in 76, she said it wasn't as bad as it wasn't as muggy. I don't remember being hot in 76,just endless playing and sunshine.

Yes.

We just got on with it in 1976

You know the typical child's drawing of a car? They look like blody tanks now. It's obscene.

Our infrastructure is mostly privatised, which means profits go to shareholders, rather than back into that service.

It also means we are no longer a rich country because everything got sold off for a fast buck.

Thanks, Tories.

Edited to say that I’ve just spotted a post saying this wouldn’t happen under Thatcher. She was the one who sold it all off! 🤦‍♀️

That was my post. I thought it was obvious I was being sarcastic. I agree with you!

As I said the world was a different place. We got on, things worked, people were kinder.

I have a family member in the hospital at the moment and they’re not even allowed a fan due to blowing germs around. It’s utterly awful for them.

Edited

I was in hospital for two weeks in summer
2022. No fans - they couldn’t afford them for the wards. I was throwing up due to the heat. Horrendous. Hope your relative gets home
soon.

And what was the last week of May then?

It was pretty warm, yeah. Still way under 35 degrees though. Hardly the Sahara desert.

If you remember 1976, you’ll remember the “no blacks, no dogs, no Irish” signs? The rise of the National Front?

Kinder??!!?

The birth rate is already 1.4.

Most advanced countries have low birth rates.

Yes but the NF were outliers, extreme. People didn't want to vote for them in droves as they do now for Reform. The majority of people stayed in their own lane, infrastructure was in place. Railways, Schools, Health, Youth Clubs, Technical colleges, adult education and so on.
There wasn't the greed and envy.

shuggles · 25/06/2026 20:26

There are still localised cases of people having very large families, or men donating sperm to way too many women.

Not sure why you would defend that.

I just remember going to school every day as usual and there being no water in the taps to wash our hands!
the sad bit was fire engines down our road constantly as the woods burnt to a crisp 😢

Ablondiebutagoody · 24/06/2026 17:34

You mentioned 1976. Yes, it's currently hot, but hasn't been this hot for 50 years. Spending a load of money on infrastructure would be an overreaction in my opinion.

I think it's a different kind of heat than people experienced in 1976, and yes I was aive then! It was a drier heat, whereas this current heatwave is so humid and it is the humidity that is so difficult to cope with as it affects the body's ablity to cool itself. And it isn't cooling down at all at night so we can't rest and recover. I am typing this with sweat running dowm my face, bloodshot eyes due to intense hayfever and I would sell my soul for a cleansing thunderstorm

Because I don’t think it’s an advanced country issue and we’re told continuously that we can’t have a low birth rate or life as we know it will end in the UK.

I don’t know how people can talk about the birth rate and not talk about the demographics who are having the larger families nor the fact it’s high immigration adding to the UK.

Ultimately though the UK being constantly built on to accommodate population increase will not help the heat or flooding issues we’re seeing more of. It’s time to be honest that trying to outbuild it will be impossible and cause a lot more environmental issues.

I do agree whole heartedly that giant SUVs annoy the heck out of me on small British roads and car parks. I also think families have too many cars now due to the ease of car finance. But I would then caveat that due to crap public transport a lot of people need a car.

I heard this same thing from older relatives.

They said it was scorching and tarmac melted but it’d start to ease early evening. It was also drier and less of a sickly heat. But at least this is a few days and that was weeks which must’ve been very hard without modern conveniences like air con, freezers, online delivery etc.

This feels like a wet tropical type heat and it’s awful.

😂😂 MN can be such a ridiculous place

"We have a pretty low birth rate"
"But SOME MEN donate SPERM to WAY TOO MANY women HOW CAN YOU DEFEND THAT???"

@MightyDandelionEsq she's got you there 😅

I'm old enough to remember the heat wave of May 2026, we just got on with it in those days.

MrDobbs · 25/06/2026 20:58

The vast majority of offices I have worked in over the past 30 years have had air conditioning. It's just normal. I know that isn't the case in every office, but it is pretty widespread.

I don't understand why people begrudge small children having the same amenity in a classroom. I understand it costs money, retrofitting to old buildings is complex, sometimes impractical and not easy to fund given other funding pressures etc, and these are all valid things to be considered.

But some people seem to have the attitude that we shouldn't even aspire to it and it is a sign of moral turpitude to even mention such a thing.

You've aged well. what is your secret please?

FFSItsTooHot · 25/06/2026 21:05

I've been told I'm over-reacting to 'a bit of warm weather'. I have got a medical condition that makes me more sensitive to heat plus I take 3 different medications that make me feel the heat more and one of them blunts my sense of thirst, which is not a good thing in very hot weather! To quote a cliché 'We can put a man on the moon.....' but even with all the amazing technology we have nowadays,it seems to be beyond the abilities of the powers that be to help people who really ARE suffering in the extreme heat.

We aren't a rich country. The country is on its knees and giving handouts to illegal immigrants etc. Don't even get me started.

Yes, but you need to read to the end of the sentence. That's the hottest day in June.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_weather_records
5 of the ten hottest days on record have been this decade. They were all above 36.7, hotter than any day in 1976. All but one of the hottest ten days have been since 2000.

Global warming is making temperature hotter, and fast.

I have read the sentence. I was pointing out that these are the hottest temperatures in circa 50 years. I remember 1976 and the heatwave was prolonged - for months. I remember sunbathing at the beginning of October. What we’re experiencing now is hotter but it doesn’t last nearly as long. Thankfully.

Darragon · 24/06/2026 16:51

We’re not a rich country though our tax take doesn’t cover our expenditures. Maybe if we stopped making every minor inconvenience a problem for the government to solve we’d be better off.

We weren’t a rich country after the war, but look what we achieved? All sectors of society pulling together to improve conditions for everyone.
