Do teachers feel nervous about these things too?

We are going into Dd’s class this afternoon to take a cake for her birthday to share. For some reason I feel nervous, is this normal? I feel like most people wouldn’t bother about things like this and would just enjoy the moment.
I feel worried about not having enough of everything, cutting the cake properly…

Do teachers feel as nervous about parents coming into the classroom? And would you be nervous?

Schools don’t really have the time to deal with cake… More importantly, is it completely nut free? Individual bags of Haribo are the norm here.

Its a nice thought but it does make extra effort for the teachers…

Of course we had time to celebrate a child’s birthday in the classroom. It made life less dull. My favourite was the Tesco traybake.

RaraRachael · 24/06/2026 13:25

I've never heard of parents coming into school to do this. Sounds like a bit of a palaver.

If I'd had parents doing this 32 times during the school year I wouldn't have been happy..

Slowdownyouredoingfine · 24/06/2026 13:42

@Aninkling She doesn’t ask whether she should go, she asked if teachers get nervous and evidently some do as they have commented on this thread. Thus, maybe making OP feel more ‘normal’ and less nervous.

if the op had said she hadn’t actually arranged this with the teacher… I’d have said “well yes on your shoes I would be nervous and probs my would give the teacher a heads up!!”

Just read this thread and every comment from start to finish. If I was the OP I would have ducked out on page 1!

Oh you’re being such a PITA mum
School Cba to deal with this
They’re rolling their eyes at you
Just take in sweets and be cool and nonchalant like me
You can’t take a knife into school
All the kids can’t not have allergies

Lighten up you bunch of fun suckers. Fuccckkkkk.

I agree with this! What an awful lot of judgement about nothing very much! That’s MN for you I suppose.

OP I get nervous about things like this too. But I have tended to get nervous generally about all unfamiliar social/practical situations (much improved over the last few years though, and now I often even manage to feel/present as quite self-assured sometimes).

I know MN loves to diagnose and I am NOT diagnosing you, but just for the full picture I am now fairly certain I’m autistic. Obviously much deeper issues too than what Ive mentioned here, but it’s all part of the same thing.

Goinggreymammy · 24/06/2026 14:05

Im a teacher, for longer than I would care to admit. Not UK. Also a parent. I would not be nervous as a teacher, as a parent I would like to have it planned out so I had enough of everything.
It sounds like an awful pain to do this for every birthday though.
My top tip to parents for doing anything with a lot of children is do it quickly, before they lose interest, wander off, start messing etc. Cut the cake quickly, stick a little fork in each piece and use the fork to transfer to plate and hand over straight to child. Don't waste time faffing about with things. Gets messy.
If you have ever been at a party in a busy playcentre... see how quickly the attendants give out the food and cake.

CrispySquid · 24/06/2026 14:27

I would feel nervous at all OP. I think it’s absolutely lovely!

plims · 24/06/2026 14:30

Inconvenienced but not nervous

We are abroad and this seems to be the custom here. It wouldn’t be my plan! Dd asked as everyone does it apparently and yes they sing Happy birthday and I need to bring cups, plates, napkins etc, hence why I’m nervous! It feels like a lot

You should have mentioned this in your OP. It’s very relevant that other countries might have practices in schools that are very normal. But you will get lots of responses from U.K. teachers for whom this is highly unusual.

CeciliaMars · 24/06/2026 14:34

Why would this be done in school? What a huge waste of time and resources.

BreakingBroken · 24/06/2026 14:51

I’m in Canada and cup cakes for everyone in the class wasn’t unusual. Small school with small classes, the school secretary was very helpful.

Blueberries0761 · 24/06/2026 15:21

I hope your dd and the rest of the class enjoy the cake and I hope the event isn't too stressful for you. Let us know how it goes 🎂

We do similar in the U.K. lots of kids bring cake etc. in for their birthdays. It’s the parent spending time in class which is unusual.

The OP’s drip feed has skewed the replies.

Glad its done!

This sounds lush! School seems to suck the fun out of everything by secondary school. My kids primary school is amazing but as of september the youngest will have left 😔
Birthdays are supposed to be celebrated. Pleased it went well OP

I'm so glad it went well and the kids enjoyed themselves, you can relax now!

elliesmummy19 · 24/06/2026 16:08

My daughter’s school allows it and it seems to be done quite often. They just ask that we don’t bring in home made cakes or cakes that need cutting. We take in something like packs of shop bought cupcakes or something like Mini Rolls.

I definitely wouldn’t do it if we weren’t told that it is allowed and common.

Despairsquid11 · 24/06/2026 16:09

Oh gosh you’re bringing back traumatic memories of parents sending in cakes and me having to chop it up into 30 tiny pieces 😂I’d have been thrilled if a parent offered to come in and do it for me!!

Mumstheword1983 · 24/06/2026 16:14

Hi it's always been common to send a cake in on birthdays here (Scotland). They all have a piece at break time. The parents doesn't normally go in though the birthday girl or boy takes it in. Party or not.

Nothing to be nervous about 😁

Skybluepinky · 24/06/2026 16:23

No cake at school due to numerous allergies and certainly parents wouldn’t go into a classroom to cut it, they can’t have any risk assessments in place.

Aninkling · 24/06/2026 16:31

To be fair, I’m not inclined to eat cake baked by a stranger that I have zero idea of their personal and kitchen cleanliness 🤷‍♀️

We can send in cakes but need to individually wrapped . Seems practically sensible it no cutting, not messy and… reassuring

I think it’s so we share the moment with her, other parents have done it before

Share the moment???

JohnnieFedora · 24/06/2026 16:55

We're not allowed to send in anything for birthdays.

Make sit much easier.

Also don't have to deal with allergies!
