Do teachers feel nervous about these things too?

We are going into Dd’s class this afternoon to take a cake for her birthday to share. For some reason I feel nervous, is this normal? I feel like most people wouldn’t bother about things like this and would just enjoy the moment.
I feel worried about not having enough of everything, cutting the cake properly…

Do teachers feel as nervous about parents coming into the classroom? And would you be nervous?

It helps me to know teachers get nervous too as I feel v nervous

Based on this post, I'd say you genuinely have nothing to worry about though! The parents who over-think or show self-awareness are the ones we tend to like and get on with. Easier said than done, though, I know!

Floppyearedlab · 24/06/2026 12:15

Just remember it is their space and you are the invited guest. You do as the teacher says, don't spread yourself out and follow all their instructions.

Aninkling · 24/06/2026 12:16

You have arranged to go in OP?

as for your question… I wouldn t feel nervous about this in the slightest because I have to do a lot of presenting in my work to a much much harder audience that a group of young children about to tuck in to some cake!

have you bought gluten free option out of interest?

We are abroad and this seems to be the custom here. It wouldn’t be my plan! Dd asked as everyone does it apparently and yes they sing Happy birthday and I need to bring cups, plates, napkins etc, hence why I’m nervous! It feels like a lot

How old is your dd?

If it makes you feel better, I was a teacher and got nervous on e.g. open days when parents visited - Would they think I was a rubbish teacher? Would I suddenly forget an important piece of knowledge?

I'm sure the teacher and students will just be so grateful to have cake and something a little out of their usual routine!

I'm a teacher and get nervous before any parent event. Assemblies, Sports Day, Parents Evenings - I bloody dread it! We have parents come in to observe and take part in lessons each term, and it is the bane of my life.

These people saying "No" are clearly more well-adjusted than I am...

Me too!

I’ve sent in cake, sweets and party bags* for my kids’ birthdays before but the teacher/LSAs dole them out I don’t get involved at all beyond that. I can’t say I ever felt nervous about going to school events but I was uncomfortable at the very beginning because I had a horrible time at school myself. Quickly got over it though.

*party bags because my son goes to special school with much smaller classes and when he was younger they would use the kids birthdays as a way to practice their social skills- hosting their friends, taking turns and learning it’s ok to lose at musical statues etc. basically they had a little party. Most of the kids we’ve met at school don’t have actual parties. Still, bet the teachers are relieved the parents aren’t there to “share the moment”.

Jk987 · 24/06/2026 12:42

Schools don’t really have the time to deal with cake… More importantly, is it completely nut free? Individual bags of Haribo are the norm here.

Its a nice thought but it does make extra effort for the teachers…

Right then… so go for it.

You literally couldn’t bet a better audience that a group of 5 year olds about to receive birthday cake!!

I thought that

but this teacher is allowing it

apparently according to the OP’s 5 year old they “all” do it. So that’s 23x!

Ok, possibly not all, but lots as she comes back with party bags fairly regularly and says who brought a cake in

Just read this thread and every comment from start to finish. If I was the OP I would have ducked out on page 1!

Oh you’re being such a PITA mum
School Cba to deal with this
They’re rolling their eyes at you
Just take in sweets and be cool and nonchalant like me
You can’t take a knife into school
All the kids can’t not have allergies

Lighten up you bunch of fun suckers. Fuccckkkkk.

LauritaEvita · 24/06/2026 12:51

I think it would be helpful if people posting from outside of the UK stated that in their original post. Would save a lot of posts from people querying things that sound unusual.

Everything is nerve wracking. You never know when SLT are going to turn up and watch you. You’re scrutinised to death. You’re nervous for parents evenings, your stomach lurches when a parent asks you to call them or the head asks to see you. You stress about how to fit in marking, admin and prep. You worry about the exam results. You dread appraisals and observations. You dread ofsted. You stress over the register and making a mistake. You worry that a kid makes an accusation. You worry that technology will let you down. You worry about the photocopier will jam. You worry about your printing and copying budget You worry about your family, your health, your housework.
