AIBU to question what people mean by calling someone (Hannah Waddingham) a real woman?

A few stories about Hannah Waddingham over the last day or two. Cue a lot of real woman/all woman comments. From men and women. What do they mean? That she's not trans? That she's never had work done?

I mean, Susan Boyle, Mary Beard, Kathy Burke, Jo Brand are "all woman"/real women, as real as Hannah. But nobody would say that about them.

The one over riding thing I get from HW is that she is extremely comfortable in her own skin. Not in an arrogant, look at me way, but in an aspirational way. She is loved by women and men. She looks old school, ballsy, capable, sexy. She feels like a proper star. She must have had a lot of critical comments when she was younger for not being cute and tiny, it is probably only in middle age that everyone appreciates her for her striking, strong looks plus her talents at presenting (all those fluent languages at Eurovision), her acting, her singing. She also seems nice and grounded.

I saw a clip a while ago when she went on some chat show in US hosted by Ru Paul. She sashayed on in a form fitting dress, and Ru Paul’s eyes were out on stalks. He said you are a whole lotta woman aren’t you? She smirked and said I try, I try. She is a great British export!

Is that RuPaul thing actually a positive thing? It just seems like more objectifying of women.

This completely. She’s absolutely stunning and in a really interesting way. I’m sure she has had some tweakments but she absolutely doesn’t have that same Hollywood pillow face that everyone has in the US.

I think the comment is probably referring to her figure - which is a beautiful hourglass.

@RamesesCollosusShe was a sight to behold, it was complimentary. Some things can just be complimentary without checking if it fits some rigid guidelines on what is appropriate or not. Him saying, wow, would you look at those tits, would be different

Seems like he more or less did tbh.

She looks really scary to me. I think it’s a combination between her height, broad frame and kind of harsh facial features. I’m sure she’s lovely and all but to look at, she’s not what I’d describe as stereotypically feminine.

I think the opposite. She is a stereotypical woman/feminine presentation, like an old time movie star, like a blond Jane Russell, curvy, big hair, strong face.

Freekywindowguy · 24/06/2026 18:13

Shes actually surprisingly slender, its just that she has big boobs and wide hips. But her limbs are on the slimmer side. She just has the kind of stature and figure that oozes old school glam.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 24/06/2026 18:15

To me, describing someone as ‘all woman’ means that they’re attractive, sassy, confident and sexy. I’d be very pleased if someone described me in that way! Hannah Waddingham is definitely ‘all woman’.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 24/06/2026 18:26

Not sure why Hannah has been called a ‘real woman’, but I see this phrase a lot on SM comments when M&S, River Island etc use a model who is larger than a size 12. Really annoying.

BEAchDays2 · 24/06/2026 18:32

It’s because she’s broad, busty, and beautiful. It’s nonsense really though.

AlwaysExtraHot · 24/06/2026 18:40

Some US chat show host described her as ‘a lot of woman’, which I think is closer to what ‘real woman’ means in this context.

DungareesTrombonesDinos · 24/06/2026 18:43

I love her and I would LOVE to look like her. She looks so strong and healthy and she is hillarious.

TBF the women I’ve come across that would be described as bold and brassy could start a fight in an empty room. You wouldn’t want them to take a dislike to you.

I don't think you know what "bold and brassy" means or you are a bigot. Loud confident women with flashy clothing tastes and voluminous hair are no more violent than any other women. Men are scary and violent, as crime figures show, women might be loud, forthright, opinionated as many of my family are, they might argue with people, yes but I am also a tough old bird who doesn't give a fuck if someone takes a dislike to me.
Men are scary, very few women are. And Hannah is just an absolute cracker

Me too, she's quite an idol of mine, you dont see her on the telly enough in the UK in my view.

EmilyApple · 24/06/2026 19:27

‘All woman’ simply means naturally curvy/hour glass figure, I think… It’s a compliment. There are all different types of women, some are more attractive to some people, than others. And that’s ok.

AhhhSchtop · 24/06/2026 19:31

Clearly it has different connotations - curvaceous, natural, big built - to different people, as demonstrated by this thread.

HW is an absolute bloody knock out, though, whatever the intention behind the phrase aimed at her. She is statuesque, athletic, absolutely stunning. I’d kill to look like her!

anotherside · 24/06/2026 19:37

What does a “real man” look like? Rowan Atkinson? Leo Messi? Dwayne Johnson? Barack Obama?

TeacheeTeacherson · 24/06/2026 19:42

Shame. Shame. Shame.

Screamingabdabz · 24/06/2026 19:52

I call some women “real women” and what I mean by that is that they don’t people please and they don’t put up with male bullshit. They look confident and comfortable in their own skin and they know their worth. I meet them in all walks of life - ballsy headteachers, doctors, managers, mothers etc. Good for them. They are what we all should be aspiring to.

She looks like she is a mentally strong woman with strong morals and values, always instinctively knows the right thing to do, a woman to look up to.

Theraininspainishere · 24/06/2026 11:21

I don’t know who she is, but it usually refers to someone overweight, with no visible muscular ‘tone’

Miowwww! Claws out.

TheKeatingFive · 24/06/2026 20:58

I think it's the boobs.

Stupid thing to say though, agreed.

She does. Someone you'd want to be friends with who'd have your back.

Piglinginblanket · 24/06/2026 21:08

That she is gorgeous.

Of course being a woman is more than that, and our status as woman is not determined by looks. But I’m entirely unbothered by people refer to a beautiful woman this aah ash she is a total smoke show, and seems smart and fun. I hope that really is the case
