AIBU to question what people mean by calling someone (Hannah Waddingham) a real woman?

A few stories about Hannah Waddingham over the last day or two. Cue a lot of real woman/all woman comments. From men and women. What do they mean? That she's not trans? That she's never had work done?

I mean, Susan Boyle, Mary Beard, Kathy Burke, Jo Brand are "all woman"/real women, as real as Hannah. But nobody would say that about them.

Describing her as 'scary' and 'masculine' OMFG 😂😂

You know butch masculine women exist, brassy bold women exist and this is fine and they are not 'scary'?! Violent people are scary you muppet. This is the height of internalised misogyny. Women must be vanishingly tiny, quiet and take up no space at all. Fuck that shit.

TBF the women I’ve come across that would be described as bold and brassy could start a fight in an empty room. You wouldn’t want them to take a dislike to you.

Sherararara · 24/06/2026 12:32

Many of these responses are way of the mark. It means she is tall, strong, athletic and is well “put together” with her hair and make up (check out older pictures of her) combined with funny, intelligent, successful. All together it means she is classically beautiful, has her shit together and projects huge confidence. Makes her “the complete package” and very attractive to many (to both men and women).

It means they want to fuck her as they think being curvy and ‘bigger’ means you’re ‘up for it.’

also sometimes used to show how pc they are that they would shag a ‘big’ woman.

Misogyny in action.

Edited

I don’t know which Hannah Waddingham you are looking at but the one we’re all referring to is in no way curvy or a ‘bigger’ woman. She’s tall and toned.

Alittlefrustrated · 24/06/2026 12:37

Means curvaceous to me - which she is, whilst also being a healthy weight.
I think she is quite amazonian.
She's not conventionally pretty but is attractive and quite striking.

Happyjoe · 24/06/2026 12:41

She's not scary, she's always flipping smiling! The interviews I've seen she seems utterly lovely, bubbly, kind. And she's pretty darn gorgeous.

I think HW is objectively very attractive with a great figure. I do however live very much "in the North" and haven't seen one single person resembling Hannah, never mind multiple!

There are many in my current and former acquaintance circle, but I shan't name names! One actually works for the police, so maybe scary. Several also do hill running etc as hobbies.

I am not built that way, and admire it all the more.

Viviennemary · 24/06/2026 12:45

I've never heard of her but googled. She does seem a bit of an Amazon woman type. If one is even allowed to say that these days.

OtterLovesItsRock · 24/06/2026 12:48

To be fair, a separate question would be whether other styles of femininity are appreciated as they deserve in the UK. I am thinking of different cultural norms. The ones that make people 'attractive in' X place more than Y place.

I remember being treated as outside humanity/outside femininity in some places where I didn't conform, for whatever reason (too small, too big, too much hair, too little hair...travel is an eye opener).

LondonLass2026 · 24/06/2026 12:51

I've never heard of her so had to Google her. What's the issue? She looks fine.

WTF does ‘scary’ mean in relation to a persons looks, @Sartre ? Do you think HW seems dangerous or would do you harm? 🙄

I think she’s beautiful, and of course being a female aged 18+ she’s a real woman… like the rest of us.

This poster is slating children's looks on another thread so I think they are just someone who likes to slag people off.

RafaFan · 24/06/2026 13:07

Why did you pick the other four women mentioned in your post?

laurini · 24/06/2026 13:10

Sartre · 24/06/2026 11:20

She looks really scary to me. I think it’s a combination between her height, broad frame and kind of harsh facial features. I’m sure she’s lovely and all but to look at, she’s not what I’d describe as stereotypically feminine.

Grow up! Are you 10?

PinkEasterbunny · 24/06/2026 13:11

Honeyhonay · 24/06/2026 11:48

It’s a ridiculous phrase, an attempt to celebrate someone bigger but only by shitting on anyone else/ those thinner.

Absolutely this. A GP friend of mine frequently comments that (some) women who the media politely describes as 'curvy' are actually morbidly obese.

Maybe they have body issues, and/or have experienced discrimination. I remember the look of surprise someone gave me when I described an older Arab/Indian friend as stunning. (She is, but not by tall thin pale norms.)

Undertheeaves · 24/06/2026 13:18

Are people looking at the same woman as me?! She is absolutely stunning, both her physique and her face. She's also an amazing talented actress and singer and seems really nice and down to earth.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 24/06/2026 13:21

ColdAsAWitches · 24/06/2026 11:26

It's because she's got big boobs. It's as simple as that.

I agree.

Theresmagicwheretheflowersgrow · 24/06/2026 13:22

crushedgrapes · 24/06/2026 11:27

She looks very empowered, strong and confident to me, like Kate Winslet. Inhabiting her feminine power.
I think these women are inspiring and beautiful

Yes, to me she is gorgeous.

AlwaysExtraHot · 24/06/2026 13:25

She’s tall and strong-looking, but with curves too. She’s Amazonian. I think she looks fantastic. A refreshing change from the fat-jabbed look.

AbsoluteHoot · 24/06/2026 13:25

I love her androgynous look. She could wear an evening dress or a masculine suit and look stunning in either.

Real woman means big tits and big ass. Its meant this throughout my lifetime in a reaction against the heroin chic concentration camp victim look of the 90s.

Its not a positive term though, its just another way of creating an ' ideal' woman and making women who don't fit that ideal feel inferior and insecure. This hour glass shape, you can't do anything to achieve it, you either distribute body fat in those proportions or you don't. So its an unattainable ideal for most women.

Women come in all different shapes and proportions - why we can't just be ok with that, I'll never know.

So that makes someone start making mean spirited comments on Mumsnet? I'm not sure I follow your logic.

Children's looks??

wishingonastar101 · 24/06/2026 13:33

I think she is great. I would love arms like hers and I think I would love to go to the pub with her!
