AIBU to question what people mean by calling someone (Hannah Waddingham) a real woman?

A few stories about Hannah Waddingham over the last day or two. Cue a lot of real woman/all woman comments. From men and women. What do they mean? That she's not trans? That she's never had work done?

I mean, Susan Boyle, Mary Beard, Kathy Burke, Jo Brand are "all woman"/real women, as real as Hannah. But nobody would say that about them.

I think she is the most beautiful woman. Captivating. That she’s been described as “scary” and “masculine” here just goes to show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.

Honeyhonay · 24/06/2026 11:48

It’s a ridiculous phrase, an attempt to celebrate someone bigger but only by shitting on anyone else/ those thinner.

nomas · 24/06/2026 11:49

Instagram

Context is that Hannah Waddingham talked about wanting her daughter to see her eat well so the Female Quotient posted the below.

"Hannah Waddingham is just a real woman with real habits in a real body setting a reaaal good example for her 11-year-old daughter...and many other women out there"

So nothing to do with her not being trans Hmm

The Female Quotient® on Instagram: "Hannah Waddingham is just a real woman with real habits in a real body setting a reaaal good example for her 11-year-old daughter...and many other women out there 👏"

She's bold, forthright and openly sexy in her 50s. Gorgeous, sings like an angel and has not had all the facial fuckery so many fall into these days.

Lottapianos · 24/06/2026 11:52

I think she's absolutely stunning. Got no time for the 'real woman' nonsense. Yes HW is a real woman but so is Keira Knightley, and any other woman who is naturally thin and flat chested. We all come in different shapes and sizes and that's fine

Absolutely love the Penny reference. Every time I hear of a "real woman", I'll think of her 😂

Haha yes that's a real woman, in my book - she's strong and capable, holds her own at work, she's patient with idiot male co-workers (looking at you, Cridlington). I bet she's got an uncluttered house too. Sigh

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 24/06/2026 11:54

Describing her as 'scary' and 'masculine' OMFG 😂😂

You know butch masculine women exist, brassy bold women exist and this is fine and they are not 'scary'?! Violent people are scary you muppet. This is the height of internalised misogyny. Women must be vanishingly tiny, quiet and take up no space at all. Fuck that shit.

BellesAndGraces · 24/06/2026 11:56

Sartre · 24/06/2026 11:24

Yes I do. Her face is structured in a kind of scary way, I don’t know how to better articulate it.

Do all womankind a favour and have a go at articulating yourself better.

ThatCyanCat · 24/06/2026 11:56

They mean she is attractive in a more realistic and attainable way than most people in that industry. Although I disagree that contextual description should apply to her; she's ridiculously beautiful. In her case, I suspect it's because she is curvaceous.

It's not supposed to be literal. Any person born female who survives to adulthood is a real woman.

Pleaseandthankyou · 24/06/2026 11:57

She is magnificent. Stunning, clever, confident and funny

Dweetfidilove · 24/06/2026 11:59

I had a look and that body is bodying! Great figure.

Yes!! I love all of this!

She looks really scary to me. I think it’s a combination between her height, broad frame and kind of harsh facial features. I’m sure she’s lovely and all but to look at, she’s not what I’d describe as stereotypically feminine.

Are we talking about the same person? HW is stunning. Tall, elegant and beautiful.

OtterLovesItsRock · 24/06/2026 12:04

Maybe they mean that femininity does not have to conform to incel or tradwife stereotypes. Real women do not have to simper and be performatively feeble.

LooksLikeIPickedTheWrongWeekToQuitDrinking · 24/06/2026 12:05

WTF does ‘scary’ mean in relation to a persons looks, @Sartre ? Do you think HW seems dangerous or would do you harm? 🙄

I think she’s beautiful, and of course being a female aged 18+ she’s a real woman… like the rest of us.

ThatJadeLion · 24/06/2026 12:07

I have always found something about her a bit captivating

MrsKeats · 24/06/2026 12:08

It means she’s not stick thin like loads of other actresses.

Maybe you have an epigenetic memory of people looking like her but wearing helmets, brandishing spears, and arriving in small boats to burn, harrow, and loot? If you are of Saxon or Celtic stock. She is a total Viking looker 🤩

WorldCupWillie · 24/06/2026 12:09

OtterLovesItsRock · 24/06/2026 11:30

She is half Manx.
Viking blood. She looks splendid. Resembles a lot of northern England women.

My ex is Manx. He's scary.

Does she? I haven’t noticed many women round here who look like Hannah Waddingham!

I’m a forriner so a bit brown.

I love the North en masse.

If you travel from the south there is a look that changes around Leeds.

I share the same body type and height as her, this comment is horrible.

I'm so envious...I'd absolutely love to look like that...strong, powerful and healthy

VickyEadie · 24/06/2026 12:12

MrsShawnHatosy · 24/06/2026 11:25

She looks great to me. At least she’s not scarily thin.

I think she's gorgeous in all respects and extremely intelligent and talented.
