To feel really worried about climate change in this heatwave

Fulbe · 23/06/2026 22:28

This heatwave has been caused by climate change but there seems to be hardly any discussion about this at all. It seems that people are focused so much on getting air con or massive paddling/ swimming pools without thinking how that might be actually contributing to the problem. People outside the school gates idling their engines to keep their air con turned on whilst creating more pollution.

I think I remember reading somewhere that we've released 6 million years' worth of CO2 in the past 150 years. Something needs to stop but consumption and car use seem to be increasing.

Am I the only one to be concerned about this and that we're just slipping into a future of more dangerous heatwaves?

Why would this happen exactly? They're only unborn if no one brings them here-the minute you do they are just new suffering humans.

I've already seen a couple of slow wretched deaths and that was with 8 billion humans here to supposedly prevent it (though not sure how)

Don't ask me. Ask 6ate9.

I would just ask why air con is a problem but central heating isn't? I see them very similarly, try to use as little as possible for climate reasons but ultimately they serve a similar role & keep me going

I’d also like to know this. We don’t have aircon - I don’t think that many houses and flats have it in UK, though I could be wrong - but this week I’d have loved it. Our house is like an oven.

Thank you. Not in his constituency but would be it still be worth contacting him?

Yes definitely. Chris Hinchliffe also sits on the Environmental Audit Select Committee so I'm sure it's worth emailing him.

If you have business to-do in Singapore how are you supposed to go there?

Via the magic of video call.

38thparallel · 24/06/2026 21:54

Sorry, I’ve just seen another thread in which quite a few people in UK have air con in their houses/flats.

Ironfloor269 · 24/06/2026 21:59

I think the sooner the human race is wiped out from this planet, the better it is for the wildlife and all around. So I’m ok with climate change. I initially thought AI will take care of it but looks like climate change will beat it to it.

Lots of people want to tackle climate change enough to make a difference. More will join them as climate events become more severe. It's not inevitable that the tech bros and trillionaires are in charge forever.

It's too late though now isn't it?

The tipping point is almost reached and there is no turning back.

People have had their heads in the sand and ignoring scientists for 50 years on this.

It's too late unfortunately.

Climate change is already upon us and the storms are gathering.

Via the magic of video call.

And if a company is doing a multi million or even billion pound deal they should just do it all on zoom. No need to go check and verify it in person. No need to go check the assets and sites in person.

What a load of hypothetical horseshit.

No one is saying 'no more flying for anyone ever ever ever amen' are they.

It's certainly too late to save some ecosystems.

It may be too late to save many others. No-one knows for sure.

What we do know is that every step we make to decarbonise will be beneficial. There's no magic number we must/mustn't hit where everything changes.

(Or, at least, we don't know what that number is.)

No - they get someone overt here to do the checking and then discuss with them via video link.

Our inventions have buggered up the planet, but also provide us with the means to mitigate this. Video calls are one way of reducing air miles.

Well given that the primary goal for Elon’s SpaceX company is to build a self-sustaining city on the moon within 10 years, I wouldn’t be so sure. Obviously I hope he’ll fail and accidentally launch himself into orbit, never to return. 😂

He's a whackjob. Look at it seriously. Nothing on the moon will ever be self sustaining. You're operating in near hard vacuum for starters. Any breach in the habitat or suit will basically boil your blood, within 5 seconds, you're dead. No water. No atmosphere. No magnetic field, most importantly. Solar winds would do us in, if nothing else managed it first. If we somehow survived being irradiated, multiple organ failure from living long term in a low gravity environment would be next in the queue of most likely ways to die horribly.

I said "what if you need to fly for business to SG" you said "video call" and I said why that doesn't always work.

Lemonsqueezer12 · 24/06/2026 19:43

It's only really the last 75 years or so that have meet that criteria - a mere blip of general peacefulness in human history.

Yes but it’s increasing exponentially owing to technology, SM, AI and generally everything happening at a quicker pace.

Do you genuinely have good cause to think “general peacefulness” will get better in the next 50 years or so?? I think not, sadly.

No one ever suggested that no-one must ever fly, ever.

So throwing up hypothetical situations in order to prove that sometimes people need to fly is just really daft.

And if they want to check it with their own eyes, team, expertise and knowledge? If they don't trust the local 100% and aren't sure of their experience?

My DH works in the gulf on very important business. He works incredibly hard. Before the war he was there back and forth every couple of weeks. Few weeks here, few weeks there. Then the war came and they worked online, but now it's over and he's back out there. He'll be flying back soon and in a few weeks we'll go on our family holiday and fly there.

I assume most people here are remainers/rejoinders who rightly think EU free movement was and is a great benefit. Riddle me this, if you wanted to move to Cyprus, how would you get there?

What do you actually think is going to happen? NO ONE wants to tackle climate change enough to make a difference. We will continue to destroy the planet. We will
probably run out of drinking water at this rate.

It's not true that no one wants to tackle climate change, plenty of people do, but stopping people having children and just letting the human race die out (- can you imagine generations of elderly people with no one left to care for them?) is not the answer either.

I get what you are saying about us being the problem but we are actually mainly destroying our own existence on the planet, not the planet itself, it will survive in some form or other without us. Just as it did without dinosaurs for example.

It's in the 'too hard' basket now so we just ignore it. Watch the move 'Don't Look Up.' Its a good example of where we are as a species.

So we wil continue on, and the climate will get more extreme over the next 50 years, until mass migration and resource wars lead to worldwide wars, and we destroy ourselves. Its inevitable. I don't think anyone should be having children at this point, as the future is very very grim.

But, again, how does just stopping having children fix things?
Won't that just make our demise worse?

Anyway, it won't happen. People will always have children, it's built within us as with any other animal, the need to procreate and survive.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 24/06/2026 23:57

It's just so shortsighted isn't it. And such a damned waste.

If only people would totally take their foot off the accelerator until we have developed to cleaner ways to do all the things we want to do (travel, have nice warm or cool houses) - we could have it all if people were just patient and waited for the correct clean, sustainable, technology to catch up with our human desires.

Instead our impatience and wanting everything now, today, is just going to set us all on fire. Quite literally.
