To feel really worried about climate change in this heatwave

Fulbe · 23/06/2026 22:28

This heatwave has been caused by climate change but there seems to be hardly any discussion about this at all. It seems that people are focused so much on getting air con or massive paddling/ swimming pools without thinking how that might be actually contributing to the problem. People outside the school gates idling their engines to keep their air con turned on whilst creating more pollution.

I think I remember reading somewhere that we've released 6 million years' worth of CO2 in the past 150 years. Something needs to stop but consumption and car use seem to be increasing.

Am I the only one to be concerned about this and that we're just slipping into a future of more dangerous heatwaves?

Thanks for your thoughtful responses. Horrible to think that 40degree plus summers could be coming our way. I do wonder if we all emailed our MPs to say that we're concerned, whether that would change anything. I think at the moment they're so focused on immigration that climate change doesn't come into it.

Climate change will increase migration.

MissyB1 · 23/06/2026 22:56

Climate change will increase migration.

Absolutely it will. So many people will be displaced due to sea levels rising and others will suffer horrendous droughts leading to crops failing etc. People will always do what it takes to survive, including migrating.

Crushed23 · 23/06/2026 23:06

No one cares because we’re told that we’re past the point of no return now. So what’s the use in caring? There’s literally nothing we can do, apparently.

soundsys · 23/06/2026 23:10

yep! Someone today was worried their train (short UK journey) might be cancelled so they were going to fly instead 🤦🏻‍♀️

TaupeJoker · 23/06/2026 23:10

Fulbe · 23/06/2026 22:55

Yes absolutely you need everything you can do to feel comfortable. Wishing you the best of luck.

I just really hate people saying it needs to be installed in all schools and offices rather than considering lower energy adaptations to buildings like shutters. Someone said to me it's like robbing from Peter to pay Paul.

My children’s primary school (non UK) was retrofitted a few years ago to make it more energy-efficient. Better insulation, solar shading and so forth. No aircon. It really made an enormous difference though.

For many (not all) buildings there’s an awful lot that can be done to make them far more comfortable in summer. It all costs money though.

okroger · 23/06/2026 23:11

I wouldn’t worry too much. What can we do now? It’s too late anyway.

Balloonhearts · 23/06/2026 23:14

PlumGiraffe · 23/06/2026 22:47

Exactly. I suspect that humanity will meet its (self-inflicted) demise in the next few hundred years. The only people able to survive will be the super rich living into climate controlled bunkers or on the moon. I hope they’re all miserable! All that power and money and what will it all have been for?!

😂 Nobody will be living on the moon. Underground in bunkers, maybe, but not the moon. That's barely a step up the absurdity ladder from the idea of colonising Mars.

I worry too. Although my dad told me tonight about a summer in the 70’s when it was scorching hot and didn’t rain from May- September. He said he’d worked all summer long, then went to Cornwall on holiday and it started to rain. My mum went on to say it was an awful winter, and once it started raining it literally never stopped for months. Made me feel a little better.

that was in 1976 and there was 18 months of drought. Unfortunate the “we’ve had hot spells before” argument blinds people to the global problem and the year on year increasing temperatures drought and heatwaves.

Climate changes aren’t linear and gradual. Once the system starts to collapse, one event sparks others and things get worse very fast. People need to wake up and prepare, but they won’t because it’s all too alarming to face reality. Then there’s also the toxic optimism that also prevents action being taken.

It is feeling comforted that prevents anyone from doing anything.

ThePeppyOpalScroller · 23/06/2026 23:16

It was hotter, for longer, in 1976. If the UK vanished tomorrow, it wouldn't make one iota of difference to the climate. Weather is weather. So don't worry about irrelevant things you cant change. If you care about the environment, don't drive an EV, don't use the Internet, don't use a smartphone, don't buy highstreet clothes and don't eat avocado's.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 23/06/2026 23:16

PlumGiraffe · 23/06/2026 22:36

I agree. The Met Office did a briefing today predicting summer weather if we continue at the current trajectory. They estimated that by 2056 our summers will consistently reach 40-45 degrees in the UK. It’s incredibly scary and I agree it’s not being talked about enough. That said, until governments around the world continue to be in the pockets of big companies, whether that’s oil and gas, AI data centres or fast fashion, retail etc, it’s pretty bleak. Companies making huge profits with little to no regard for the long term impact are the problem here, as well as the governments failing to hold them to account.

Well hang on. A few weeks ago we were talking about the collapse of the Gulf Stream causing the UK to become much, much colder. Which is it?

Well this is where it gets exciting - we can’t actually be sure.

You read every second thread on here and people feel hard done by if they dont have the latest tech, car, ensuite, big garden, children couldnt possibly share rooms, holidays abroad and its akin to neglect if they or their kids dont have any of the above and you're accused of a 'race to the bottom' or regressing the country or peoples living standards if you dare suggest people can go without, or eat less or eat cheaper food etc

On the other hand I believe humans will die out just like other species have over time, we're not that special, we just got lucky at a particular point in evolution, there'll be another version of us in millions and billions of years too.

The planet need humanity wiped from it completely. The world needs to recover and start again the best it can.
It's all very well the government telling us to do this not to do that and fining people. But it's the likes of America, China and India who are causing so much more pollution than the UK ever will and they aren't doing much about it.

And? The planet survived before us, it will be there after us. We literally have zero control over world events. We are a tiny little island that nobody listens to. Stop stressing.

you are right to worry OP
you might be interested in this film
https://www.nebriefing.org/the-film
its being shown all over the country- https://www.nebriefing.org/screening-map

it consists of top experts explaining the various threats we face but also what can be done about them

I was just about to suggest this! It's gaining a lot of traction.

I've also had recommended the film 2040 but not managed to watch it yet.

Lots of us do care. Advice I had was keep emailing your local councillors as well as MPs, they have to log every communication so it's actually an effective way to show what issues you care about as a voter. Just one small thing that could help.

beeble347 · 23/06/2026 23:20

For instance - I actually think Kemi Badenoch talks sense on some issues. Not a chance in hell I'd vote Tory though with their policy to roll back net zero commitments.

I just plugged it into ChatGPT and it said one might cancel the other out rather nicely. So nothing to see here 👍

Fulbe · 23/06/2026 23:22

Yes I get this feeling, that there's nothing we can really do, it just feels too much like giving in to me. Well I've sent a quick email to my MP. At least I feel like I've done something, they must get their inboxes full of all sorts of hateful stuff so it will give him a nudge in the right direction. I do think it's their responsibility and too much has been pushed on us as individuals to make changes.

Well given that the primary goal for Elon’s SpaceX company is to build a self-sustaining city on the moon within 10 years, I wouldn’t be so sure. Obviously I hope he’ll fail and accidentally launch himself into orbit, never to return. 😂

GooseberryPi · 23/06/2026 23:23

It's amazing that people have continued to have children despite being told this would happen decades ago. How cruel to those children.

BobbieTables · 23/06/2026 23:23

Email your MP here and ask them to take action.

Tomorrow, our politicians will be meeting in the House of Commons to vote on the Seventh Carbon Budget. This Budget would commit the UK to cutting carbon emissions by 87 per cent by 2040, representing a huge step towards our net zero targets.
If enough MPs vote ‘YES’ tomorrow, we will see more climate-supportive policies for years to come.
This could be a real game changer for the climate.

Why do you hope SpaceX fails?

Ilikeanicecupofteainthemorning · 23/06/2026 23:24

indeed, we need to tell our politicians that we are concerned about this, while they think no one is bothered they have the excuse to do nothing- there are definitely things we can do as individuals but its collective action, nationally and internationally that is needed

Marzbars · 23/06/2026 23:24

I don't know why everyone is moaning. Its lovely. I hope we have a whole summer of it.
