AIBU to be fed up with the heatwave hysteria?

I'm getting a bit sick of the heat hysteria.

Yes it's going to be very hot for the next few days. So stay hydrated and out of the sun. Be sensible, take precautions. It's not difficult.

Millions of people around the world endure hot temperatures and yes it's uncomfortable for these few days but the crap British weather will be back soon, fear not.

People are acting quite over the top about it imo.

In countries that regularly get this heat, their buildings are build to deflect it but in
the uk our buildings are usually designed to
keep the heat. Even in northern France it’s not uncommon to have shutters on the windows. Their lifestyles are built around the heat, ours are not.

We have children with autism, one of mine has no idea that he feels hot, so is prone to overheating or dressing in black joggers to walk to college! Fortunately he is good at hydrating!

@JustinesGraspingAvariceI’m guessing you aren’t living in any of the 34+ regions? And if you are I’m guessing you’re a liar to be honest.

Our walk to school is 35 mins, my son was visibly sweating and very grumpy when we got to the building this morning at 8.50am and that was wearing his lightest, coolest clothing.

I kind of love a bit of heatwave hysteria. It feels kind of mad and British, like our usual weather fascination, on steroids.

You don't see anything sinister in it then?

I do!

Most countries have AC so why not join them.
No way am I going through the heat wave again like i did before.
Ive already been called smug this morning online lol but at least im not boiling.

AC contributes to the problem of climate change.

Annoying but true!

We have had climate change since time began.

I’m so glad you’re able to cope so well with the heat! Many people can’t and a red weather warning is a danger to life even for fit and healthy people! There will be many extra deaths over the next few days, lets hope it’s non of your family or friends!!

Agreed. I’m classed as normally very fit and healthy but since childhood the only thing that makes me ill is heat and I’ve had repeated warnings from doctors that it’s probably the only thing that will bring me down but will do it seriously as it has done most hot summers. Yet to look at me you’d think I’d be fine. Goes to show it can happen to those you least expect.

True in some, not in the poorer ones, especially poorer area. I spent a fair bit of time in North Africa, stayed in many flats with no air conditioning and some without fly screens. They may be painted white, but in almost 50 C, it makes almost no difference.

The main difference there is that businesses tend to close for the large part of the day when the temps are too much and then reopen at night. People do become quite nocturnal.... obviously many exceptions, hospitals etc. But yes, construction workers are done by lunchtime when it goes over 40 C.

I do think some people pretend they’re totally fine with the heat as a kind of badge of honour to prove how resilient and ‘hard’ they are.

Does it make one somehow superior to not be sweating under the boobs for days on end?

lovecotswoldsliving · 24/06/2026 17:09

I am in a red heat zone and our school is closed.
Today the bin men arrived to collect my recycling at midday - they were clearly suffering. I offered them cold cans of coke, which they were glad to receive. Please think of those working outside and try and offer them refreshments.

Northern France is not known for its hot weather and the lifestyle is certainly NOT built around the heat, the exact opposite. Windows are big, the typical architecture of a house in northern france is very similar to typical british victorian houses. Brick houses, terraced etc...
Yes to shutters though, but it's for the light, not to keep the house fresh.

Paris is boiling hot, BECAUSE it's not built for the heat. The stone used stores a lot of heat, so the city never cools down at night. Floors are made of hardwood, which stores heat as well.

Mondaymorningblue · 24/06/2026 17:19

Some people are affected a lot more than others, for some elderly people and people with medical conditions which make them unable to regulate their temperature the heat can be unbearable and dangerous.

KitTea3 · 24/06/2026 17:24

I mean yes I'd love to say it's just a bit of heat, deal with it...

...but I'm on 3 different medications that all differently affect how my body tolerates heat and leave me extremely more vulnerable to heatstroke...as in...dropping dead level of heatstroke (and I already work in shit environment with ovens...) And I don't have a choice not to work. My body literally cannot regulate my body temp and my heart is under excess stress due to the heat and medication... So I think I'm allowed to complain just a little bit? 😬🥵

FFSItsTooHot · 14/08/2026 17:47

Well good for you that you can cope with the heat. I'm actually surprised that you didn't come out with the standard heat worshippers remark of 'Its not a heatwave,it's called summer'. Some people (like myself) have a medical condition or are on medication that makes it really difficult to cope with high temperatures. So saying things like it's not difficult is unhelpful.

I think some people are scared to admit that they're not comfortable with extreme heat as there's so much hype, usually whipped up by the media, that very hot weather is wonderful. I've been told to stop moaning and that I'm a misery because I can't cope with temperatures of over 28 degrees for days on end. I never used to be bothered by it,but in recent years,it's really affected me. I only discovered a few months ago that I'm on 3 medications that affect my body's ability to cool down. So I'm not being a killjoy.

I'm the same. On 3 different meds that affect how my body tolerates heat. Thankfully I'm not working in a hot environment. I really do sympathise.

Ha OP write that in June and here we are in August with 35 yesterday and 33 today (London).
It’s awful. The hosepipe ban has made my garden look like a desert and I didn’t bother replanting the window boxes. I have no energy. I was in hospital a couple weeks ago and the poor staff! It was an oven in some wards.
A one off heatwave, sure a few days we can survive it. But endless days of sun and no rain? We get to complain! And just wait til the poor harvests hits the costs of food over the next few months!

Pinkissmart · 14/08/2026 20:03

There’s fires everywhere- it’s hardly ‘hysteria’ 👎

FFSItsTooHot · 14/08/2026 21:43

Just realised that this thread was started back in June. And here we are now,mid August in the middle of our fifth heatwave this summer. Heatwave hysteria indeed.
