AIBU to be fed up with the heatwave hysteria?

I'm getting a bit sick of the heat hysteria.

Yes it's going to be very hot for the next few days. So stay hydrated and out of the sun. Be sensible, take precautions. It's not difficult.

Millions of people around the world endure hot temperatures and yes it's uncomfortable for these few days but the crap British weather will be back soon, fear not.

People are acting quite over the top about it imo.

I can cope with heat. Spent years in a hot country. Much hotter than the UK and loved it.
Over here it’s the humidity that I find unbearable. It’s a killer.

ZenNudist · 24/06/2026 00:13

It's going to peak at 32C here on Thursday. That's hardly ridiculous. That's summer. I'm sure it's hotter down south but it's back to normal bu the weekend. Most people just looking to skive off.

I agree, obviously it's different for the elderly etc, but they're not going out to work or whatever so I don't see why the whole country has to shut down?

I’ve just come back from France. They are giving the same advice there. It’s not just the UK displaying a lack of moral fibre which is what you seem to be suggesting.

Apparently it literally is, because people don’t sweat in high humidity

As I said in an earlier post. Some posters are completely unable to understand IT’S MUCH HOTTER IN THE FUCKING SOUTH. You’re right, 32 isn’t ridiculous but it’s HOTTER IN THE SOUT. If it was only 32 all of us in the red zone wouldn’t be constantly arguing the toss with the stupid people NOT in the red zone.

I work in a kitchen. Today it hit 46 degrees in there. Countless people work in jobs where they are stuck in dangerously high temperatures. It is not hysteria.

But do you / those people whinge about it all day, every day or do you crack on?

This isn't going away. We need to get used to it and start planning for it. Where are the water fountains? The sheltered seating outside. The aircon in buildings, especially schools.

Less whinging, more preparation!

Forty people have drowned in France since Thursday due to heatwave-related deaths. I don't think Sébastien Lecornu warning people about this is remotely hysterical.

More like stupid decisions about swimming.

Granted, they mightnt have decided to swim in cooler weather, but maybe they're the French equivalent of Americans who try to deep fry frozen turkeys at Thanksgiving.

That's why you all need to stop feeling superior and laughing at Americans for having AC, and start exploring your options.

Ooh look at me, surviving the heat!! Fuck right off.

I’m certainly not asking for special dispensation for myself, yet my FIL has COPD (20% lung capacity as it goes and has oxygen 24 hours a day) and my DF has severe Asthma. Stick them on a bus shall we and tell them to carry on regardless because everyone else has to?

Don’t have an air conditioned car? ‘Well that’s your fault’. Late for work? ‘Well leave earlier’.

Old school mentality, end of. No, I’m not talking about ‘well I don’t cope well in the heat’, I’m talking about people who could literally die because of the conditions. So up yours for bowing down and complying.

I care for frail and elderly people and they never drink enough water usually anyway and not drinking enough can be very dangerous in these temperatures as they don't notice that they are dehydrated, making them more prone to UTIs, sepsis, a stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure.... and more.

lovemelongtime · 23/06/2026 21:05

It's absolutely FKN ridiculous. I am amazed the rest of the world manages to function. God help us if they were all like us. Just crack on and stop moaning.

And yes, I did have to commute to work on a train and yes mum home office is like a cauldron, but we moan for 10 months a year about the cold.

Good for you.

Worldwide, around half a million people die each year because of heat related problems.

lightreceiver · 24/06/2026 00:32

hairbearbunches · 23/06/2026 20:53

You quite agree, do you? What do you class as a real heatwave then? Because I’m telling you now that 1976’s endless 32 degrees was way more bearable than 39 degrees now, even for just 3 days.

You keep your coat on tomorrow and see what heat stroke feels like.

I think Justine may be taking the piss…..

15 kids died in the UK swimming in open water in warmer weather this year. Call them stupid if you want and then make a total non-sequitur about cooking.

Guess you're on the side of 'this is hysteria' - rather than wanting to send out messages to try and save just one life from going into a river. But, yes, they are all just stupid. Stupid kids. Stupid, stupid, dead kids. WTAF.

Lifeomars · 24/06/2026 00:47

I love sunshine and summer but not this level of heat, it feels dangerous and the very high pollen count is making me almost blind as my eyes run so much and while the anitihistamines help they do not give total relief. There is a new baby in my family too and temperatures in the high 30's are not good for them. I live in a city so the air feels thick, clammy and grimy, guess it is a lot better close to the coast. I can cope but I would love the temperature to drop by at least 8 degrees and for a storm to clear the air.

Bookbears · 24/06/2026 00:49

Squishymama · 23/06/2026 22:17

I honestly don’t know what all the fuss is about, yes there’s people with cognitive decline putting their jumpers and fires on, but for us “normal” people, is there a risk to life, I mean is there really?

I'm perimenopausal, god damn I’ve been sweating, but closing schools? I feel like people are bending to “everyone else is doing it so we should” and quite frankly it’s silly, a couple of years ago I was sat waiting for my daughter to finish school and according to my car it was 40 degrees, no mention of schools closing. Makes me feel like I’m in some sort of parallel universe.

Some schools need to be closed for the safety of pupils and staff. A local school near me which isn’t very old is supposed to be a eco school that keeps warm in winter and cool in the summer. As a result there is no aircon etc. The temperature inside some of the classrooms today were 40 degrees. Clearly the eco building materials didn’t work so they closed.

Most schools in the UK are not built to withstand these temperatures. Unless they have aircon throughout which alot of the older buildings do not, they have no choice but to close. My son’s school is open tomorrow but I am fully expecting a call to say I need to collect him at some point.

Where I grew up we hit 35-38°C for a week or 2 at a time over the Summer months and staying at 27-30°C for those cooler days. Nobody died prematurely, schools stayed open (but we sometimes were allowed to leave an hour earlier) people carried on working.
The only difference to the uk is that we have lots of lakes and outdoor swimming pools to cool down in.

I'm sure people will be just fine as long as they are sensible. (Plenty to drink, stay in shade / indoors and get a cold food bath or shower!)

If those are the usual summer temperatures in your part of the world, of course you won’t see excess deaths when they occur as normal at the usual time of year. It’s a different story when there are periods of abnormally hot weather like this.

Kerry242 · 24/06/2026 01:41

Live and let live.

Some people are struggling with the heat - you're struggling with the people who are struggling with the heat.

It's not hard to give people some grace, afterall, as you say yourself - it's a few days.

No other differences? Were schools etc not ventilated better? A lot of UK buildings are not airconned etc or built for the heat.

Also I agree with pp pointing out people in your country would be better acclimatised.

What was this country, if you're happy to say?

MrDobbs · 24/06/2026 01:58

I'm fed up with the offhand comments about "people in other countries just get on with it". Anyone who has lived and worked in hot countries knows it's not like that.

You really think people in Mumbai and Cape Town don't moan about the heat when it gets up above 35 Deg C? It's all some people talk about for 2 months.

They don't just go about their normal daily business like it was a breezy 25 degree day. Fruit and veg markets shut during the day and start operating evenings and nights. Construction work starts at dawn and is mostly done by midday. In rural areas, livestock dies. No one really just gets on with it like normal when it's 37-40 degrees.

So people in the UK, feel free to not pretend it's just like a nice spring day with a bit of sun. But give me a month of 28-30 degrees any time, perfect.

There is a massive irony to this.

The assumption that they will then be somewhere better.

A large number will be in homes which are even worse.

Was about to post something similar. I would cheerfully swap with anyone who thinks I am being hysterical about dreading the next few days.

ReallyLoveYourPeaches · 24/06/2026 03:23

My classroom topped out at 37°C today, with its dumb, unopenable 'safety' windows (they open 4 cm). 31 children limp as wilted lettuce with glazed eyes and glistening foreheads by 10.30 am. We spent the rest of the day learning on the floor in a corridor. Pupils with epilepsy and diabetes a particular worry.

SquirrelGG · 23/06/2026 23:35

Some of us in "other countries" are no more set up for hot weather than the UK is. We don't have cooler houses, we don't start and finish earlier, and we most certainly don't have siestas.

That just adds to my point if you’re suffering the same as we are. It’s not that people in other countries (this is what people say, I was just quoting what I read) are just cracking on with it then, as is suggested! So still a moot point.

I don’t cope in the heat, I never have. I get heat exausyion very quickly. My daughter becomes delirious in hot weather. I come from a family who don’t either. I prefer the cold 🤷🏻‍♀️ It takes time to acclimatise to hot weather. I have lived in hot countries where it has taken a good couple of months to do so, but also aircon was a saviour. We seem to have the big jumps in temp this year with no gradual incline. I’m a big wet I know, but the heat and not being able to cool my bedroom is my limit. We all have a limit I guess

It’s a few days. Literally a few days

Userxyd · 24/06/2026 04:48

It’s ridiculous to be so selfish and ignorant as a presumable adult and post this crap tbh. As if you exist alone in your world with no interest in, care for or dependence on for example the NHS, roads, schools, farmers, other countries’ food production, elderly/ ill/ very small relatives or people you know etc? Are you really that ignorant or do you just not GAF about anyone else or the long term implications of these increasingly common dangerous heatwaves?? “Get air con” is not the answer to a house fire, wildfires, droughts or food shortages is it?? Not to mention the effects on plants and animals and the natural world. Grow up and educate yourself - it’s this type of dumb ignorance and bubble mentality that’s making everything worse and killing our planet.
