To think Andy Burnham is smug?

To think Andy Burnham is smug and presumptuous. Just that really and I have no particular political preference, disillusioned with the lot!

Publicly thanking someone is ‘dirty and underhand’ ? It’s certainly not underhanded if it was done in public. Yes, it is likely Josh Simons will get another constituency, if he wants one. Many in the party think he has done them a favour. He may get a job as a SpAd, that would be public, with a public salary. If it’s in the public sector it would be a good but not exceptional salary. This is your idea of political corruption?
Perhaps you could cut and paste some info about who Boris put in the Lords or those Covid contracts, you’ll be shocked! Shocked I tell you.

He'll probably be straight into the HoL and able to legislate over us all for life (or many years if it ever gets reformed). It stinks and if the Tories did it we would be outraged.

unistress · 23/06/2026 06:14

He is beyond smug. His statement about Keir Starmer was incredibly arrogant: 'Thanks, Keir, now fuck off...' basically, and that selfie with all the fawning MPs was just vile. Crass, disrespectful and really somewhat Trumpian. What has happened is a disgrace and I agree with the PP who said he thinks he has the god-given right to be PM. Well, we'll see what he does with it and he better be bloody good because otherwise this is totally it for Labour and they will soon be in the position the Tories are in now. The fact that the party seems happy to just install him with no scrutiny as to what he plans to do is absolutely unforgiveable.

Clavinova · 22/06/2026 21:27

There should be. Imagine the fuss if Theresa May's husband had multiple ear piercings.

Hysterical! Count her piercings but ignore her Cambridge education, career and charity work. Says it all about the Tories and Reform.

It wouldn’t surprise me. Josh Simons had to resign as a minster not long ago following the scandal over Labour Together.

Im sure that played a part in him stepping down to make way for the King of the North. I’m also sure a lot of regular folk don’t have a clue.

@BlueMinded But you can’t say why it was wrong. You mention an old boys club - he did a favour for someone from the same political faction. That’s how all politics works everywhere. You can’t point to one single illegal act. It wasn’t hidden, no money changed hands, no force, no police, no dodgy contract. Nothing.Nada. Zip.
You ‘think’ it was wrong you ‘feelz’ it was wrong but you can’t put a case together apart from you think he might get a job, somewhere at some point doing something. And as the man works in politics and has similar views to AB that’s very likely, but you can’t say why it was wrong.

This is the nub of the issue really, because you don’t like someone or agree with them you want to find something illegal. You can’t put a coherent case together just keep saying it must be wrong cos you don’t like it. Like good old @Clavinova asking about hair colour - I don’t like it so it’s immoral or illegal.

Tell my why it’s rotten - rotten implies illegal, immoral or hidden.

AnneElliott · 23/06/2026 08:14

IAmBeaIDrinkTea · 22/06/2026 12:55

Exactly - never ending stream of PMs every 5 minutes when the Conservative were in charge and not a big public cry fest for a General Election like there is now
Starmer should have stayed and not played right into the media's hands imo.

Both Theresa May and Boris Johnson called a GE after they got in as PM. With differing results of course. Liz Truss didn’t but she didn’t last more than 45 days? And Rishi Sunak was facing an election anyway within 3 years and called it earlier than he needed to.

I guessed you probably had unusually coloured hair from your posts - 'leftie activist type' so not based on your appearance alone.

Joke is on you. I have been left wing all my life, but have had unnatural hair colours for only 2 years. And better a leftie activist type than someone who judges people on their number of ear piercings, which is so shallow a fly couldn't use it as a paddling pool.

I don't know why you are persistently diminishing someone else's opinion by banging on about " feelz ". Public opinion surveys on all based on feelings, so should we ignore them too? Forget about the electorates dissatisfaction with Labour, because they're just ' feelings'? Ignore the outrage over Labour's initial refusal to reverse the two child cap as, again they're just feelings? Nothing illegal, so must be ok then. Forget about the language used over Gaza? Again, just feelings, the party hasn't legally done anything wrong. Equally, there was nothing illegal about Burnham move into the top spot, but morally it's questionable. it's the type of power move the Tories would play and we were promised time and again Labour weren't like that, they were the grown ups.

No doubt your friendship group on Mumsnet includes posters who comment on Boris Johnson's hair and Donald Trump's skin tone. Do they know you think they are shallow?

Very smug indeed. It's not like he's achieved anything in the last 19 hours to be so conceited for. We need intelligent, considered and humble politicians, like Nigel

Settlersa · 23/06/2026 09:47

She is obviously making a statement with her clothes, piercings, jewellery, hair, footwear... She wants to be noticed for her style - I have noticed and I'm not keen on the look. Just my personal opinion. I also thought 'matching' black and white outfits the day after the Makerfield by-election (Mr and Mrs Burnham) was a bit naff. No doubt equally shallow people have complimented her on her style rather than focusing on her Cambridge degree.

He does look impermeable and not very bright. I’m holding out zero hope.

How does he "not look bright"? Makes no sense.
He comes from a normal background and went to Cambridge uni, so yeah, obviously he's thick...

You need to doubt more, Clav. Boris Johnson is ancient history, and Trump's tan is not a topic of discussion among the folk I hang out with.

Judge not, eh?

Hi Clav, I am probably one of that friendship group.

You are scared/judgemental of a politician's wife, not the politician itself.

Johnson's hair ruffle was famoulsy staged and Trump, his makeup is the least of our worries.

Boris Johnson is ancient history

Boris Johnson was prime minister only four years ago. So, it's ok to comment on hair if you are left-wing and shallow but not if you are right-wing and shallow? Grin

Trump's tan is not a topic of discussion among the folk I hang out with

You obviously don't know your Mumsnet friends very well, e.g.

'[Trump] is a very weird shade of orange today'
'They are all lining up to kiss the orange arse'

I was quoting you by the way. Do you have a problem with different skin tones?

You would obviously.

Whereas you would never be judgemental of a politician's wife? Trump's wife? Johnson's wife? Sunak's wife?

Not on the way they look or dress, no.

Trump's colour is make-up not his skin colour, so what was that comment about?

Did his parents have a big detached house in a village so quite middle class

Well, I certainly wouldn't. Spouses shouldn't be a target. I mean, look at the way people on here left Starmer's wife completely alone and never said a thing about her appearance.

So, you wouldn't compliment their look or dress either? Or comment on how much their clothes cost?

You previously referred to Trump's orange arse. Do you often comment on makeup? Sounds a bit shallow to me.
