To think Andy Burnham is smug?

To think Andy Burnham is smug and presumptuous. Just that really and I have no particular political preference, disillusioned with the lot!

And so you not think Andy Burnham worked to understand his many briefs

His ten year old briefs? I’m sure he worked very hard to understand them. Are they still relevant?

Perhaps Andy Burnham could do the whole bloody country a favour now and say asap that he accepts the ruling of the Supreme Court on the Equality Act 2010 and the EHRC’s subsequent Guidelines.

And then move on. For the love of god, move the Labour Party on. And hopefully put Sarah Owen, Nadia Whittome and their mental colleagues on the W&E Select Committee back in their box of woo.

It should be an easy argument to make in a way...
He's already shown that he's a fan of devolving powers to regions. Obviously the EHRC isn't a region, but it is a body set up to decide on these matters and arguably should be independent of political/politicians whims. This principle protects the rights of women, but also arguably other groups including trans people who might be vulnerable to the whims of the next government. Essentially the principle of upholding the EA means everyone's rights are protected in the long run even if in the short term some people feel they have lost out. And contrast to the Reform promises to get rid of the EA/seemingly put decisions on who is protected and when exclusively in the hands of the ruling party. Even someone who is very pro-trans rights should be able to see the danger in that.

@Clavinovahahahhaha you’re making a joke about what women look like. Come on luv why don’t you give us a smile. Predictable.

What was dirty or underhand!

Well actually, Andy Burnham thanked the outgoing Labour MP for his act of 'incredible selflessness' in stepping aside. I await with interest to see if Burnham rewards the 'incredibly selfless' Josh Simons with a plum job.

Publicly thanking someone is ‘dirty and underhand’ ? It’s certainly not underhanded if it was done in public. Yes, it is likely Josh Simons will get another constituency, if he wants one. Many in the party think he has done them a favour. He may get a job as a SpAd, that would be public, with a public salary. If it’s in the public sector it would be a good but not exceptional salary. This is your idea of political corruption?
Perhaps you could cut and paste some info about who Boris put in the Lords or those Covid contracts, you’ll be shocked! Shocked I tell you.

I'm interested to see polling

70% of respondents on this thread think Andy Burnham is smug and presumptuous so that's a good start.

That hardly represents the population of England or even the population of mum‘s net

I thought she looked severe and a bit scary with all those ear piercings. Just my personal opinion.

Publicly thanking someone is ‘dirty and underhand’?

No, I clearly didn't say that. Referring to someone as 'incredibly selfless' is underhand if it then turns out that they have already been offered a plum job in Number 10 for example.

Is there a rule on number of piercings allowed for wife's of potential Prime Ministers?

There should be. Imagine the fuss if Theresa May's husband had multiple ear piercings.

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/06/2026 21:35

@Clavinova it was selfless when he did it as there was no guarantee AB would be elected. I assume he is a close friend of AB, they have worked together when AB was mayor and he was a local MP. Why wouldn’t you give them a job as an advisor? Political advisors in number 10 are political friends of the PM, we all know that, the jobs are public and above board. Every PM gives jobs to their allies, it would be foolish not to.
Unless you mean a civil service job and we both know that can’t happen.

I guessed you probably had unusually coloured hair from your posts - 'leftie activist type' so not based on your appearance alone.

Exactly.

Oh c'mon, even you must admit this stinks of the old boys club mentality. Step aside so your chum with lofty aspirations can take your seat and be rewarded handsomely with a nice cushy job. It's rotten to the core. Surely people should expect more from Labour.

I hope so.

I'm just coming back to the thread, and looking at the new developments like this 😕🙄😁
Somebody's scared of piercings, and thinks colourful hair is something to deride.
How pathetic, but typical of MN.
Sounds cool to me! (Oh, and no, I don't have any piercings or colourful hair 😁)

No I don't think he's smug.
I think he's a very talented and capable politician.
Capable enough to be leader of the Labour Party and whatever that leads on to.

YABU. I have hoped that he would become PM for years and never thought it possible. Am hoping that he will build a strong team and set a fair agenda for change. Hoping that we enter a season of stability.
