AIBU to feel the media is pushing Starmer out?

To feel the media is forcing Starmer out and to be annoyed by this.

They need constant drama and content and this is done at the expense of the country. Starmer is boring but things are improving despite major problems like Iran in the background.

If this were 20 years ago he’d have been safe. They are treating government like football clubs and want Burnham as they think he’s more showbiz. These foreign owner media outlets don’t care about the stability of this country, they just want headlines and drama on X to drum up more drama for headlines and opinion pieces where the media all interview each other.

The country is becoming ungovernable because them and I’m sick of it.

It’s an absolute shambles. And shame on the Labour MPs for not getting behind their leader.
This is not good for our country, and I fear it’s just opening the door to Reform - so I think they’re being being naive thinking a change in leader will enable them to retain their seats. This just makes me lose faith in Labour.

Puppylucky · 22/06/2026 09:42

Congratulations to everyone in the media (and on here) who forced a decent man out.

So, following your logic OP - Burnham is also listening to the media, correct?

Yes , that’s why he is taking his chance now. No doubt, he will be in the media firing line next

MissIonX · 22/06/2026 09:43

I liked Starmer, and think it's a loss for the country that he's resigned.

I also miss the days when we had quality MPs in the cabinet as well. We could do with a Gordon Brown or John Reid right about now.

Gloriia · 22/06/2026 09:43

He is embarrassing to watch. His speech was stiff and awkward. He just didn't have it. His image is that of a wet, weak man with a whiny voice.

He was never a confident, convincing leader.

soddingspiderseason · 22/06/2026 09:44

A good, decent man forced out. I wish him well as he didn’t deserve the way he’s been treated.

Largely the media reflect public opinion.

If Starmer was doing well, got great local election results, didn't make questionable appointments and the public was backing him the media wouldn't go against that.

But when the public dislike a politician or want them out the media will get behind that and contribute to their demise.

Ultimately the public control everything in politics. The way they apply pressure can be a bit more subtle than people realise, ie through backbenchers, or through the media, but it is the public who are in control.

I cannot believe people can't see the manipulation that social and other forms of media are actively doing. It's anti democracy, people are seeing sound bites and algorithms that feed them biased information and mainly misinformation a lot of the time.

Public opinion is shaped by what they are fed, and it's a constant bombardment of how awful Keir Starmer and Labour are. It's scary how it's happened.

LuckyHazelFox · 22/06/2026 09:45

Starmer pushed himself. Glad he's gone and taken his two tier shit legacy with him. I'm not holding out any hope for his replacement.

@GasPanicis right plus the media is acting as it did from partygate onwards for the last gov.

palranom · 22/06/2026 09:46

Politics is a mad game in the UK. There's not enough opposition and balance, by that I mean the FPTP system does not encourage wider thinking. It's impossible for any difference to emerge between Red and Blue to break through. I know Reform is biting at heels, but still.

Also, the electorate is not as savvy as we might like to think. It's black, white, right, left, and very little middle ground to be seen.

Constant dissatisfaction with the least thing and everything collapses, nothing seems to have a chance to get going and try to solve things.

In advance I'll say that I am not in UK. Sometimes when you're in the middle of it you can't see it, so my views are just mine and no reflection on Britain as a whole. How could I dare, it's your country!

Wipeywipey · 22/06/2026 09:46

I mean, how does the electorate actually get a say in this? People on here wanging on about what the public think, but that is the point in having elections. The media and the Labour Party don't get to make those choices for the country.

Whoever has allowed that to be aired has opened the door to Russian the state wide. This is what happens when you get rid of real journalists and let AI make choices for Billionaires.

Oh grow up.

Any adult who thinks men are women should not be leading the country. And is not a decent man.

That may be true but his party voted him leader and then won a general election with him at the helm. Traitors.

Puppylucky · 22/06/2026 09:47

And it's already started for Burnham - The Times referred to him this morning as a lame duck PM without a mandate so you can see how that narrative will play out

Dragonscaledaisy · 22/06/2026 09:48

Nothing to do with the media. Starmer failed to perform and was forced to resign because of a lack of support from his own MPs.

Trainstrike · 22/06/2026 09:48

https://fullfact.org/government-tracker/ this doesn't look like a hugely poor record for two years?

You only expect favourable coverage?

Serious question @Gloriia what fuels your level of vitriol? I genuinely can't understand why / how anyone can reach this level of hatred for a public figure with limited impact on your life.

Well, exactly. The instability of a merry go round of prime ministers is bad enough but the prospect of his replacement is horrendous.

WestwardHo1 · 22/06/2026 09:50

I absolutely agree with you.

The Murdoch owned media will not be happy until Reform are in government so they stir and stir and stir.

After Gordon Brown lost power I went to see him speak. He simply said "I couldn't fight them". It was very sad, and this is coming from someone who has never voted Labour in her life.

Duvetdayneeded · 22/06/2026 09:51

He’s the worst prime minister with the worst ratings and the worst record…. But this shit show party is just going to get worse.

Watching with interest who the new chancellor will be. Probably just as well Reeves won't survive because she always looks miserably drained.

Homelanders · 22/06/2026 09:52

I don't understand what Burnham will do differently?

He couldn't fight them anymore! The weakness of the Labour Party, summed up in one sentence.

Not sure blaming the media has much mileage when you preside over devastatingly bad local election results and your own party decides to axe you.

Starmer had the opportunity to do better and failed on multiple counts. Labour MPS have been sold on the fact that Burnham will be better and will give them a chance of winning the next election (no doubt of course that some people will think the MPS were fooled by the media too).

I think you'd also have a hard time making a case for the media influicing our choice of diplomats.
