Nah, they are very protective and will swarm anyone who is perceived to be taking shots at her, and of course given the numbers there are some pockets of crazy, but really for the most part they are quite a fun and harmless fandom

I hadn't thought of sport as that is not a 'celebrity', but I would have to say the most toxic fans are football fans, as pointed out earlier. As a Scot, I nominate Celtic and Rangers fans as they most toxic fanbase - lawless scum terrorising and making a mess of their own communities, with regressive sectarianism thrown into the toxic mix.

The One Direction fans who believed that Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson were in a relationship, to the extent of claiming that Louis’ baby was his and Harry’s baby. There were a few threads in Mumsnet about it at the time, and I remember being astounded that they all seemed to really believe that it was true, and posted about all the ‘evidence’. Very odd.

That was the first time I ever came across the phrase ‘shipping’ (is that what it’s called?). I’d never known girl fans of boy bands wanting them to be romantically linked to each other before. When I was young we’d dream of marrying our favourite pop stars, not them marrying each other.

Yes, quite. It always used to be the case that gay male popstars would carefully stay quiet about it and sing songs about loving girls, as they knew that a great many amongst their young female fanbase would crush on them, maybe even dream of marrying them one day and could easily lose interest (and stop buying their records) if they knew that he would never, ever love them back romantically!

Apologies, I’ve remembered the story wrongly 🙈 Apparently the rumours were that the baby was fake, and a way of covering up the relationship between Harry and Louis. I’ve found a couple of stories online about it, but I can’t add the links to this post for some reason!

I remember this despite having no interest in One Direction whatsoever. If I recall, they were talking about tipping the baby out of its pram or knocking it out of its mother's arms so they could prove it was a fake. Very disturbing.
