Neighbour shouts for cat every night

feduppn · 20/06/2026 22:30

So my neighbour has multiple kittens/cats and every night she calls for them to come in.
Usually she does this for around 10 minutes at 9pm.

Tonight she has been yelling for a good half hour, my kids are asleep and she yells in the back garden close to the back bedroom windows.

I just don't think this is very considerate.

I have had to resist the urge to tell her to STFU.

AIBU

Just shush her from your garden?
This worked for me when a man (of course) was shout-sneezing and coughing, letting it all out in a nearby garden. After about the seventh time, I hissed “Sshhhhh!” and he stopped.

Do cats ever come when called? I’ve been trained to wander around shaking a tin of dreamies making gentle wind noises wsssss wsss wsss.

My cats come when I call most of the time. When they don’t, I worry. I don’t shout, but I go outside and around the calling for them a little bit louder, but not shouting. None of my neighbors have ever complained. I believe they understand a person’s deep attachment to their pets.

Inmyuggs · 21/06/2026 05:11

I always believed i nit being to quiet so they can sleep thru noise.
Oh well its a short space if time she calls them

She is still out here yelling.
I can hear her voice all the way from her back garden to my living room at the front.

Not sure why people have voted IABU

Because quite clearly they are nuts as well.😂

Human beings are very weird indeed. You cannot control cats - hence the phrase - 'it was like herding a load of cats'

Lovingapeacefulgarden · 21/06/2026 08:41

Your kids need to learn to sleep through noise as they will have to in life. 9pm is not late although 10.35 pm is late. However we have kid's in my area still running around screaming at 9.45 pm on my street. Its annoying and ridiculously loud with no parents interested enough to stop them but its life.

9 pm annoying but part and parcel of having neighbours
10.35 pm inconsiderate for any to be shouting at that time I’d tell her to STFU

redboxerclub · 21/06/2026 08:48

She is calling her cat not running a brothel or a trap house.

I think you need to move to place with no neighbours. You just live next to a crazy cat lady.

cannot believe people get irate about letting a puppy out or calling a cat and generally people getting irate about being woken up.

Flamingojune · 21/06/2026 09:29

Put in a cat flap and let them roam free. No need to call them

Maybe the cats haven't come home like usual and she's beside herself with worry? Maybe one of them is trapped in someone's shed. Or run over. If pop out and see what's going on. You can equally be concerned and see if she's ready to quiet it down. Or post about it on the internet.

Or even ask her if you can help look for the lost cats

Because they do the same thing or are relatives of gobby knickers.

Error404FucksNotFound · 21/06/2026 14:17

I bet they're ignoring her. Cats can hear you opening a can from a mile away. If they're not coming its not because they cant hear her. She needs to give them something they want.
My family's farm has cats and they are trained to come in at night when a bell is rung.

Bell = dinner.

Ring that fucker once and 7 cats come running from all directions.

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 20/06/2026 22:43

Obviously one or more of the cats are missing. She's not doing it for her own entertainment.

Nope, my neighbour also does this. Every night. Has done for the three years we've lived here.

9pm is hardly late. The world doesn’t revolve around your children being asleep!

Shouldn’t revolve around this ladies cats either. She’s still yelling at 10.35.

Whosthetabbynow · 21/06/2026 14:22

It’s a pisser but nothing you can do. We’ve currently got the weekend dad a few doors away shouting “woooo, whoarrrr” in the back garden as the smell of weed floats in through the windows.

feduppn · 21/06/2026 15:10

She has had cats previously killed round here.
She has 3 cats now and I presume that she wants them in.

However, she leaves the kitchen window open all night so they can come in so I don't get the loud shouting every night for them to come in.

She also has those wind chimes which are also extremely annoying.

My DP’s old neighbour would do this. Her cats were called Pissquick and Shittykitty.

nevernotmaybe · 21/06/2026 20:29

MyArtfulGreySloth · 20/06/2026 22:39

What weirdo thinks it’s ok to be yelling at 9pm though? I certainly wouldn’t do it, especially every bloody night. How inconsiderate are you.

Some people are twisted and dont understand the connection and family animals truly are, so would see this as inconsiderate. Others are decent.

Just differences of people.

PaperTyger · 21/06/2026 20:35

@feduppn I have voted uabu
Whilst it's undoubtedly annoying I've dealt with just so so so so so much worse .

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 21/06/2026 20:39

I voted YABU as I highly doubt it’s affecting your children’s sleep. It’s you that it’s winding up as you’ve taken a disliking to her. Live and let live.

Shopsrshut23 · 21/06/2026 20:45

I call my cat in every night before I go to bed. Never given it a second thought I might actually be disturbing someone. I don't like my nextdoor neighbour's BBQ smells wafting over to my washing. I'm not gonna say anything though. They have every right. We all live in close proximity and it's normal life. Loved the sound of everyone watering their gardens when I'd gone to bed as a kid. It was a comfort that people were still out there and I wasn't alone.

Mine does most of the time. I actively trained her to though. Although she is still a cat and her basic nature to ignore people does still show sonetimes. 😆

We also trained her to do a few tricks.

Sennelier1 · 22/06/2026 18:28

I think I would start shouting too. Think about all your pre-school friends for inspiration and scream their names loudly and insistently for the whole neighbourhood to hear. Stephen! Marcus! Elodie! Laura! The other Laura!

And when you run out of names start yelling for the whole royal family.

If your neighbour doesn't get the message, you will at least have had a bit of fun 🤩

Tel12 · 22/06/2026 18:31

I get it's annoying but perhaps on occasion your children might get a little loud in the garden which your neighbour may possibly find irritating. Give and take.

Wimin123 · 22/06/2026 18:49

Deadringer · 20/06/2026 22:41

Its a pain but when we live surrounded by other people they are going to annoy us at times.

That’s why we moved rurally 😂 bliss.

DaisyChain505 · 22/06/2026 18:55

I would pop a note round asking if she could call them a little earlier as it’s waking up your sleeping children and also give her a bag of dreamies as you’d heard they’re good for cat recall.

This might remind her that she’s disturbing other people and she might stop or spend less time calling for them.
