Neighbour shouts for cat every night

feduppn · 20/06/2026 22:30

So my neighbour has multiple kittens/cats and every night she calls for them to come in.
Usually she does this for around 10 minutes at 9pm.

Tonight she has been yelling for a good half hour, my kids are asleep and she yells in the back garden close to the back bedroom windows.

I just don't think this is very considerate.

I have had to resist the urge to tell her to STFU.

AIBU

My cats ignore me so would be pointless. Little fuckers. She’s lucky hers all come running.

UndoRedo · 20/06/2026 23:32

Mine are twats and know that they are supposed to be in at night but take their time. However I have trackers so don't have to guess where they are while they completely ignore the rules

DixonD · 20/06/2026 23:35

YABU.

I call for my cats every night. But not until about 1am 😂. I do it quietly though, and if they don’t appear I’ll go looking for them.

@MyArtfulGreySloth - my thoughts exactly.

Personally I think she's bonkers, she leaves the kitchen window open all day and night so they can come and go.
Not sure why she feels the need to shout every night.

i’m sure your kids are no angels?!
Buy her a good cat flap, and pay to have it fitted, problem solved

whatcanthematterbe81 · 20/06/2026 23:40

Do the kids wake up? Sorry if I’ve missed that

BagBitch · 20/06/2026 23:45

@feduppnI think live on the same street at you my neighbour does this all hours day! Standing at the backdoor shouting when the kitchen window is open all the time Angry

OtterLovesItsRock · 20/06/2026 23:50

This could be an element of a great Fringe show.

OnTheBoardwalk · 20/06/2026 23:52

@OnlyGarden oh ok thanks I’ll try these, especially as one of mine (only 4) is starting to get tarter build up

they usually take my legs from under me after a shake of a Dreamies pack

Overtheatlantic · 20/06/2026 23:55

My next door neighbour does this because his cat is usually busy trying to move in with someone else.

Larrythecatforpm · 20/06/2026 23:55

I am your neighbour 😂 Long as my cats come home safe I don’t really care if my shouting effects others. Rather shout than wake up to being them road kill in the morning!

AllTheOtherCats · 20/06/2026 23:58

As someone who doesn’t have children but does have cats and whose life is constantly made miserable by the noise made by other people’s kids (especially in the summertime), YAB very U. Leave the woman alone. I can guarantee that your children disturb the neighbours much more than this person calling for her cats for just ten minutes a day.

Bufftailed · 21/06/2026 00:01

Just leave it. As far as possible don’t complain or they’ll complain about what you do. My neighbours are very loud in their garden but I live with it and they don’t complain to me. Unless it’s clearly unreasonable which this is not, leave it

9pm is hardly late. The world doesn’t revolve around your children being asleep!

I’m find it really amusing that on another thread about screaming children disturbing people who work at home the working at home person has to put up and shut up and is being completely unreasonable, but when it’s their little darlings being disturbed…..different story.

Totally agree. Children screaming all the time. If I had a cat I would shout for it

Secretseverywhere · 21/06/2026 00:07

Do cats ever come when called? I’ve been trained to wander around shaking a tin of dreamies making gentle wind noises wsssss wsss wsss.

SqueakyFromme · 21/06/2026 00:08

BinBasedKarma · 20/06/2026 23:21

Cats will come home when they are ready. Unless they have actually been run over, in which case shouting is not going to help.

What a nasty post

feduppn · 21/06/2026 00:09

Actually she has 2 kids and they are at their dads hence the louder than usual screaming.
To those posting as if my kids annoy her, it's her kids that are feral and not mine!

So wind your neck in to those implying that my kids somehow create all this noise that bothers her!

Her kids would kick the football over purpose over the fence multiple times a day, play on my front garden look in my windows, place the bikes on our cars, her kids are just as annoying as her.

We thought given that they have fucked off to their dads for the weekend there would be some peace and quiet but no!

My kids have only just started playing out in the garden as they have only just started to walk (twins).

My evil neighbour does that too, but normally after midnight. It’s almost like white noise now and if she’s prowling around outside in the dark, it’ll scare off any lurking burglars.

Meadowfinch · 21/06/2026 01:19

Your dcs will be used to it as a familiar noise, and sleep through it. I'd just ignore her.

ThatJadeLion · 21/06/2026 01:20

It's 9pm not midnight. I'm sure your kids make noise (like they all do). It's a bit of give and take when you live close to people. Couldn't get worked up over this, it's not late.

SpottyPyjama · 21/06/2026 01:28

Cat owners are notoriously inconsiderate and selfish op. Im sorry you have to put up with this.

GentleSheep · 21/06/2026 01:31

At this time of year felines seem to enjoy being out very late. Maybe not even coming home. I just leave mine to it! They'll come back when they want. I call out for mine twice, 20 seconds maximum, that's it! I really don't want to disturb neighbours late at night.

MyLimeGuide · 21/06/2026 01:37

Maybe she is lonely and wants her cat friend to come in and give her big old snuggles

MeanwhileinGilead · 21/06/2026 01:41

Not sure why people have voted IABU

I voted YABU because you haven't suggested a practical way that she could call the cats home without making noise. While it may normally be fine for them to be out all night, she may also be aware of a specific threat in the area that you don't know about. Hawks, coyotes, bobcats, lynx, stray dogs, bears, cougars, fisher cats, eagles, some species of owl, and even foxes (delete as necessary; I don't know where you live) can all pose a serious but temporary danger. No matter how much you dislike your neighbour, I think that the cats' survival and safety is more important than uninterrupted sleep, especially as the prolonged late calling seems to be a one-off.

(None of the follow-up stuff about feral children, open windows, your speculation on the neighbour's possible MH issues, etc. influenced my vote as it wasn't in your OP and even now seems irrelevant to the question.)
