I got to my early 40s without ever needing to claim but circumstances find me single and paying the lions share of child related outgoings.

I work full time on£31,000 and have found out this year thanks to applying that I get on average about £800 from UC. It has been an absolute life changer and will hopefully be able to afford a modest uk holiday actually during the summer holidays and pay the school back some debt im in for after school care.

So many benefits bashing threads so I just wanted to present another side that as a cash strapped mum of two who works full time, UC is making a positive difference to our life. I didn't even think id qualify!

Who are these people because they will be able to claim uc

They are the ones on £100k 😄

It won't get any better for the next 3 years either. Socialists in charge of 💰 recipe for disaster, as we are finding out.

Am I missing the point?

I don't understand the viability of booking a caravan holiday as a struggling single mother amidst a cost-of-living crisis.

LuckyHazelFox · 20/06/2026 21:28

XenoBitch · 20/06/2026 21:23

Yes, and very different to years back. They used to actually help you find work.

They have bouncers on the door too.

😆 🤣 😂 😹 pmsfl

Yes i went to the job centre last week and there was security on the door.

Security for what? I am perplexed.

To give her kids something nice and make memories after one of the shittest years of their lives

The op doesn't have a combined household income of 60k

No? Two parents earning £30k each. Even if they are not together, that's £60k. Their living arrangements are not thr taxpayers problem to fix.

Well I suppose some claimants get angry when told they are going to be sanctioned for not job searching enough or whatever. If you get told you are going to be docked money from your £92 a week , then that could provoke anger. Not everyone on benefits is getting £800 a month on top of a 31k wage. Some work coaches can be horrible. Mine wasn't but I guess that's because I've worked for 40 years and am just having to claim JSA for a couple of weeks until I get a start date for my new job.

They should be sanctioned if they're not applying for enough jobs. Most jobs are one-click apply.

Baconandonions · 20/06/2026 21:32

UC is a funny thing.

I deal with applications for some friends.

Family A - Husband & Wife both in poor health so unable to work £2853 per month.

Family B - Single Parent & Child £1250 per month.

Both say they struggle to live after paying rent/bills.

That makes no sense does your ex pay all your bills for you or do you live in seperate houses with seperate cars and seperate bills and seperate expenses

catspyjamas1 · 20/06/2026 21:33

XenoBitch · 20/06/2026 21:25

OP is not on a combined household income of £60k. She is on £31k... that is in her opening post.

The ex or whatever, father to the children, earns the same amount as OP. That's £60k. Why is the taxpayer being asked to top up her living expenses? For a holiday?!?!

A poster with a short memory by any chance? The Cons were hardly doing a great job keeping benefits down either.

Well, it seems some can budget for a caravan holiday, but not their kids.

Are they sanctioned though, we have to wonder. The whole system is so lax now.

I'd love to know how family A get so much i assume they have high rental costs

Yes of course they are

What are the bouncers for? Goodness!

Isn’t it obvious? When these claimants are being handed their huge envelopes containing massive wedges of cash, they need to be escorted back to wherever they’ve parked their Bentley. 🙄

(Obviously I am being sarcastic. The security are there to protect the staff from potentially aggressive clients).

Yes i think people do still get sanctioned. I've seen it on facebook UC sites.

There should be sanctions. Jobs are easy to apply for these days.
