I got to my early 40s without ever needing to claim but circumstances find me single and paying the lions share of child related outgoings.

I work full time on£31,000 and have found out this year thanks to applying that I get on average about £800 from UC. It has been an absolute life changer and will hopefully be able to afford a modest uk holiday actually during the summer holidays and pay the school back some debt im in for after school care.

So many benefits bashing threads so I just wanted to present another side that as a cash strapped mum of two who works full time, UC is making a positive difference to our life. I didn't even think id qualify!

Don't be so obtuse FFS

Of course, because people on beneftis are reckless with money. Hence why some people on here things they should be paid in vouchers.

No, some people are really good with money. When you have so little, you learn to count every penny, spot bargains etc.

I know someone on benefits who is amazing when it comes to grocery shopping in terms of shopping around, getting good deals etc. She is also not shy at all when it comes to getting things she needs off freecycle and similar. She rarely buys anything full price. So she manages to save up money to go to see her favourite bands.

There's only so much budgeting one can do with limited financial resources.

A caravan holiday is delightful but a luxury.

Isn’t that down to how they manage their money? Perhaps they don’t smoke, drink , spend lots on themselves or have expensive subscriptions.

Well their money is going somewhere

If your finances are that limited then look to see if you're entitled to uc

Gone are the days where you'd sit in a job centre and be forced to take positions or you wouldn't receive benefits. It seems to have got out of hand now with no middle ground.

The Job Centre have nothing to do with jobs anymore. They are just a benefit administration centre.

Gone are the days you could walk in and see a board of vacancies. Now you can't even go in unless you have an appointment.

TheWorthyNewt · 20/06/2026 21:19

Yes and didn't get anywhere. I know a family as well who were struggling, the DWP said they'd actually been overpaid and they were made to pay it back.

Because you earn to much so why are you struggling so much

BlueFahrenheit · 20/06/2026 21:21

Well, what an illuminating thread!

So, benefits are so well-paid, holidays can be arranged and had despite living in a cost-of-living crisis. I thought groceries and utilities would be the priority, but I guess I am wrong! Let's spend a few hundred on a caravan holiday ...

I would be very careful saying stuff like this on an online forum. Enjoy the money and keep shhh 🤫

What a privileged position to be in. I wish I wasn't disabled so I didn't have to claim benefits but I don't have that luxury

If someone has a money left over after bills and food to save for a little holiday then fair play to them.

catspyjamas1 · 20/06/2026 21:23

I really wish British people understood actual poverty. You people have no idea. I've been in the UK for around 25 years now from Africa and am shocked to see that the privileges you all take for granted that really shocked me two decades ago is still so prevalent. Benefits is a privilege, having a paying job is a privilege and a holiday is a privilege. A combined household income of £60k and claiming UC is taking the f*cking piss. The entire system needs to be scrapped and started again for those that need it.

Yes, and very different to years back. They used to actually help you find work.

They have bouncers on the door too.

This thread is an insult to those who are genuinely struggling and impoverished.

Many people can't even afford to fill their cupboards, and we're talking about having enough money to arrange a caravan holiday despite 'struggling'.

Probably because you’re not a miserable bitter person. Unfortunately lots are.

@MrsPapillon @curiositykilledthecat0

but if you yourself couldn't afford to do that, you might feel a bit bitter about it, no?

The op doesn't have a combined household income of 60k

It won't get any better for the next 3 years either. Socialists in charge of 💰 recipe for disaster, as we are finding out.

Forbes estimates that Bezos paid about $2.7 billion in tax last year.

I can never tell if the people who say that billionaires don't pay tax are deliberately saying something ridiculous (not sure why?) or are so economically illiterate that they genuinely don't understand how taxation works.
