I see this multiple times a day and it makes me wonder if people pronounce it "ekt" when they speak.

YABU. They say excetera excetera.
Etc | Mumsnet

YANBU

For balance!

ToadRage · 19/06/2026 19:23

Considering the long version is etcetera, it should be obvious however I have heard multiple people who exetera.

Tillow4ever · 19/06/2026 19:24

YANBU and it pisses me off! The word is etcetera so it makes zero sense for people to use ect instead of etc!

weirdly though my phone did not auto correct the wrong spelling there…

Then they’re pronouncing it incorrectly.

swqa · 19/06/2026 19:26

Yes YABU because it's a boring and repetitive thread.

The people who make that mistake are not suddenly going to stop because someone has started yet another thread about it.

And in AIBU instead of Pedants' Corner.

Is that so? Who'd have thunk it.

GrandHighPoohbah · 19/06/2026 19:28

It's almost as annoying as "aksed" instead of "asked". Why, just why? It's not even easier to say!

arlequin · 20/06/2026 08:35

@BleedinglyObvioussometimes aksed is from a dialect.

it’s also a natural language evolution. Like asterisk vs asterix

I’ve thought that saying asterix instead of asterisk comes from the cartoon character Asterix.

Some very funny comments on here, thank you for your support! I haven't posted in Pedants' Corner because the people who need to see this won't be going there, I'm sure.

RomainingCalm · 20/06/2026 09:20

I read a work report recently that had four versions - ECT, ECT., ect, and ect. - used all the way through it. At least if you’re going to get it wrong do it consistently!

That tired old excuse for language deterioration again. Yawn.
