Why do people say et cetera but then write ect?

They don’t. They say ‘ecksettera’ so assume it’s etc.

When etc and ect have been discussed on these threads before someone said that Nigel Farage says ec settera but I haven't heard him say it yet. That could be because I don't hang on his every word.

I like Susie Dent but I fear that she may be an ec settera person. I'll have to try to persuade myself that my ears are at fault when I think she's said it. Someone might listen and say what they think.

Regarding Farage, that was me and I have heard him say it since.

It's ect ect as any fule kno. Nigel Molesworth reference, not Farage; if you see it from someone you think of as sensible (and probably 50+) then it may be due to those books/radio series as a quote joke, like using a Python phrase.
