Does anyone else notice when people say Ek cetera instead of Et cetera?
I confess I find it irritating, although obviously very minor in the great scheme of things!

😁

I can't be asked to correct that kind of fopar

TheRealBalonz · 13/03/2025 20:12

It might be because they’re not aware of the phonemic chart. It doesn’t bother me as much as someone saying or writing “would/could/should of” 😅.

MsAmerica · 18/03/2025 02:11

Yes, but it's pretty minor in comparison with everything else, like someone saying "axe" instead of "ask."

PinkoPonko · 18/03/2025 02:54

Yes, that’s why so many people shorten it as ect.

... And now Yul Brinner is playing on loop in my head.

Could of, should of, would of are my least favourite 😬

WmmW · 18/03/2025 03:02

I say it like this even though I know how it's spelt.
How are you supposed to pronounce it?
Ay cetera like in French?
Ette cetera?
Eh cetera?

Ett seh-teh-rah.

It's Latin, so the "t" in "et" is pronounced (unlike French). Ett Setterah.

It probably ought to be "Ett Ketterah", though. Another Latin phrase, "Ceteris paribus" ("All other things being equal"), is usually pronounced "Cateriss Parrybus".

Corfumanchu · 31/08/2025 00:24

Never heard anyone say this

That's shocking. I thought everyone knows it's "coulda, shoulda, woulda."
