To refuse coffee someone else rejected?

36Camelliasandcounting · Today 07:34

It’s happened several times recently. The barista has made a drink that wasn’t the right specification for whoever ordered it. One of those things right? It happens.

Except several times recently, the barista has then poured that rejected coffee into a takeaway cup from the ‘having in’ mug and tried to serve to me. I’ve refused and been met with a fair bit of eye-rolling. Most recently I just asked for a refund and after I left a review online stating the incident had happened several times recently including twice that week and as a result I wouldn’t be going back.

The manager has since replied stating it’s policy and widely appreciated by customers to minimise waste?!

AIBU to think no one wants someone else’s rejected coffee?

YABU: I’m happy to take other customers rejected coffee.

YANBU: No. Even worse if the coffee isn’t the right spec and/or has been stood on the side whilst the original drink was remade so is then cold when presented to you.

I've never seen any coffee shop staff member palm off a rejected coffee on someone else?! Surely to have rejected it the client must have touched and or tasted it? And it would get cold and the crema/froth messed up if you transfer it from one cup to another.

You need to stop using that shop?! They must be arseholes who take messed up orders out of the workers wages if they're so desperate to recycle them.

Cherrytree86 · Today 12:36

Ignore anyone trying to tell you YABU.

most coffees will be ruined by pouring them like that. Not to mention cooling.

the price of these drinks means they should be just right.

if its in same cup , then id consider it as long as still hot, if it was a eg special coffee and repored then surley that defeats having a special coffee if it reblends the ingredients etc

Exactly my order, without the extra ice!

So, if there was a cup of what what exactly your order (but not quite as had extra ice), sitting behind the counter, and which was proffered to you by an assistant, would you take it and pay full price.

Taking into account that you don’t know where it has been since it was first made. Maybe brought to a table, sipped by someone whose saliva is now an ‘extra’ as it were. Indeed you don’t know if some weirdo added something in or not. In the knowledge that the coffee shop tries to fob off earlier discards anew (and at full price, the cheeky b&ggers). That is aside from it maybe sitting there for a while. They could chuck in some extra ice, and ‘hey presto’.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · Today 13:07

I think the word ‘rejected’ is a bit harsh. I’m allergic to caffeine. I have to have decaf otherwise I’ll throw up. I always double check because it’s an easy thing for the barista to get wrong. If it’s not decaf, I can’t have it, so if someone else could have it, I don’t see the problem. Likewise I’d happily take a decaf if someone else preferred the full-caffeine version.

I wouldn't take it. Once I was ordering at a well known coffee shop. I watched as the barrister made the drinks, except mine. There was an already prepared drink at the side and he put that on my tray with the other drinks. Didn't know the background to it but thought fair enough.

I sat down, took a sip and it was luke warm. I like my drinks hot, went back to the counter and asked for a new one. So no I wouldn't do that again as probably similar would happen.

No, the OP says clearly that the problem has been that the barista made the wrong coffee.

I’ve stopped going to my usual cafe because the baristas apparently have better things to do than make a proper coffee (for £4.50). Like pour one they mistook the order of into another cup (what happen d to the temperature/ froth?!)/ update their phone/ sit down sulking. It’s saved me a lot of money and bad vibes.

Let the café owners know, especially if it's an independent place.

Fupoffyagrasshole · Today 14:09

it being poured into another cup - hell no

I wouldnt be paying near 4£ for that - want a nice fresh foamy one

Imisssleep88 · Today 14:42

If it was returned from a table even via staff, I would be wondering why it was returned, at what point did they realise it was wrong? Did they read it out and the person said no it should be x y z, or did they realise once they had had a sip? I wouldn't want someone else's reject in case it had been sipped personally, even worse if it's not the order you wanted anyway. They should learn from their mistakes and stop wasting their own stock, not palm it off on other paying customers.

Yes that’s unreasonable. If the coffee was just made, why not?! This happened at Ikea actually today. I ordered for my daughter meatballs and while I was about to tell the lady serving not to add the sauce cause my DD cannot have dairy, she added the sauce. I explained to her and she said no worries and gave it to the person behind us. I didn’t find it weird. Is she meant to throw it in the bin?!

36Camelliasandcounting · Today 15:05

@abbynabby23 but the plate of food never left the woman behind you's line of sight? In these instances, the coffees have literally been across the shop and back then left on the side for 5+ minutes whilst other drinks were made to replace the error.

So they were cold.

And presumably the meatballs weren't tipped from one plate to another. Pouring a cappucino from a mug into a take-away cup fundamentally changes the texture and taste of the drink.

It's completely different.

OP posts:
Daftypants · Today 15:26

I’d not accept that .
For starters pouring it from the cup to a takeaway cup messes it up , all the foam for a cappuccino or the velvety milk for a flat white will spoil the drink and it’s expensive enough so why should I drink their mistake ??

DugnuttEyeBoogies · Today 15:30

dizzydizzydizzy · Today 08:01

Exactly this!

But it sounds from OP update like it was taken to a sit in table, so the customer might have tasted it then complained! Ewwww grim!!

Left · Today 15:33

Ahhhh I don’t want some sipped coffee, that’s grim! Sounds like the staff need better training and more support from management.

Eww, so does the person it was intended for take a sip and then reject it because it’s not up to standard? No way would I want that! Coffee out is not cheap and I would expect the coffee I paid for to be made for me, not someone’s reject coffee.

Of course if the coffee is sitting around for 5 min i wouldn’t like it either cause usually gets cold. But if they made a mistake just before, I wouldn’t care.

I’ve rejected coffee before because it’s not hot enough. I wouldn’t expect it to be served to someone else. Who wants expensive lukewarm coffee.

nikkianns · Today 16:41

The context changes everything here. In the situation you’re describing in your comments where it’s been stood for 5+ minutes, been out of sight and is a drink that doesn’t transfer well (like your cappuccino) then no, YANBU, but if it’s a standard drink that’s fresh and has no issues transferring from indoor to takeaway cup (like this post makes it seem since there isn’t many details) then YABU.

ginasevern · Today 17:42

Rejecting a cup of coffee is not going to destroy the planet. It's a cup of hot water with flavouring in it. Pouring a flat white or cappuccino (for example) from a mug to another receptacle is going to completely negate the drink's texture and cool it down. So basically yeah, at £4 a pop I'd expect a fresh drink.

Cherrytree86 · Today 18:07

Holdonforsummer · Today 07:35

If it is the same order as yours, or even something you like, whyever not? Or should we all just kill the planet a bit more?

@Holdonforsummer

na, I’m sorry but I wouldn’t give a shit…if I’m paying for a coffee out I want it to be perfect, not messed about with

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · Today 18:09

If its the exact same order and immediately before you so it is still hot, I wouldn't mind and it seems better than chucking it away. Otherwise definitely a no from me. When I've seen it happen before, the coffee shop offered it out for free - "I've got an iced vanilla latte going free if anyone wants" situation - I said yes then!

MummyWillow1 · Today 18:13

Are they offering it to you for free? If so YABU, if they are trying to fob you off and making you pay full price then YANBU.

Cherrytree86 · Today 18:59

Would anyone on here have the coffee if it had been to another table and somebody had a tiny sip of it?
