To refuse coffee someone else rejected?

36Camelliasandcounting · Today 07:34

It’s happened several times recently. The barista has made a drink that wasn’t the right specification for whoever ordered it. One of those things right? It happens.

Except several times recently, the barista has then poured that rejected coffee into a takeaway cup from the ‘having in’ mug and tried to serve to me. I’ve refused and been met with a fair bit of eye-rolling. Most recently I just asked for a refund and after I left a review online stating the incident had happened several times recently including twice that week and as a result I wouldn’t be going back.

The manager has since replied stating it’s policy and widely appreciated by customers to minimise waste?!

AIBU to think no one wants someone else’s rejected coffee?

YABU: I’m happy to take other customers rejected coffee.

YANBU: No. Even worse if the coffee isn’t the right spec and/or has been stood on the side whilst the original drink was remade so is then cold when presented to you.

OP posts:

So the company charges twice over for one, deteriorating drink?

Do men or sharply dressed people get offered seconds so often, or is it just 'ordinary women' targeted as paypigs for slops?

Gender is entirely irrelevant to this. I'd hardly imagine it's been sat there long enough to go cold either like the OP stated. It's very much " entitled"

Gymnopedie · Today 11:20

the coffees aren’t hot. By the time they’ve come back from the table, waited in the cup for the right drink to be remade, the right drink served and then it’s been filled into a paper cup for me they’re stone cold.

And I'd be wondering how that table had determined that it was the wrong one. Had a mouthful and then realised?

There's a clear difference between an espresso and a cappucino, but if it was less obvious?

@EveningSpread the coffees aren’t hot. By the time they’ve come back from the table, waited in the cup for the right drink to be remade, the right drink served and then it’s been filled into a paper cup for me they’re stone cold.

That’s also not the point. Tipping a coffee from a proper mug into a paper cup changes the texture of it - the cappuccino loses all the fluffy foam and just turns the regular milk. So it’s not the drink you ordered. And even on the rare occasion it is hot, it’s bloody disgusting because the texture is wrong - it’s no longer creamy but just like drinking tea. I’m not paying £4.50 for that!

You're not wrong.

The manager should be retraining the staff and the customer should be given the choice AND offered a discount because its their literal waste.

Rather than guiltily the customer because of The Planet they should take responsibility for getting it right first time (never mind my eye roll that they talk about The Planet whilst presumably chucking away the takeaway cup that was used for five minutes amd can't be reused due to allergy risk 😑)

Well, they do have to make two drinks, as the original person presumably gets a new one. It's just that the OP, or anyone else in this situation, gets charged full price for a reject.

This sounds like the most ridiculous post.
First world problems and all that hey 😂
Would I want a drink that has been touched by someone else? No... But if it was made hadn't been touched and it was the same order as mine I can't see the issue? Seems a bit dramatic

What is ridiculous about it?

OP was being dismissed, guilt tripped by the employee, then by their manager for a substandard premium cost service/drink and just wanted some second opinions. Nothing wrong with that on a casual chat forum.............

If you are looking for a ridiculous post maybe look at your own 🤔

Gender is never an irrelevant factor in how people are treated in public.

Are you female? Have you reached the age of invisibility?

Entitled is not a bad word.

I agree that customers are entitled to have the fresh drink they requested and paid for. They are not recycling receptacles PAYING for the privilege of the slightly cooler, sniffed-at, maybe different drink.

The staff can drink it themselves if they are so keen.

Yes, so they have charged twice for the one drink.

If offering seconds, waive a new charge.

If it is the same order as yours, or even something you like, whyever not? Or should we all just kill the planet a bit more?

The barrister could just make the correct drink for each customer at the time they order it - so that each individual is receiving the drink they have ordered; fresh, hot and exclusively because they ordered it.

Not be given something they don't know how long it's been sat on the side for. Was it given to a customer before them? Tasted? Contaminated?

This isn't unreasonable expectations. The responsibility of ensuring that it is correct and not wasted is on the barrister, not the customer.

If my order was a skinny latte and the rejected coffee was a skinny latte, I'd just be pleased I got my coffee a bit sooner tbh.

It's not like the previous customer took a sip out of it and then refused it 🙄

I would assume they had sipped it or how would they know it's wrong

It's simple though really isn't it... The person has had a poor experience on more than one occasion. Yet keeps returning? Why would you keep going back for what you feel is substandard service? Just get a new coffee shop and move on. It's not that deep

Yes I'm female and no not an invisible age 😂 I just don't feel the need to look at every situation as some form of discrimination , it's just rubbish service. Move on and find a new coffee shop it's not difficult

It is substandard service. Not a feeling.
Customer can raise it with management if the coffee shop otherwise suits her.
Employees damaging or letting down the business need to be retrained or let go.
Standards run deep.

It is worth analysing patterns and finding reasons why
I am not talking about individual paranoia.
A choice not to be passive.

RaininSummer · Today 11:50

If it's untouched and still hot what is the problem? Might be nice if they gave a discount though as you have saved them waste.

ChipswithMayonnaise · Today 11:54

I like HOT coffee

Caniweartheseones · Today 12:03

I’ve stopped going to my usual cafe because the baristas apparently have better things to do than make a proper coffee (for £4.50). Like pour one they mistook the order of into another cup (what happen d to the temperature/ froth?!)/ update their phone/ sit down sulking. It’s saved me a lot of money and bad vibes.

Lillabet · Today 12:11

As a trained barista, this is extremely poor practice and smacks of penny pinching by the coffee shop. Pouring from a sit in cup to a take out cup changes the texture of the milk and shouldn't be done! I wouldn't be happy at £4/5 a coffee to be given a second hand coffee, at that price I want a freshly made coffee!

Tangled123 · Today 12:12

If the first cup was made while I was in the queue, I saw the customer reject it and the cup stay behind the counter until it was offered to me, I would probably accept it even though I would prefer a fresh one.

I would have thought a coffee place wouldn’t be allowed to resell a cup of coffee that went out of their sight/ control though? They wouldn’t be able to guarantee the cup is the same as it was when they first sold it as the customer could have drank some, spiked it, added sugar etc. At that point, it’s basically leftovers and completely fine for OP to reject, without even considering the pouring into another cup.

Maybe if they didn't resolutely charge first world prices, people wouldn't mind so much!

Arcticienne · Today 12:23

Hesitated to join in with this one as the circumstances as described seem so unlikely. OP must be the unluckiest coffee buyer alive. Jeezo - “several times” ? Only advice I can offer … don’t bother buying any Lotto tickets.

ConstanzeMozart · Today 12:27

I wouldn't want e.g. a flat white if it had been waiting and cooling, and been tipped from an 'in' cup into a takeaway one. The texture and order the milk and coffee is poured is the main point.
But I've been offered a coffee before that's not quite what I'd order (I'm a flat white person and have been offered a latte) when the drink was made and called and no one claimed it. If it's a freshly made coffee, and free, I don't see why not.
But anyway, this cafe sounds shite, OP. I'd just go somewhere else.

Yes it is simple, read a thread, don’t think it is “deep” enough for you….. move on. There is even a handy hide option if really not interested.

It is a casual chat forum, absolutely no need to try to be the thread police, judge and jury rolled into one.

WonderingAndOverthinking · Today 12:32

They should be taking more care whilst making customer’s drinks to “minimise waste.”

Chiapotayto · Today 12:33

Noshowlomo · Today 07:37

Well my order is always a decaf oat milk iced latte with vanilla syrup, extra ice so I don’t think it would be one of those, so I’d reject it

Exactly my order, without the extra ice!
