Burnham has won. More turmoil?

Now Burnham has won, it will trigger a leadership contest, and if he wins, a new chancellor of the exchequer.

Surely this cannot be good for the country, or its finances?

YABU - Burnham is a true leader who will improve the UK for everyone and be a competent and respected leader.

YANBU - FFS, here we go again.

I dont think you read my post correctly. I know very well what the age of austerity means. My point is people are only stopping there when they are looking back.

Is it even 14 years of austerity anyway? Surely all the money spent during covid wasn't austerity?

Nah makes you look a fool when you’re defending the most popular PM in history. A PM who appoints a paedo pal for a high profile job! Well done to you for tying yourself in knots trying to defend that excuse of a PM👏

Eh? This is Mumsnet not Twitter. People generally make sensible points on here that get discussed and gently argued. Not sure you understand the rules.

cloudtreecarpet · Yesterday 18:12

Flyingintotheunknown · Yesterday 17:57

Neither do you! It’s quite laughable seeing you defend a failed MP who everyone wants to see the back of even though he absolutely couldn’t give a shit about you lol

Don't turn it back on me, i'm not the one making sweeping statements that I can't back up.

I still want your evidence that Starmer is "a laughing stock on the world stage".
The more you faff and turn it back on me with insults the more obvious it is that you can't provide any evidence.

Flyingintotheunknown · Yesterday 18:13

SadiraOfTyr · Yesterday 18:05

Because that’s what the government called it when George Osborne introduced it in 2010. Cameron and Osborne literally referred to it as “the age of austerity”.

20 years ago was 2006. The country had yet to suffer the shock of the Great Recession and was doing pretty damn well.

Yes I believe George Osborne did. But the way Starmer and co use it as a go to line in every weekly PMQs and in interviews is getting extremely boring now. It’s like they have a very limited vocabulary and resort to the same words/ lines over and over again. We are sick of hearing it now.

Don’t get me started on Brown and the recession. 🤦‍♀️

Before that there were different policies.

Oh well you only need to watch the viral videos of him on the world stage where Trump snubbed him and the Pakistani president was pissing himself and the Italian PM had to stop herself laughing.
Oh and not to mention being Trump’s lapdog by picking up some documents he dropped.

He’s a laughing stock to the majority of British people on the world stage and most people I have spoken to say he’s an embarrassment to us! If you seriously think other world leaders think highly of him then you need to give your head a wobble!

I’m sorry, but this is nonsense. I’m not sure where you are getting your ‘viral videos’ from, but its clearly not what the rest of us are seeing.

Austerity was a policy of retrenchment and fiscal consolidation. No, COVID wasn't part of that, it was an unexpected event. But the government was still making policy according to austerity rhetoric - cutting and freezing public sector pay, cutting public services, increased social security conditionality and so forth. Basically a welfare state is an integral part of a capitalist economy but that economy has moved on from the early days of the welfare state so the state has to adapt to its changing needs. Austerity was more about doing that and smashing the vestiges of the post war settlement.

I genuinely don’t understand how a single person votes Labour. I can only assume they are supportive of others subsidising them. There is no other rational answer. They simply have to be economically selfish.

Because the rest are worse.
If you're writing that as a Tory then you're skipping clown school.
If you're further right then you need to stop voting.

Hi - I think this person is just trying to cause dissent and division, as they are just saying daft stuff with no evidence. Its the Reform/right wing tactic - throw enough shit and hope some will stick. I’m ignoring them from here on in as they have nothing of substance to say x

I did say aside from Trump & your other examples are pretty weak.

Also "most people I have spoken to" is pretty crap too.
Maybe "most people I have spoken to" like him?
Doesn't quite work as an arguement does it? It could mean two people, ten people or just my good mate in the pub who agrees with everything I say.

Really not that impressive.

Youre really not that impressive either tying yourself in knots trying to defend a failed PM. Rated the worst PM in British history in fact. But let’s agree to disagree because we are just going around in circles.

He isn't the "worst PM in history" at all, he was just given that label by the right wing press and it is then parroted by people like you.
How can he possibly be worse than Boris Johnson & the way he dealt with the pandemic or Liz Truss & the way she almost single handedly bankrupted the country?

You know it's nonsense and you clearly don't like people not letting you get away with your sweeping statements that have no real basis in fact.

Flyingintotheunknown · Yesterday 18:37

ClarkeandNewman · Yesterday 18:32

To what ends?

Because people are concerned about the high levels of mass immigration yet call everyone who speaks up about it ‘racists’. It’s like they are creating a them and “us” scenario.
The government seem to want to control everyone by whatever means possible. Pushing digital ID while claiming they have a “mandate”. Nobody gave them a mandate for that. I’ve never known the country in such a state that it’s in now. Everyone is divided. Wasn’t like this 30/40 years ago. The country is divided under this government. Never known anything like it.

Why are you talking like I’m a massive fan of the tories?? I’m not! Do you not think I disagree with what they did either. But as I’ve pointed out earlier. It took them 14 years to lose popularity. It’s taken Starmer less than a year. I think a lot of people wanted him out after his first 12 months and that’s a record. Liz Truss was not elected by the public. Starmer was.

I'm pretty sure the only people who get called racist are the many obvious racists.

Oh like the poster very early this morning who made a racist comment on this thread about white male leaders! But nobody has mentioned that except me. Now if they’d have said brown male leaders everyone would have been quick to jump on the racist bandwagon! Okay!

Locutus2000 · Yesterday 18:44

Flyingintotheunknown · Yesterday 17:50

Nope! Don’t give me that shit! Apparently according to the left racism means anyone who speaks out against mass uncontrolled illegal migration is a “racist”. You however, chose to target a specific skin colour - white men! Can’t be racism when it suits now can it!

Some people would label you a racist though if you voice concern about immigration levels. It’s a way to shut down debate.
