Austerity was a policy of retrenchment and fiscal consolidation. No, COVID wasn't part of that, it was an unexpected event. But the government was still making policy according to austerity rhetoric - cutting and freezing public sector pay, cutting public services, increased social security conditionality and so forth. Basically a welfare state is an integral part of a capitalist economy but that economy has moved on from the early days of the welfare state so the state has to adapt to its changing needs. Austerity was more about doing that and smashing the vestiges of the post war settlement.

Because the rest are worse.

The government seem to want to control everyone by whatever means possible. Pushing digital ID while claiming they have a “mandate”. Nobody gave them a mandate for that. I’ve never known the country in such a state that it’s in now. Everyone is divided. Wasn’t like this 30/40 years ago. The country is divided under this government. Never known anything like it.
