FOOTBALL!!!!

Why does bloody football need to be on every channel. Why can’t they have a dedicated channel for it instead of messing around with the tv schedules for weeks on end!

Contrary to what the BBC etc would like you to believe, we don’t all love the ‘beautiful’ game, or even like it!

Grown men getting paid millions of pounds to run around after a little ball for 90 minutes and fans (agreed not all) that get all emotional/het up/drunk/aggressive and aren’t happy unless they’ve had a fight over it.

It’s pathetic!! AIBU

I know it’s not on every channel, it’s just everywhere - every morning news show, local radio, social media feed from people/groups I don’t even follow,, even the fecking gym music this week - and I’m sick of hearing about it. No other sport gets as much air time and most other sportspeople are paid a hell of a lot less then footballers and deserve the same amount of recognition.

They don't make the money out of thin air. They get it because it is popular so generates money.

What a strange life, to be proud of being so ignorant over something that means so much to people. I don't like love island but I don't kid myself that it is a virtue

WtF has love island got to do with it?? I’m not proud of being ignorant about anything, I’m just sick of hearing about it (and it really is relentless in Scotland at the moment, England are more used to such events)

Why do people who don't like football complain about how much the players get paid? They're entertainers who bring in millions for their clubs through advertising, sponsorship, tv deals etc. Why shouldn't the players make the money.

Do you also complain about film stars, other sportspeople etc

Because they are parroting stuff they've heard without giving it a moment of thought

There's about another 100 odd tv channels to choose from - even if you have fairly basic Freeview.
Just change the channel.

While that's true about 100-odd channels, most of them are full of shite and repeats!

I find myself listening to Radio 4 a lot.

Badbadbunny · 20/06/2026 19:35

Not half as annoying as when it's Wimbledon or the Olympics which takes over far more of the TV channels for a lot longer. At least footie matches are only a couple of hours - with Wimbledon and Olympics it's all day every day.

But line dancing and karaoke don't have the same problems with racism, sexism, hooliganism, violence and domestic abuse as far as I am aware?

I agree, people like all sorts of things, and it wouldn't do if we all liked the same things. Indeed I prefer my interests to be less popular so they aren't as crowded. But we can still find it hard to relate to sometimes. Especially when so many people support a sport with such a toxic culture associated with it

Do you genuinely think it is something inherent in football rhat makes people violent...or is it perhaps the fact that it is the most popular thing and it just follows on from that.

Or to put it another way if football disappears do you really think all these problems will be solved. I think it is more likely that there would be articles about the rise in violence after line dancing competitions.....

It’s true, though! That’s why you hear it said a lot.

Nope it isn't. They are paid exactly the amount that they generate. Or do you think if they weren't paid that much the clubs would give TV money to hospitals?

Very upset that WDYTYA was cancelled for it

Put the football on BBC 3 or someting, or 4 or 2, and let the normal programmes continue.

Why is every other programme sacrificed for football?

Because more people watch it than most of the normal programs?

Because thats a thing people love but I hate but I don't resent that being part of the cultural conversation the way you do about something so much more popular.

I just think it is a weird way to live life.

It’s the World Cup, OP. A few weeks every four years when millions of sports fans can actually watch top-class live football without a subscription. I’m loving every minute.

Don’t worry, prime-time TV will be back to the usual diet of banal generic mindless crap soon enough. Until then, suck it up.

Edited

But it's not just the world cup - football is on week in, week out throughout the year with the various competitions, etc. not to mention women's football which seems to be on all the time too. Regular programmes are nearly always cancelled or moved to another time. There really should be a football channel - it would suit a huge percentage of people.

PistachioTiramisu · 21/06/2026 08:30

Wimbledon, Royal Ascot, Olympics, Athletics to name a few.

Not on terrestrial telly.

And the soaps and inane quizzes are on at prime time week in week out. There really should be a soap channel. It would suit a lot of us that don’t watch them.

hobbydrama · 21/06/2026 08:57

Oh come on! It’s the World Cup ⚽️

If we ever needed some excitement and camaraderie in England then arguably it’s now! These ‘million pound earning men’ can be fantastic role models for our young people too. If you can watch and listen to the crowd after the England v Croatia match singing Hey Jude to Bellingham and not feel even mildly emotional and proud then you’ve got a heart of stone. Let’s enjoy these great moments!

Oh and like PPs have said, you can find lots of other things to watch!

BauhausOfEliott · 21/06/2026 09:54

Has it occurred to you that not everything has to be specially tailored to your personal likes and dislikes all the time?

You don’t like football. Fine. I don’t like about 90% of the shows that are typically on ITV and BBC1, but I don’t come on Mumsnet bleating about it because I appreciate that television is about more people than me.

Also, the World Cup is only once every four years. Your stuff is on year in, year out.

A football channel that would end up charging people. The licence fee and sponsors on ITV are akready paid for by the majority. The spread of football coverage reflects that.
