FOOTBALL!!!!

twiddlingthumbs69 · 18/06/2026 16:30

Why does bloody football need to be on every channel. Why can’t they have a dedicated channel for it instead of messing around with the tv schedules for weeks on end!

Contrary to what the BBC etc would like you to believe, we don’t all love the ‘beautiful’ game, or even like it!

Grown men getting paid millions of pounds to run around after a little ball for 90 minutes and fans (agreed not all) that get all emotional/het up/drunk/aggressive and aren’t happy unless they’ve had a fight over it.

It’s pathetic!! AIBU

I HATE football. It's an awful corrupt sport, that is full of violence, alcohol abuse, associated with an increase in domestic abuse, racism, sexism, homophobia, it's just so horrible and nasty I am astonished so many people think it's ok to support something that perpetuates such a toxic culture.

But I didn't even realise it was the world cup until about 2 days ago when I saw the news about the Scots in Boston (which I think is absolutely wonderful!). I think this demonstrates it's very easy to avoid all things football related and not be affected by the World Cup being on.

The weather is too nice to be stuck inside watching TV. I am far happier sitting in my garden, going for a walk, or swimming in the outdoor pool at the gym.

I don't actually mind it when it's the world cup. The matches are on quite late so it's not ever so helpful, but when England are playing matches earlier in the day, it's the perfect time to go to the outdoor pool, or IKEA, or other places you might prefer to have mostly to yourself, as everyone else is sitting inside staring at their TV screen.

I had to laugh a couple of years ago. It was some sort of international football thing and England had progressed reasonably far and I was on a campsite. It was gorgeous sunshine, with fantastic views of the Malvern Hills and everyone was sitting inside their motorhome/caravan staring at a TV screen. I just find it barmy people would sooner watch TV than enjoy the glorious weather and being in nature.

Each to their own though.

I love the football. Have grown up with it and we are a football loving family.

I find it barmy that people love line dancing or karaoke but I don't judge those that do. The world would be a boring place if we all loved the same things.

At the end of the day the average game of footy is 90 minutes plus added extra time so hardly like you are spending the whole day indoors glued to the TV anyway. Just the duration of the game itself. Plenty of time to go for a walk, enjoy the weather and admire the views.

AlbertaGeorgia · 19/06/2026 16:32

I don’t like tennis. I’ve no interest in it. So I don’t comment on it. I’ve no opinion on the players, the fans, how much they all get paid.

”associated with domestic violence”

Of course, I’m sure those guys would be model husbands if it wasn’t for the air-bag kickers.

But line dancing and karaoke don't have the same problems with racism, sexism, hooliganism, violence and domestic abuse as far as I am aware?

I agree, people like all sorts of things, and it wouldn't do if we all liked the same things. Indeed I prefer my interests to be less popular so they aren't as crowded. But we can still find it hard to relate to sometimes. Especially when so many people support a sport with such a toxic culture associated with it

YANBU.

I'm so glad my DH feels the same way. I would have no respect for him, otherwise.

Get a grip

“It’s just a load of overpaid men kicking a bag of air about blah de blah de blah”

Change the bloody record.

It’s true, though! That’s why you hear it said a lot.

They bring in millions to the companies that employ them. Don't they deserve to be paid well for doing that?

likelysuspect · 19/06/2026 20:04

Very upset that WDYTYA was cancelled for it

Put the football on BBC 3 or someting, or 4 or 2, and let the normal programmes continue.

Why is every other programme sacrificed for football?

BitOutOfPractice · 19/06/2026 20:08

Because more people love World Cup football than Eastenders or Love Island. We have to put up with that shit 52 weeks a year most years. Yet dare to put something else on and the Chase and Emerdale fans are up in arms. Go out and do something else

WDYTYA is on iPlayer. Watch it there. Or on BBC3 or something and let the main channel be for a special, live, one off.

Not this weeks.

tinyspiny · 18/06/2026 16:34

It’s not on every channel , they are showing different matches at different times and there are plenty of other channels to watch . I don’t watch Soaps but I don’t moan about them being on both of the main channels several nights a week .

This^
can we have a thread with moaning about Soaps please 🙏

BitOutOfPractice · 19/06/2026 20:15

likelysuspect · 19/06/2026 20:13

Not this weeks.

You might have ro wait a few days. Or watch a past episode. If you’re not too “really upset” that is. 🙄

SpottyAlpaca · 19/06/2026 20:21

It’s the World Cup, OP. A few weeks every four years when millions of sports fans can actually watch top-class live football without a subscription. I’m loving every minute.

Don’t worry, prime-time TV will be back to the usual diet of banal generic mindless crap soon enough. Until then, suck it up.

Yes bringing in multi millions to multi million clubs.

But being paid 1000s of times over the average wage doesn’t seem right to me.

But they are bringing in that income to the club. It's a highly skilled and competitive job.

Is it that they are just footballers to you? Not worthy of earning millions?

Not just footballers.Compared with some other jobs, I don’t think quite a few others are worthy of earning millions, footballer, tv celebrities, film stars, singers, influencers to name a few.

Onefairfish · 19/06/2026 22:01

I hate football and everything about it, so I just don’t watch it and choose another channel if I want to watch TV. I remember a time before the choice we have today of terrestrial and streaming channels; you would have had a point then, but not so much now.

Allseeingallknowing · 19/06/2026 19:10

It's said a lot because people who don't like football often know very little about it and they wear it like a badge of pride. There's a lot of snobbery and condescension going on too.

BlondeFool · 20/06/2026 18:16

It’s not. Plus you can stream in 2026 😂😂😂😂😂

VividPinkTraybake · 20/06/2026 19:18

PistachioTiramisu · 18/06/2026 18:12

I agree with you OP, but were are not in the majority! I hate football so much - ridiculously overpaid men kicking a ball around for 90 minutes does nothing for me and no I don't care whether England win or lose.

Do you people get a memo? Because it's always the same clichés that people are supposed to find biting but are actually just pathetic. What do you find interesting then?
