FOOTBALL!!!!

Why does bloody football need to be on every channel. Why can’t they have a dedicated channel for it instead of messing around with the tv schedules for weeks on end!

Contrary to what the BBC etc would like you to believe, we don’t all love the ‘beautiful’ game, or even like it!

Grown men getting paid millions of pounds to run around after a little ball for 90 minutes and fans (agreed not all) that get all emotional/het up/drunk/aggressive and aren’t happy unless they’ve had a fight over it.

It’s pathetic!! AIBU

I agree with you OP, but were are not in the majority! I hate football so much - ridiculously overpaid men kicking a ball around for 90 minutes does nothing for me and no I don't care whether England win or lose.

That old dismissive cliché again.

PetulaGordeno · 18/06/2026 19:52

I’m not watching all of it because who has the time or wants to stay up all night?
However, lots of football fans are locked out of so much now because it runs across Sky, Amazon, TNT the costs are just ridiculous.
So here they get to watch it on BBC and ITV and it is only once every 4 years.
It is also on at a time when they start showing lots of repeats anyway as it’s summer.
There are so many other things to watch even if you don’t have lots of streaming services, find yourself some good box sets even within the main 5 channels there are loads to choose from.
I got NOW TV on a deal recently and I’ve found loads of great stuff on there.
And as for football I’ve really loved watching Scotland and some of the African nations because of the absolute joy they bring on and off the pitch.
Yes there are some wealthy players but this week it’s been all about the Ivory Coast, who couldn’t afford to bring their own families over, got a draw against Spain and have become overnight superstars. It’s lovely to see.
Anyway, that’s my take. I understand it’s probably frustrating and God knows how the BBC will manage when Wimbledon is on as that’s my favourite and it usually dominates as well.

youalright · 18/06/2026 19:54

Get yourself a dodgy stick like everyone else and you will never have to watch football again

Jamesblonde2 · 18/06/2026 19:56

There are tens upon tens of Freeview channels, as well as possible Netflix etc if you pay for it. Surely there’s something else you can watch?!

I love a celebration and the World Cup ticks that box for me. Nice lead up to the summer holidays.

It was all going so well until you got Ivory Coast and Cape Verde mixed up. Maybe a few more hours of football will help out. There's Mexico v South Korea at 2am on Friday morning to start with😁

“It’s just a load of overpaid men kicking a bag of air about blah de blah de blah”

Change the bloody record.

Haha! I always love this wank argument! As though these women would be calling them ‘overpaid men kicking a bag of air about’ if their husbands were the ones doing the kicking and bringing home hundreds of thousands of pounds a week! They’d be ‘wagging’ it up with the rest of us within seconds!

MrCollinsandhisboiledpotatoes · 18/06/2026 21:33

"Every channel" 🤣

Have I slipped back to 1992?

Attictroll · 18/06/2026 21:36

It’s so fxxxing boring. It can be ignored on the tv but I need a would you like to opt out of football option like when they do it for Mother’s Day to stop all the stupid email and Google doodle style images.

@twiddlingthumbs69 channel 52 on Freeview is showing Hallmark Christmas Movies......🎄

My DW loves that channel
I walk past the TV and noticed the same actors are in a lot of them.

I'm so glad my DH feels the same way. I would have no respect for him, otherwise.

🙄

Why do people who don't like football complain about how much the players get paid? They're entertainers who bring in millions for their clubs through advertising, sponsorship, tv deals etc. Why shouldn't the players make the money.

Do you also complain about film stars, other sportspeople etc

Viennoiseries · 18/06/2026 23:22

The World Cup is once every 4 years and is the most watched tournament in the world on TV.

Meanwhile we have to put up with the endless drivel of soaps on a daily basis.

It's a MN thing, there's a weird snobbery about football on here.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 18/06/2026 23:24

It's when the snooker messes up the TV schedules, that I get upset, that's not even a sport.

Aren't they?

Someone moves back to their home town to save a failing business (bakery/shop etc) or reconnect with their first love in some way.

Or someone grumpy rediscovers the joy of Christmas and the importance of family. 😂Gotta love them.

I LOVE the Football ⚽
Come on England 😁

I’m with you 😀

PurpleCoo · 19/06/2026 14:57

I HATE football. It's an awful corrupt sport, that is full of violence, alcohol abuse, associated with an increase in domestic abuse, racism, sexism, homophobia, it's just so horrible and nasty I am astonished so many people think it's ok to support something that perpetuates such a toxic culture.

But I didn't even realise it was the world cup until about 2 days ago when I saw the news about the Scots in Boston (which I think is absolutely wonderful!). I think this demonstrates it's very easy to avoid all things football related and not be affected by the World Cup being on.

The weather is too nice to be stuck inside watching TV. I am far happier sitting in my garden, going for a walk, or swimming in the outdoor pool at the gym.

I don't actually mind it when it's the world cup. The matches are on quite late so it's not ever so helpful, but when England are playing matches earlier in the day, it's the perfect time to go to the outdoor pool, or IKEA, or other places you might prefer to have mostly to yourself, as everyone else is sitting inside staring at their TV screen.

I had to laugh a couple of years ago. It was some sort of international football thing and England had progressed reasonably far and I was on a campsite. It was gorgeous sunshine, with fantastic views of the Malvern Hills and everyone was sitting inside their motorhome/caravan staring at a TV screen. I just find it barmy people would sooner watch TV than enjoy the glorious weather and being in nature.

My late mother hated it too, indeed only would ever speak about it to ask about two former members of her church congregation.

Not long before her death she told me that on the day of the 1966 World Cup final the family went on a river trip.

I wouldn't respect my husband if he wore another man's name on his back, screamed at the TV in happiness or rage, looked up to men running across a pitch and kicking a ball as if they are actually accomplishing anything worthwhile, spending money on it or using it as an excuse to get pissed.

I probably view things like this because he always has and it just makes sense for us.

Everyone else can do as they please.
