Greenery on things where it doesnt belong

Ordered baked beans on toast (we'll come back to that) today.

Came with a clump of greenery on top. Salad garni.

What person in their right mind does this?

And OF COURSE it was bloody sourdough. Because NO other bread exists these days. And it was not toasted. It was barely within sight of the toaster I reckon

So it turns up with its green clump and then, to make matters much worse, it came with some butter pats but THE BEANS WERE ALREADY ON THE UNTOASTED TOAST.

So I scraped off my beans to try to spread the butter but of course this was a wasted effort because the butter wouldnt adhere to the untoasted toast due to the bean juice so I ended up just smearing it around while it stuck to my knife.

Anyway back to the greenery. I cant tell you how many bits of rocket have gone flying down the road before when served atop something, because of course a bit of wind will pick up salad and send it flying into the face of an unsuspecting pedestrian.

And dont get me started on bloody pea shoots.

YANBU - Garnishing perfectly adequate meals with frilly extras is a performative nonsense to make something out of nothing

YABU - I really like bits of salad on top of a full English and you're only posting this because your OH has the football on anyway and you're bored.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 18/06/2026 06:32

I would more incensed about the butter /soggy toast situation (Always butter on the toast BEFORE the beans) than the greenery, but honestly if it was coriander that would have finished me off.

And warm bread is not toast.

I wouldn't be going back!

And Another Thing!
If you order something that requires butter, eg toast, toasted teacake, or a cheese scone, they never give you enough and it’s always cold and won’t spread. Usually two teeny pats. I always have to ask for more and they look at me as if I’m a right lardy.

Doesn't the butter start to melt momentarily when you leave the little pat on the warm item?

What's the other 10%?
I tried carnivore once for a month absolutely loved how it made me feel but I just got bored.
But now my diet has gone so bad, I'd like to give it another go

I tend to have things like olives, avocado and a little other fruit. But I avoid grains like the plague.

I don’t buy that they’re healthy and actually think they’re absolutely terrible for human health.

I’ve been doing this now for 1.5 years and I never get bored of juicy steaks, fatty pork, lamb, bacon, eggs, sausages, cheese & seafood.

I literally can’t put weight on eating like this and it’s so easy to stay satiated.

Maybe you’ll give it another try but go slow and it’s fine not to be 100% strict.

Could not agree more about coriander. Nasty soapy stuff.

Coriander is strange that it tastes soapy to some people The rest of us it doesn't taste like that

Nor when it's rick solid in the first place

By which time the toast is getting cold

MrsClatterbuck · 18/06/2026 08:06

I'm with you. I have even got this greenery on my
Fry where it most definitely doesn't belong. Also the other day out for lunch I got the liver bacon and onion gravy meal. Greenery again why.
Please just stop this stupid practice.
Also I always have to ask for extra butter for my scone. I like my butter. If hard I usually put it under my tea or coffee cup to soften it or the tea pot.

I love baked beans and I love beans on toast.

I love sourdough.

Beans on toast does not require butter.

Pea shoots are glorious.

There - I said what I said 🙈

Surely this entire post is a banning offence?

CaesarAugusta · 18/06/2026 08:24

When I'm dictator I'll make cafes and restaurants that serve greenery with breakfasts conduct a survey where for, say, a month, they offer the choice of one meal with salad and the same meal with something else, e.g. an extra portion of toast. Then they would have to report back honestly on how that want. I'm prepared to bet that the vote would go almost exclusively in favour of no greenery.

Let's settle on the stocks. We could throw all the unwanted greenery and edible flowers at you.

Oh me too Im always asking for more butter, and if its a scone, more cream.

Send all the pea shoots and coriander my way.
I love an edible flower as well!

SomeOtherUser · 18/06/2026 09:24

I think if you order beans on toast, the beans will always be on the bread, so this doesn't surprise me. Personally I wouldn't order this as the bread turns to slime.

You have however hit upon two of my pet peeves: sourdough bread as breakfast toast (no!) and pre-buttered toast (nooooo!).

likelysuspect · 18/06/2026 09:28

Well Im nothing if not a glutton for punishment and will order beans on toast again today, I see a little cafe where we are going later which has it.

I will report back

Unless,,,, my other bug bear applies, which is that beans on toast is considered a 'breakfast item' which means it wont be served throughout the day.

You people are crazy! (Except for @Malasana )

Sourdough toast is perfect for beans because the rich sauce can soak in without making the bread all mushy and floppy.

If the sauce is good, you don't need butter. (Bold Beans make the best baked beans; the sauce is delicious)

I don't care either way about garnish, but I would like a grating of cheese and some hot sauce.

likelysuspect · 17/06/2026 23:40

Yes I mean there was a thread about this recently and it established that there are people in the world, PP is probably one of them, that literally didnt know that there are all sorts of fresh baked bread that ISNT sourdough with its horrible sour flavour.

They dont know this!

They've never heard of a split tin, bloomer, cottage loaf, morning roll, soda bread, milk roll (which is a loaf, easy mistake to make for those who dont know the world of bread), plenty of others

Poor old PP.

Of course people know those other breads exist. I happily eat them too but most people know that most commercially processed breads are not good for you, so the pp has a point, sourdough bread is healthier.

You seem to have gone from light hearted to militant on this thread.

HiCandles · 17/06/2026 22:37

Didn't see the thread but I totally agree. I hate chilli/spice and tikka masala is my limit. So common nowadays for unmentioned chilli to be either in a dish or garnishing it. Personally I think it's lazy cooking, ah can't be bothered to make something tasty, just lob a bit of salt and chilli in and charge customers a fortune.

I agree. The slightest bit of chilli gives my son a ‘stomach’ upset for days. So accordingly he is careful when eating out but sometimes he just doesn’t know

Oooh yes - cheese and some Tabasco. Perfection.

Monty36 · 18/06/2026 09:58

You always need butter on a jacket potato. On mash as well as in it. On toast. On baked beans on toast.
Sourdough is fine providing it is toasted enough when used for toast.
White plastic bread can lack the substance for beans on toast
I would not put greenery on beans on toast. It doesn’t go.
I want a bacon sandwich now. In crusty white unsliced bread. With butter !

Blame Jamie Oliver for that. He chops up a red chilli on pretty much everything.
